Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has condemned the destructions that followed the peaceful End SARS protest in October.

The official said the perpetrators must face the law.

“If we don’t punish those who caused these damages, others may do it again,” he said on Sunday.

Amaechi spoke during an assessment of the damages at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) headquarters in Lagos, NAN reports.

The former Rivers State Governor said it was legitimate to protest but illegal to destroy private and government properties.

“This is completely disastrous. It is not enough to vent your anger about police brutality in this manner. How does damaging government property concern the police? Whether you like it or not, this will be refurbished or rebuilt with government funds.

”That means the funds also belong to those who have set this place ablaze. Those who commit crime should be held liable and appropriate punishment meted out on them. I was a student from 1983 to 1987, that was a period when the Nigerian students were always out on the streets, we never burnt down anything.

"The rights to protest is defined in the laws of Nigeria, it doesn’t include burning peoples houses or places, it doesn’t include blocking major highways or minor roads. The law said you should protest by the side of the road, it didn’t say you should protest and block the roads because there are other road users.

“I may not like police brutality and I didn’t protest. It is legitimate to protest but it is illegitimate to take other people’s rights. The rights to protest is defined in the constitution but it does not include burning people’s houses and government properties”, Amaechi stressed.

I don't want to sound like a Buharist but it was very bad for youths to destroy public properties.

I supported them once but I've now realized the error of My ways.

God bless Nigeria.

The morning after the Lekki shootings, it was reported by some Media outfit that the peaceful protesters set fire to the Lekki toll gate and that they burnt the banks around the area...

with the new revelations based on the footage from the panel, it shows the soldiers set fire/ started the fire at the toll gate

Amechi know the people with whom to start your punishment

Ameachi should go and sit down...

Who will punish the negligence of government and its agents

Everything was peaceful and going smoothly till this wicked government came up with that evil plan of sponsoring thugs to disrupt the protest.

As far as I'm concern it is the actions and inactions of the government, its agents and sympathizers that caused the lost of life's and properties during and after the protest.

Who will punish the government for failure to protect the lives of Nigerianshuh

undecided undecided that's a big lie. Nigeria is bigger than Lagos, Abuja and Twitter. The so called peaceful protesters have been attacking some police officers and police stations since day 1, but the media won't focus on that because it doesn't suit their narrative.

You are arguably right but however what then happens to those nigerians that have not only destroyed multiple properties but have also killed over 50, 000 nigerians in a decade whilst displacing over a million nigerians from their homeland, who are now living in IDP camps.................in their own ph.oc.ki.ng country?

Oh well, we know.............you rehabilitate them back into the society including our security outfits and given #150,000 whilst some were reportedly sent abroad for studies. Where? we were not told but i won't be surprised if they were sent to places like sudan, somalia etc

To me, the MPA building fire seem like an internal sabotage/arson. Why would the so called hoodlum target the MPA building in mariner far away from Lekki where the alledged distructions largely took place? Also, there are other government structure as well in mariner which were not torched, why just MPA, it doesn't make sense....

“Why do we grieve failures longer than we celebrate wins?
Failure isn’t the end of the road. It’s a big red flag saying to you ‘Wrong way. Turn around.’
Whenever you feel like a failure, just remember that even Coca Cola only sold 25 bottles their first year
