My own question is this:

With this directive to link all SIMs to NIN,can somebody still have more than one SIM, please?

Its a tricky question. I believe the NIN synchronisation will force the hands of telcos into either pushing the period of recycling backward, say two years or might be totally abolished.

Even before now, there have been instances where an old customer's details still show up on new customer details on specific telco work tools.

The NIN synchronisation does not in any way favour telcos because a sizeable amount of their gross comes from SIM sales. The idea of recycling in the first place is to leave no stone unturned. But with the new move, it would mean your number becomes your identity, and as such, can't be handled carelessly.

The fact that Nigeria government is so reckless in managing the affairs of this country and not giving the population time to do the needful. This is a welcome development whereby someone's identity can be traceable. Whites can easily track their citizens through means like this so why can't Nigerians be happy about the development since we don't even know our population.
People are only against the timing. So stop Nigerians are not happy about it

Of course it should stop them. Law will be made banning recycling of phone numbers. Even if you have lost your sim card for 5 years, you will still be able to retrieve it since your details is still there. Only that a heavy fine may be charged.

This is one of the reasons Nigerians are banned from entering the US. If this is achieved, it will improve our security and citizens identification.

you are very correct. number is infinite. recycling phone numbers is meaningless. phone number should be another form of identity. it should be permanent for the owner. just like bank account number, it should be permanent.

Your number linked to your bvn is already you identity. That number has you biometric. That number is linked already to your NIN, driver's license, passport, voter's card. If you do a print out of your BVN page, you will see this info. The ministry is trying to create a semblance of being smart why she is grossly dumb. You can retrieve your bank account number with your phone number, license number, etc.

No... I don't think so but this NIN registration is a waste of time looking at the present situation in the country.
Many people don't have NIN, some are secondary school students, some are local village people who must times find it difficult to retrieve their lost sim due to long queue so they result to buying a fresh sim, some people don't even know what NIN is all about.

How can you give a country with more than 100 million active internet users just two weeks when you know that one quarter of the country don't have NIN.

Even the timing is wrong... Giving from 15th to 30th of December is wickedness, in this festive season you want people to start queueing on the line in ever network center across the country.

Currently I'm not sure if the registration for NIN is still on, so how will people who haven't register get registered before 30 December.

These people needs to stop frustrating us... We are not animals. They can move it to next year when the covid-19 cases and businesses are normalized.

Update
Giving only 200 centers for NIN registration is useless, why not extend it to local government so that people can come out and register.
And what about BVN, Voters Card is that not enough for registration.

If they can use voters card for election why not use it for this registration also, that's accessible to the people because many people have it.

I build any kind of website
Pay when the job is completed

"Don't just say it is a waste of time".........is your personal opinion.

This is a great move........... support it!

Don't just criticize because of ur personal opinion..............E get why!

Make them no go use ur sim to demand for Ransom from kidnapped victim family

That mean anybody can take a phone number to him to dig out details and information, I think that's how those 419 callers use to get peoples details, they will call your names and other details.
.. And now that they wanted to add National ID , those road side guys will abuse the system the more

The DG of NIMC wants to prove that he did some work but unwittingly, displaying a very high level of incompetence and failure.

Only if we had a listening President!

Only if our President could read it!

Yes, well, true. You are correct in some ways, save the goal this time is to prevent people from owning not more than four SIM cards; one from the 4 major ISPs.

SIM registrations never needed a BVN. All they needed before now was a valid, government-approved ID. The number or SIM was never mapped via BVN. This time, it will be different as a number mapped by NIN won't be recycled into the market as against the usual practice.

There is no doubt that this sudden move is coming on the heels of the ENDSARS movement. The suddenness or note of urgency is an indication that the government is likely desperate at preventing another protest. Perhaps I am overthinking the situation.

You have made a valid point. Let me add that our ever-competing telcos recycle numbers to avoid being accused of any form inactivity. If you get on the NCC's website, you'll discover they publish from time to time reports from their monitoring of the networks. So, you see the numbers of active and inactive subscribers on each. No telco wants to be seen as going about with an empty pride in case of a very high percentage of inactive subscription. Also, it is a waste of resources. Plus there may be some sort of regulatory measure against them from NCC.

So, to tackle this challenge, NCC and the telcos have to calm down and think outside the box, if needed. Because the best option is to ensure nobody is allowed to change their phone number: they may have two or three but not more. No number should be recycled without a certificate of death or sufficient acceptable proofs of permanent emigration.

Then NIMC should have and manage a central data pool containing all information on every resident in Nigeria, citizen or foreigner. The information will be coming from CBN and other banks, NIS, NCC and telcos, FRSC, NPC, INEC, and the rest of them that have kept collecting same data from us. So, your number (s) remains yours till death.

The implications and benefits are innumerable including proper registration from birth to death, prevention and easy tackling of crimes and fraudulent practices in all facets of living and governance. Then Nigeria will be ready for paradise experience.

It is not a rocket science; it is doable. But will our criminally minded political leaders do it?

I don't have NIN, I applied since 2015 till date one story or the other so I left it for them. I'm sure millions of Nigerians have the same story, I don't have time for this, the last time I went through this stress was during BVN registration and this made me use my father's account number for several years until almost everyone had BVN and registration became easy. All I need is a source of internet and use whatsapp for calls only. I barely make or receive offline calls anyway.

For many years they have refused to update our electoral system just because it's favouring them to remain in power without our votes but they are now rushing to monitor peoples sim just because they are calling them out for bad governance
Re: With The NIN Synchronisation In Place, What Happens To Number Recycling? by Barryseal: 8:34am On Dec 17, 2020
All these coming on the back of the revelation that the FG has been tapping our phones. The desperation adding the NIN number to every phone line suggests something fishy is about to happen. Alot of people will disappear before the next elections.
Our online activities will be checked by the regime. Infact, this is the phase one of the social media bill. Open your eyes lads!

If you provided the number during your sim registration, you don't need to link it again. If you haven't, you need to link it by visiting your telco or its Internet link

Multiple SIMs all tied to one single NIN..
Just the same way multiple Bank Accounts across many different banks are tied to one Single BVN belonging to one single person..

With time, the NIN Synchronisation will be fully completed for all the phone numbers in existence, meaning that every phone number in existence belongs to a known human being, and information about the owner of the phone number can be easily retrieved from the NIN Database, would the Network Providers still continue to be doing Number Recycling?
..
I need expert responses please.
We should do this to voters card too. Its the most important.
