*Only God can effectively supervise Nigeria’s border with Niger —Buhari*

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, says only God can effectively “supervise” the border Nigeria shares with the Republic of Niger.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President spoke while receiving in audience former Vice President Namadi Sambo, who heads ECOWAS Election Mission to the Republic of Niger.

The statement was titled, ‘President Buhari pledges support for polls in Republic of Niger, describes outgoing President as ‘very decent man”.

Adesina quoted the President as promising that Nigeria will give robust support to the Republic of Niger, which holds presidential and national assembly elections later this month.

He was also said to have applauded President Mahamadou Issoufou, for not attempting to tamper with the Constitution of his country, and elongate his stay in power, after serving for the maximum two terms.

Buhari said, “I come from Daura, few kilometers to Republic of Niger, so I should know a bit about that country.

“The President is quite decent, and we are regularly in touch. He is sticking to the maximum term prescribed by the Constitution of his country.

“Also, we share more than 1,400 kilometers of border with that country, which can only be effectively supervised by God.

“I will speak with the President, and offer his country our support. We need to do all we can to help stabilise the Sahel region, which is also in our own interest.”

The statement further quoted Sambo as congratulating Buhari on the successful return of abducted schoolboys from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, in Katsina State, and also his 78th birthday, last week.

He pledged that ECOWAS would ensure peaceful and fair elections in the Republic of Niger, despite current political, legal, and security issues, adding that meetings were already being held with the relevant stakeholders.

Wow shocked

Sometimes I wonder how people call God in things they can do. Is more of an insult to be honest.

If you can do something I don't see the reason to ask God to do it for you. All you should ask him is grace to do it well as you planned.

How on earth will a president say such. Does he mean insecurity is above him? And if it is, then Buhari is not fit to rule Nigeria. Let's be realistic!

Gosh if I were Buhari I would spend money on military gadget than 56 bn on Biro and pen under his government. I will equip the Nigeria army with the latest gadget because the security of the people should be first !

For once I agree with Bubu...

The problem with our borders is that they were arbitrary lines drawn in the sand at the Berlin confence of 1885, by colonilaisits , most of whom did not know the land they were carving up...and subsequently people were just split into groupings they knew nothing about.

When the OAU came along, they signed a pact to 'respect the borders'...so the colonial borders became reality.

But let's be honest, they are still lines on the ground. What Buhari said can be said for most African borders....excepting probably South Africa...which has something of a fence so to speak

And while what he said is wrong....adequately fencing and improving security along our borders is going to cost a lot of money

(P.S This comment does not mean I approve of the insecurity of our borders, and the insincerity of our government in dealing with the insecurity. The problem is, the basis of the borders themselves get k-leg. The OAU knew this in 1963, but since the alternative was crisis ....they kept the old borders)

We are too religious and deeply sentimental, spiritually in this part of the world, how can God effectively supervise our borders, the government must first of all do the right things, by adequately training and catering for the welfare of the human beings in charge of these borders.

Nonsense. I hate when we drag God to things we can do ourselves. Other countries secure their borders effectively without God, other countries tackle insurgency to a halt without God except Nigeria. Some people will say only God can give us 24hrs power supply. How come other countries enjoy such without God? Some parts or Russia and China make use of coal to generate electricity. Why can't the government of enugu state go over there and see how things are done and use the coal they have in abundance to generate power
Norway makes use of refuse dump to generate power that they even ran out of waste and had to import. Why can't the government of Abia state ask what type of waste in particular can be used to generate electricity and use the waste they have in abundance
The south can make use of excess gas to generate power while the north makes use of solar. We instead believe in handling it to God while looting the funds meant for it
Higher institutions are still on strike while our counterparts in other countries are learning. The ministers, governors, senators all have their kids schooling outside. The wife of the president went to Dubai for check up. That simply means for over 5 years her husband has been president , he hasn't done anything in the health sector to make her want to have her treatment here in Nigeria
