There is a big fraud scheme going on the third Mainland bridge in Lagos because of the ongoing construction work there. My father-in-law fell victim last week and this is the simple story. Drivers plying that route, please beware!!!

Construction on the second side of the bridge started about last week, which meant that you couldn't drive straight to Obalende/Victoria Island from Adekunle bus-stop. However if you found yourself there (Adekunle), a diversion was created on the Oworo side where you could make a u-turn under the bridge and turn to the other side thereby joining the bridge to Obalende/Victoria Island. Since the construction started generally, people have had to endure manic traffic daily arising not just from the closure of the bridge itself, but other adjoining roads without any warning about the closure of those roads (you'll just wake up to realize your street has been cordoned off), nor the provision of alternative routes. As it is in their nature, the government has just left people to sort out themselves and find their way anyhow.

Back to the story, the diversion under the bridge (a small gate leading to the other side) was opened since Monday and you needed to see the mad traffic, but people still endured. This particular road had been in the news before now for many wrong reasons; from being a hideout for hoodlums and traffic robbers to once being rumoured as a route for ritualists. So from Monday to Wednesday lastweek, thousands of cars took that route to cross to the other side and there were always these rough-looking boys around, either helping to push broken down cars or just doing outright begging. Whichever way, it was the route ALL vehicles followed from Adekunle to turn to the Obalende/Victoria Island side.

Anyways, fast-forward to Thursday, some men (claiming to be men from the local government) stormed the place in the morning and started arresting cars on that route and saying the Lagos government had given the order to impound vehicles found on one-way routes. Note, this road is a small gate under the bridge (has no vehicular movement from the other side whatsoever) and had never been opened to cars before (so it's not designated officially as one-way or two-way); and so it seemed appropriate at this time as we have had such ad hoc routes opened in several places from time to time since the construction started - people who use the bridge daily can attest to these ad hoc openings daily. My father-in-law (over 60 years old) was driving by himself to his office on this route when he was stopped by these guys (note that there were several other vehicles on the path but they probably targeted those they saw as vulnerable). Out of courtesy, he wound down the side glass to ask what was going on, but to his surprise was forcefully wrestled off the steering. He was left in a state of shock as the boys were fierce. When one of them eventually got into the vehicle, they threatened him about his car being impounded by them and later auctioned because that road was a one-way route (one that doesn't even exist as an official road on the map; no road signs, just sand and dirt) and then gave him an option to pay a token to them if he didn't want to lose his vehicle. According to them, they were doing him a favour!! After begging for several minutes and being harassed, he was asked to park his car and was taken on foot to another one of them who had a POS machine on him. My father-in-law paid N62,500 to them (receipt attached) before he was let go. He was really shaken. Obviously, the road is now a trap to lure unsuspecting drivers and rip them off. Drivers on this route, please beware! These boys are there now everyday. Anyone else experienced this??

Mods, please help push this to the front page to alert unsuspecting Drivers!!

Yesternight I was coming back from the airport and impassed that route, though it was around 12 midnight and the road was free.

But I saw those miscreants there waiting for unspsecting innocent people to devour.

I was wondering why there is no clear road sign from the government since they have blocked the third mainland bridge.
The miscreants also wanted to rob me but I never brought down my glasses
They only removed one of the fancy coverings on my car door.

Lagos State government should do something about this.

If we can unite on #endsars, can we unite on these uneducated bastards trying to make a living by harassing others. The old man messed up. If they are going to arrest me, they have to arrest everyone plying that road.

My grouse is with the Lagos State Government hiring touts, miscreants and thugs as Local Government Officials. And they will keep deceiving the people themselves by saying Lagos is a mega city! These people are hoodlums who will fight dirty for their own pockets, and cannot even understand what "service" to the people means.

How will you close roads (in the name of construction) and make life a living hell for the people?? Who are you constructing the road for? Mind you @Mr. Sanwo-Olu, you are not doing us a favour by ordering repair works, because you people will soon throw party and publish in the papers roads that you've constructed - ordinarily, what should have been your direct obligations to the people! When you kill the people with stress before you finish constructing these roads, who will ply them? No iota of care whatsoever about what the people are going through. Not even a monthly or quarterly speech from the Governor on the 3rd Mainland bridge works to even show that he's concerned.

Did anyone see the traffic at Ojota last Saturday? It was hellish!! No notice whatsoever; the stretch of works was over 3 to 4km. I was in the traffic for over 2 hours and kept wondering why they couldn't limit works to just late nights; why they didn't even communicate it for people to find alternative routes. Funny enough, Google Maps are sometimes not up to date on those construction works. It's when you get there physically that you will what exactly is going on, at times, too late to turn!

Governor Pontius Pilate, control your boys thugs who act as Local Government officials on 3rd Mainland bridge to stop exploiting the people unjustly, adding salt to injury!!
