Joshua needs to avoid getting hit and his good to go. Get hit he doesn’t recover well from that unless hes fixed that in his training sessions.

When Kubrat Pulev taunted Wladimir Klitschko and got KOd – Anthony Joshua’s opponent looking for redemption in his second world title shot


Anthony Joshua is back to defend his unified WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight world titles against Kubrat Pulev on Saturday night at Wembley Arena.
AJ must face his IBF mandatory challenger, who has a record of 28-1, including 14 knockouts.


This is the Bulgarian’s only world title fight to date and saw him laid out flat on his back after five rounds.


However, Pulev did emerge from the bout with a fair amount of credit.

Many of Klitschko’s title defences underwhelmed in terms of drama and excitement, whereas Pulev forced a firefight from the opening bell.

The bout began with Pulev on the offensive, which quickly left him open to the champion’s left hook.

Klitschko floored his challenger after just one minute of the first round, but was met with a defiant response.


Pulev rose to his feet on seemingly unsteady legs and then taunted the Ukrainian by standing on one leg and sticking his tongue out at him.

Klitschko replied by knocking him down again straight away – Pulev again made it back to his feet and survived the round.

The second was quieter for both men, but the action exploded once again in the third.

This time it was the right hand from Klitschko that hurt Pulev, followed by a left hook which put him down once more.


The challenger survived round three and even made it through round four, but the writing was clearly on the wall.

In the fifth, Klitschko landed one final crunching left hook which flattened Pulev.

He was unable to beat the count.

Klitschko went on to be dethroned by Tyson Fury a year later before then being knocked out by Anthony Joshua in 2017.

Pulev has since rebuilt with wins over the likes of Dereck Chisora and Hughie Fury, and now gets his opportunity once again.

ANTHONY JOSHUA'S opponent on Saturday is certainly no pushover - his one defeat in 29 fights prove it.

The Bulgarian brute's only loss came against AJ's former opponent Wladimir Klitschko back in 2014.



Klitschko appeared to have spotted his weakness, unleashing a barrage of left hooks that left Pulev floored four times in total.

He seemed defenceless to the punch and it could prove to be the gameplan when Joshua steps back into the ring for the first time in a year.

The British champ has already admitted he has taken advice from Klitschko on how to deal with 39-year-old Pulev.

A win looks set to clear the path to take on nemesis Tyson Fury for the undisputed crown.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Joshua said: “We spoke about the Pulev fight. This was like four weeks ago.

"And I’m probably going to catch up with him again now that you’ve just mentioned it. He has his views."

But he admitted he will take Klitschko's advice with a 'pinch of salt' because every fighter is different.

AJ added: "But every fighter… so Pulev vs Klitschko is different to the Pulev vs Joshua. Pulev vs Klitschko was different to Klitschko vs Joshua. They’re completely different fights.

“I’ve noticed from the analysis that he’s dropped a few guys with the jab. He’s very balanced so if you attack him and you’re not balanced then you can fall into his range. I’ve got to make sure that my attacks are spot on because he’s very good at punching opponents who make mistakes.

“I said ‘don’t make plans so quick for a Fury-Joshua fight because I think Pulev is going to beat Joshua.’

“Let me explain my theory. Joshua got knocked out by Andy Ruiz, who is not a puncher, never been a puncher, and I know that because thirty odd fights that Ruiz had, we promoted.
