Obatobi1:Ok. So, in a well managed greenhouse, one can get up to 8 -10kg with padma or platinum f1 ? |
Re: Bountiful First Harvest In My Tomato Farm by ideepaul: 9:12am On Oct 22, 2020 |
brtrip:Padma and platinum F1 are determinate varieties more suited for open-field cultivation, and hence the lifespan won't let you hit the 10kg mark within less than 2 months of harvest before they give up. If you really want to do greenhouse, then search for indeterminate varieties (just know the seeds are crazily expensive),... but TOMATO greenhouses in the Nigerian context for a beginner? Do you really have the capital and CAPACITY to run a successful greenhouse? Is this the crop that will return the crazy cost of investment on greenhouses? I hope you have conducted the necessary research needed, don't join the bandwagon of failed greenhouse owners all over Nigeria o 1 Like 1 Share |

@oga obatobi1, I did Padma early this year, and faced issues of fruit cracking, how have you surmounted this challenge, and would you use the 30cm spacing without mulching film...nice work you are doing sir, I am also learning greatly from you! |
Re: Bountiful First Harvest In My Tomato Farm by brtrip: 9:36am On Oct 22, 2020 |
ideepaul:Ok thanks for the info. I don't have the capital, just gathering info here and there. |
Re: Bountiful First Harvest In My Tomato Farm by ideepaul: 9:57am On Oct 22, 2020 |
Obatobi1:Padma has a long shelf life, I harvested FULLY ripe Padma, and they stayed for more than a week( just the very few spoilt fruit). You can keep them to ripen better unless you have dealers that demand for this in your area(my own dey complain sey the tomato nor too red finish) |

Obatobi1:What type of fertiliser do you use and how do u apply it ? Is it monthly or weekly ? |
Re: Bountiful First Harvest In My Tomato Farm by Obatobi1(m): 1:39pm On Oct 22, 2020 |
ideepaul: If fruit cracking is the major problem you faced, then I can categorically tell that you did not mulch your field and probably did not irrigate the field. Irregular or unstable moisture level is one of the major causes of fruit cracking. You need to wet your field atleast every morning (and probably morning and evening at the peak of dry season), this way you can be sure your plants are getting stable and required volume of water. And when you apply mulch, you can be sure of having a stable soil moisture and control UV radiation on the soil. And to your second question. With the explanations above, you can guess my answer is NO Thank you |
Re: Bountiful First Harvest In My Tomato Farm by ideepaul: 1:52pm On Oct 22, 2020 |
Obatobi1:yes I didn't mulch, but irregular irrigation? No, we had excessively high rainfall between mid-April to June, if not for the high ridges we did and maybe liming, it would have been disastrous. How much is the 1.2m mulch? And was yours the 300m length? I haven't used it before, so how long could it last if managed properly, and used continuously |
Re: Bountiful First Harvest In My Tomato Farm by Obatobi1(m): 2:00pm On Oct 22, 2020 |
brtrip: I use NPK, calmag, DAP. Some by fertigation and others by side placement/dressing. Some fortnightly and others monthly |
Re: Bountiful First Harvest In My Tomato Farm by Obatobi1(m): 2:06pm On Oct 22, 2020 |
ideepaul: If you had mulched, you might no have had that much challenges. Yes, I have used the 300m length before and its quite good. If well managed, you could use it up to 5 or 6 seasons |
Re: Bountiful First Harvest In My Tomato Farm by ideepaul: 2:13pm On Oct 22, 2020 |
Obatobi1:The financial implications held me down, pls if I am not asking too much , could you share the cost of your current mulch sir |

Obatobi1:Pls how fruity is your Piquante Red compare to Demon f1? |
Re: Bountiful First Harvest In My Tomato Farm by Obatobi1(m): 5:58pm On Dec 14, 2020 |
waxingmoon:. To start with, Piquante red is hot pepper (ata rodo) while Demon F1 is chilli pepper (finger pepper, usually used to make powdered pepper). Piquante has larger fruits and fills up a bag/sac/basket more quickly than demon, while the fruits on demon plants are usually more though smaller (finger shape). After harvesting, demon produces fruits much quicker than piquante. See the difference in the picture attached 1 Share

Re: Bountiful First Harvest In My Tomato Farm by safarifarms(m): 9:23am On Dec 16, 2020 |
ideepaul:From my little experience on a very small scale backyard garden, tomato fruit cracking is caused by irregular watering. If the plant has been starved of water for a while and then water become available later it will suck up excess water to the fruits. The sudden surge of water to the fruits causes the cracking. |
Re: Bountiful First Harvest In My Tomato Farm by safarifarms(m): 9:36am On Dec 16, 2020 |
Obatobi1 can tomato do well beside a palm plantation where the area gradually begins to be shaded from past 12pm and fully shaded by 5pm. I'd used it for pumpkin this year and wondering if I can switch to tomato next year. By the way the pumpkin didn't seem to be affected. Though I don't know if it would have performed better elsewhere. |
