Covid-19 changed our world forever in 2020. Now that the vaccine is out and many countries like UK, Russia, China, Japan, etc are already vaccinating their citizens, mostly free of charge, because most western govt had spent billions of dollars covering the cost with their health insurance companies.

Many international airlines are about to roll out policies that prohibits anybody without covid-19 vaccine from flying with their airlines.

Nigerians are well known travellers all over the world, and travelling is now one of our biggest industry.

Many question is, with the huge economical cost to purchase these covid-19 vaccines, what is our govt doing to help vaccinate Nigerians, probably the economical viable Nigerians? Africa is about to be left far behind without a proper plan to procure these vaccines for her citizens.

Lol.... but seriously, I think there is something in us or our environment that imunes us. I think I believe one study that says Vitamin D helps, our sunshine gets an abundance of it.
We had more cases and death during lockdown when people couldn't go out and be exposed to the sun than now when the economy is completely opened.

All the western and CNN prediction that Africa would become the Covid19 head quarter of the world fell to naughts

I understand my Oga. The difference though is that civil servants were entitled to pensions (called defined benefit pension plans) where you get a certain amount of money after working for some years. It was the government’s responsibility to just pay the pensioners from their account. Unfortunately, corrupt people like Maina and his goons chopped the money plus our government is too broke (and corrupt) to even make up. That’s why Babas no dey see pension collect.

But under the new plan (defined contribution), money is taken from salaries and given to investment houses and pension funds chosen by staff. And these pension funds invest the money on our behalf until retirement. Similar to the 401k in Yankee and other plans in developed countries.

It is our responsibility to choose what pension funds we want to invest our money for us so we need to be careful with this choice. I can list a couple that are doing well but I no want anyone to come insult me again so I will pass. Mind you, it is the same guys that handle our mutual funds that handle these investments so they actually know what they are doing.

Trust me sir, this lazy youth generation of workers will not suffer the fate of those old babas wey dey queue and die waiting to collect pension. Especially if they are maxing out on voluntary contributions and also making other retirement investments (buying house, Tbills, bonds and as Oga Emmanuel says holding stocks long term).

Ps: I don’t know if the government workers will still be receiving pensions but i know they are making contributions to the pension funds.

Please name them if you don't mind.

I'm of the opinion that retirement earnings contribution should be scraped, the unabated and rapid decline in the value of the naira does not favor the concept of long term savings......

Why save up money for another human being to use up at current valuation only to return it at some very long time in the future with a lower real purchasing power

The govt already see this as another form of revenue hence their eyes are on it......, free money on the table

It's better I consume all of my current earnings than gather it up for someone else to consume and pay me in a counterfeit coin

#4 million could get u a story building in Lagos @ 1999, today u must have #30million

#4 thousand naira could get u I pass my neighbor gen today u must have #25thousand

Stop pension? So what happens to your elderly in the society when they no longer have the strength to lift their arms.
Have you see how those in the informa sector live in their old age because they do not have a formal form of pension plan other than relying on their children?

If Nigeria had been Germany I would have swallowed this point but me and u know our country wella........all this arguments sounds good on paper but implement in real life becomes difficult

Moreover the kind of pensioners u are describing have poor kyc documentation and I know how they will be treated, many would die trying to collect their pensions

There are people whose only means of livelihood depends on that stipends they get from the present inefficient pension scheme. If we follow this your recommendation so na die be that na.

Sometimes it is better to improve a system than to just scrap it because it is not working.

Using your analogy, its like saying dividends should be scrapped because GTL registrar is not effective

Found the attached on Na.ira me.tric. I think these are mainly Fund II (under age 50) but I am not too sure.

I don’t know much about the NLPC that had 52% returns but they seem to be doing very well. AXA Mansard and Investment One are also very good.

Everyone I know uses Stanbic but I am disappointed in their performance. They have good customer service though.

If that 4 million was invested by a good investment house in 99, it may be worth 30 million today. Who knows? That’s the point of retirement savings. Your contributions (and your employer’s) are invested for you by the pension funds.

The government has no control over the funds. It is all with the chosen pension funds’ custodians.

if majority of the stories coming out of the pension schemes had been sweet, maybe I might have not taken this stance.....

Most people that need this pensions do not get them and when it comes it's never on time.......

May God never allow any of us be among the people that would need the money tied up in a retired savings account for survival and upkeep..

Organized labour has commended the recent measures of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) aimed at shoring up the value of the Naira.

The Naira recently reversed its depreciation trend in the parallel market, recording N20 gain against the United States Dollar closing at N470 per dollar due to what observers attributed to the new rules introduced by the CBN, which allowed beneficiaries of diaspora remittances and foreign exchange transfers into domiciliary account, and collect the proceed in foreign currencies.

Speaking at the one-day interactive session with stakeholders on the five-year policy trust of the apex bank in Kaduna, weekend, Vice President of Industriall Global Union, Comrade Issa Aremu, hailed the CBN’s Monetary Policy Committee ( MPC) for resisting the pressures to benchmark the real value of Naira with what he called “speculative parallel market rates.”

He observed that Naira’s worth was better determined by “market fundamentals” aimed at driving growth and development protecting wage income rather than satisfying “the insatiable urge of currency speculators for unearned profits on the streets.”

He said Nigeria depends on imported inputs for industrial production, adding that “unmanaged exchange rates” and attendant devaluation would further increase the cost of production, depress wages, making the country uncompetitive and economic recovery intractable.

Comrade Aremu decried the rising inflation and price of foodstuff despite the efforts of the CBN to maintain price stability, blaming it on insecurity which he said had undermined agricultural production in the rural areas.

He urged the fiscal authorities in ministries of trade and investment, interior and agriculture to compliment CBN’s measures and stabilise the economy through appropriate industrial, agricultural and security policies that would stimulate and guarantee seamless productivity in the country.

Participants, drawn from affiliate unions of NLC and TUC and informal sector workers in the state, also acknowledged and commended the CBN’s development financing interventions in transportation, agriculture, cotton and textile sub-sectors, oil and gas sector aimed at self-reliance and domestic production.

On security, Aremu called for what he called “bi-partisan statesmanship through cooperation by states and non-state actors to confront banditry and criminal violence”.

“The recent nationwide concerns about growing insecurity are welcome, but Nigeria should not be a debating society but a functioning secured Republic.

“Blame games and calls for resignations of President or Service Chiefs are not helpful. In fact, acrimonies and discordant voices only benefit criminals.

“What is needed is bi-partisan cooperation to confront insecurity and the burden is on President Buhari to rally the nation against growing threats to lives and livelihoods.”

He observed that the lasting solution to “physical insecurity is economic security” which can only come through decent jobs for millions of unemployed youth across the federation.

The average Nigerian does not have savings. The pension fund is their only savings.

If you lose your job, you are entitled to collect 25% of your pension contribution after you can get another job within 3 months

I found out that this fund is the saving grace of 99% of the workers. A church member lost his job, he was able to get just N1 million from his pension fund, he doesn't have any savings whatsoever. When he later got another job after 8 months, he made sure he did Additional Voluntary Contribution because he found out that while he had about N4 million in his pension contribution some of his colleagues who did AVC had about N6 million and they can easily withdraw the Additional Voluntary Contribution when the situation arises.

Correct.

At a conservative return of 10% would have grown to N29.6 million, at 12% would have grown to N43 million in 21 years

Stanbic IBTC is the market leader with about N4 Trillion under management.

A fund manager with N500 billion under management is hungry for achievement unlike a fund manager with N4 Trillion.

A stock market investor with N100 million portfolio will not take the risk an investor with a N1 million portfolio will take

Pension has never helped anybody, it is more like an insurance. Pension should not be your only plan for old age. Your pension should provide just 25% of your expenses or less. Workers should invest in real estates, small businesses, stock market, Eurobonds, Annuities, Partnership and other ventures that can generate passive income eg write a book that will pay you royalties.

Learn Africa a publishing company paid over N200 million as royalties to their authors in 2019, more than 50% of these authors are dead ooo.
