Well it was a peaceful protest before Assad started killing them which led to a civil war.

In every civil war, world powers take sides.

Russia supported Assad because he guaranteed them unlimited access to the black sea for their naval operation. American decided to support opposition because they don't want Russia influence to grow in the middle east.

Assad ethnic group is a minority in Syria, hence your ipob analogy can't work in Syria.
