The Igbos are on record to have organized the fiercest resistance to the might of the British in the history of colonialism, no tribe in Nigeria even comes close to the Ekumeku resistance that lasted from (1883-1913), yet Igbos "savages" didn't need some useless empire to achieve such feat. Meanwhile the ones with empires either had their king exiled and their bronzes and other prized historic items looted by the British (like the Benin empire), or simply forced to sign a peace treaty when faced with the barrels of British guns (Oyo empire) with little or no resistance.

Only the Kanuri people along with the Igbos can hold their head high as true warriors who bloodied the colonial war machines in decades of brutal wars before they were defeated.

The british had maxim guns with which they had walked through everybody in the region.
Also the british only managed to capture Benin city, the capital, but some Benin generals continued the guerrilla warfare for a year or so.
The british forces were led by an admiral. It took britain 2 years to prepare for the war.
