Flakeyy:
Hello everyone. Compliments of the season. I just got my PR and we're planning to land next month. Please I have a few questions and I'll appreciate if you guys can put me through.

1. I'm pregnant. We plan to land in Toronto, and I'll be about 35weeks gone by then. Does Ontario still do the 3 months wait before we're eligible for health insurance?? If yes, please which province issues health insurance within a week??

2. I'm an accountant, practiced a little with my degree, but I've been in the banking sector for the past 1year. I want to practice with my degree and do the CPA. But I don't have ACCA or ICAN, and all I've read on the first thread are for people converting their ACCA or ICAN to CPA. I would like to know which is easier and cost effective. Do the CPA exams from the scratch, or do a diploma or Masters that covers some or all of the CPA courses
I would be grateful if I can get clarification from a landed senior.

Thank you
1. Ontario has waved the 3 months wait since the pandemic started. Why not message them as regards your pregnancy case. https://www.ontario.ca/page/apply-ohip-and-get-health-card#:~:text=Ontario%20is%20waiving%20the%20three,the%20criteria%20for%20OHIP%20coverage. Everything you also need to know is on their website.

2. Since you don't have acca, there is no cost effective way. Starting the cpa from scratch will cost you over 13000- 15,000 over 2 years. Better than going for a diploma or masters as those ones will cost you more.

Hi Flakeyy, i presume you are traveling with your family. Do you have an AL (authorization letter to travel ) or you are just taking the courage to travel irrespective. I am taking the boldness to travel in 2 months time after seeing some encouraging messages here. cheers

Hello dear, yes I'll be traveling with my family. I'm also taking courage from testimonials I've read here. It will be another long wait with Accra having the baby in Nigeria.

Thanks for this response sir. If one intends to start from scratch, are there schools that offer this program and do you know if the course is eligible under OSAP

Hello, Congratulations on your PR visa . Ontario has waived the 3 months rule because of COVID 19. I don’t know if they will go back to norm after the pandemic. If you have questions about having a baby in Ontario, you can message me. Sorry I don’t have answers to your other questions as Accounting is not my field.

Are you sure about court marriage being the only marriage recognized by IRCC? Can you provide a link to that information. As far as I know, unless things have changed now, the requirement for marriage to be recognized in Canada is if the marriage is recognized in the jurisdiction where it was performed.

From personal experience (not hear say), I personally did not have a court marriage so also was my brother. We both had only Nikkah. He has been living in Canada since 1988 and I since 2001. So, unless things have changed, Nikkah is recognized in Canada since it is a recognized marriage in Nigeria were the marriage occurred.

Well, IRCC website states that the marriage must be valid under the jurisdiction in the country and under Canadian Federal law , not only under the jurisdiction in the country. The word legally recognized was also put in bold. I gave my comment based on my understanding of what was on IRCC website. I think someone already said she used Nikkah certificate for her application and she was good. I hope she makes the best decision for her.

Hello House,

I am trying to commence my application from ACCA to CPA from outside Canada as I await PPR. a lot has changed with the process especially with BC that used to accept applications from outside Canada.

Anyone with information on the process to apply through BC MRA and Alberta should pls reach out.

Thank you.

I have read of several instances where customary wedding was accepted. Court wedding is not the only acceptable wedding by IRCC as different religion/cultural background comes into play here and they know and respect this.

I saw that someone you're dating is considered an extended family member under current COVID rules.

Any idea on how this might affect someone already in Canada if sending letter of invitation for visit?

NaijaCanadian28:

The only kind of marriage recognized by IRCC is court wedding so you’re technically single in IRCC’s eyes. If you have been living together for at least two years and meet other criteria, you can claim common law. If you don’t fall in any of the categories I mentioned, your spouse has to fill in his express entry profile that he’s single, he can add you after you have done the court marriage.

Hi

Is there a WhatsApp/telegram group for Ontario residents I can join.

Please.. I just landed recently, and I really want to get started with my life
Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant Part 2 by Chocs(f): 8:48pm On Dec 29, 2020
Hello SKEPTA,

You can apply for SIN online. You’ll need a scanned copy/clear picture of your:

study permit

international passport and

proof of accommodation (it can be Airbnb, hotel etc, house lease, basically any house address that has your name on it where the letter can be sent to)

You’ll also need to input a Canadian phone number as well. If you don’t have one you can use “text me” app to get a number, or use a friend’s phone number if they agree.

Officially they say it takes 20 days, but it takes far less than that. Mine was sent 2 days after I applied.

You can google “apply for SIN online Canada” and the web page would come up.

All the best

I understand your point. However, the next sentence in that same link also indicates that a marriage that is legally recognized according to the law of the place where it occurred is usually recognized in Canada. So, by this statement and since Nikkah is legally recognized in Nigeria, it is usually recognized in Canada as well.
