Envy, according to Oxford dictionary; is a desire to have a quality, possession, or other desirable thing belonging to someone else.

We as humans often develop this feeling in us even if it is only for a short moment. It is important that we learn how to handle this feeling so that it doesn't develop into sin.

Envy can occur in various ways and even in relationship between siblings, lovers, friends, neighbours and so on. It is a good thing to always knock off this feeling whenever it arises so as to help us feel better and hope in God for our blessings and favours.

This is one portion of the bible that really helped me and made me know how to deal with envy.

Covetousness is Stealing and Stealing is an Act or Action.

Which means Covetousness is An Act, which is Practically and Realistically Done!

Doesn't god describe himself as a "jealous god"? (Exodus 34:14 before you people start your own)
His own is even worse self, he's jealous over insignificant gods that are supposed to be like ants when compared to him.

So god is allowed to be jealous but we are not?
abeg stop this tomfoolery grin grin grin

We are made in the image and likeness of God. That is why we also feel jealous. But we must try to curtail it so that it doesn't lead us into sin. Being jealous is not a sin but when we allow it to linger and then add action into it, then it can lead us to sin.

That seems reasonable enough
Though, seeing as I was talking about god being jealous of other gods, I would like to add that god does advocate the total eradication of those who worship other gods except for him.
Just read the entirety of Deuteronomy 13 to see what I mean.

Yes, I am aware that after the resurrection of Christ most things in the old testament have been wiped away, and that now god is accepting of all.

To that, however, I would like to point out that God has stated multiple times that he is incapable or unwilling to change his mind (see Numbers 23:19, 2 Timothy 2:13, Hebrews 6:17-18) for any reason whatsoever, although the story of Hezekiah contradicts this massively (2 Kings 20:1-11)

It is also a common Christian claim that God is omniscient, meaning that he knows absolutely everything; of that that was, that is, and that is to come.

If this was the case, however, then God, having been aware of the fact that Jesus would die for our sins on the cross, would not have said the things which he did in the Old Testament, because those would count as him lying. And he's not supposed to be able to do that, right?

Therefore, I will not consider the claim about the death and resurrection of Christ's effects on the scripture valid.

That brings me back to my original point. God has "lingered and added action" to his jealousy countless times in the Bible (If you want examples of this in the bible you can ask me but they aren't hard to find). God, the almighty and all powerful apparently has so fragile an ego that he cannot stand the existence of other modes of worship that do not reference him in any way, even though human beings worshipping idols does not affect him at all. One would think that a truly righteous god would be happy with whatever you practice so long as you are a righteous and decent person while doing so. Apparently not.

On to the point, though. You said that being jealous is not a sin, and I agree with you, but what is the logic behind jealousy not being a sin and:

1. covetousness (Exodus 20:17), and
2. sexual thoughts (Matthew 5:27-28)

being sins? The three are similar in that they do not necessary entail the person having committed an actual offense towards another person. Being jealous of someone doesn't hurt them, and neither does covetousness nor sexual thoughts. Yet those two are sins? If you wanted your belief to be structurally sound, then you'd either have to believe that all three are sins or that none are, since it would make no sense otherwise.

Please don't confuse me undecided

No, I am not trying to confuse you. God is God and He does whatever He wills.
I use matt 20 vs 15 to console myself and get out of envy. It works for me

If God insists on being a tyrant by "doing whatever he wills" then he should probably stop masquerading himself as a loving God, since that is not something a loving God would do.

I do agree with straying away from negative emotions such as envy, though I do not believe it is a sin.

Since God can not hold himself by his own standards, I don't see why I should be expected to take anything he says seriously. I am perfectly fine with others practicing Christianity (although it does irritate me seeing my fellow Africans fervently serving the God that the white man was serving as he was enslaving and subjugating us), but I don't think I can deal with it.

If hell happens to exist, then I am content. I would rather stay there than serve an unruly god. Besides, hell's existence basically means that I go somewhere when I die. I think burning in hell, when compared to the alternative scenario of simply ceasing to exist, is a favorable option. Besides, statistically speaking, I'll probably know a lot more people in hell than in heaven. I doubt hell exists, though.

Serving God has to do with our conscience and conviction. I believe in His existence.

Jesus once told Thomas, "blessed are those who believe without seeing"
No human can unravel the mystery behind God.
We experience Him in different ways.

I respect your believe and decision. We all have our freedom of worship.

Our service to God is not one that harms or hurt others. It supports morality and everything good.
God is just and merciful.

Yes you're right from the Human angle. From the Spirit and Heaven's angle, the reverse is the case.

Like God, every one If His creation experiences the emotion called jealousy and righty so. Any human who claims to never experience jealousy from time to time is either defective (broken) or mentally challenged or a liar.
