I think there's a lot of exaggeration about Orlu

Exaggeration?

Even the Eastern Palm university built by Okorocha govt in Ideato near Orlu, and which a government committee asked to be used for IMSU, hoteliers, brothel owners and native rent seekers in Owerri lobby for Eastern Palm university to rot away.

In 1km space, you have 2 government subsidized tertiary education institutions - IMSU and AIFCE- in Owerri. There are other 4 around.

In Orlu, only a School for the Mentally And Physically Handicapped has been allowed all the decades.
Orlu and Owerri started Imo state as urban areas.
Nothing to attract development and government attention to Orlu.

Yet some people defend the exaggeration with tertiary education institutions of government in Owerri.

Anyone defending the exaggeration in Owerri is fit to be named Satan.

You are from Oru I guess. The earlier you start clamoring for development in Oru east and west, the better for you. If the Governor fails to develop his local government now, that’s the end. grin cheesy

Do not involve me in your madness on this thread because I am not posting to please or displease anyone.

Meanwhile, I still insist that the Imo axis of the Ihiala-Orlu road is very bad. Hope Uzodinma should fix the road with immediate effect
But common sense should tell u that is a federal road.

Orlu-Ihialla Road is the most economically important road to Orlu.

A government of good will can repair it and ask for refund from the federal government.

If you dance to govt’s renewal of Owerri urban roads and drainage every four years, but leave Orlu-Ihiala road rotten all these years, it is like dancing to sabotage of the economy of Orlu, and by extension, Imo state.

Just look at ursef, ur argument is not even a valid one. Let me ask u the following questions:
1. Who told u Obiano fixed the Anambra axis?
2. Assuming Obiano fixed it(as u claimed), what if ur governor doesn't have money to fix his own axis? Nobody will crucify him, after all it is the responsibility of the federal government to fix. It is just like reprimanding u for failing to tar the road passing through ur father's compound because someone else somewhere used his personal fund to tar the road passing his own father's compound (even though it is the responsibility of the state or local government). Let me ask u, how many roads have to fixed in ur community? I know of so many of ur mates that have done that in their various communities.

Nigerian cities really have a long way to go before we catch up with others. This is a small Kenyan city that is probably the size of Owerri or even less yet see how beautiful it is with high rise buildings, good roads, trees and flowers planted everywhere with road markings but here in Owerri all we have are one drunk or mad governor after another. Instead of developing Owerri with passion they keep demolishing the little they met on ground. What a big shame!

well clamouring isn't spamming an imo state thread on Nairaland. All of our governors have been from our zone since inception, so its not a political issue. Owerri found a niche for its self in providing entertainment for the oversized diaspora and good working environments (most ppl use hotels to work because of the wifi silence and ac) for ppl all over the state.

99.9% of what is in a city, any city, is privately built and owned. So ISG won't make Orlu equal to Owerri

In bold:
Listen to yourself once again.

Truth is: the 3 government universities and 3 government polytechnics in Owerri dragged 99.9% of private properties to Owerri.

Let IMSG open Eastern Palm university as advised by Ihedioha government committee, or let IMSG establish a 2nd state multi discipline university in Orlu;
before 5 years, Orlu shall be approaching the development level of Owerri. Edo state has 2nd state university from the university built by Adams Oshiomwole.

I really don't get your point. Is the video I posted not Kisumu city centre? Is Owerri city centre or any of our cities that beautiful with the good roads, sidewalks, trees, covered gutters and all? This is supposed to be a city from a poor third world African country yet all you do is go look for a slum in its suburbs to prove what exactly?

The truth is that Bank road, Wetherel and other parts of Owerri can be made to be even more beautiful than that Kenyan city if our governors are up and doing. Instead all we have here are bad roads, open gutters, no sidewalks, no trees or flowers or even road markings, everything is poor and mediocre! A government will manage to build a little one another will come in demolish it and the circle continues.

Look at this thread and all you see are just hotels being built by individuals and nothing more, no significant government intervention aside demolitions.

but there's no part of Owerri that looks like what I presented so you logic is flawed. Your right that governors can do better but this mentality of always having to compare ignorantly isn't helping another. Do people live in a city center? Isn't it the suburbs that are more important? A better Owerri is not Kishamu

You're not getting the point, the aim is for us to keep demanding better for our cities. How much will it cost the government to plant trees and flowers, cover our drains, mark our roads and put sidewalks? It costs very little compared to what is spent on adverts or even looted. One of the reasons why they don't do these things is also because we the masses do not even know that these basic things ought to be in place.

My brother, you're not more passionate about Owerri more than me and I have promoted the city far more than you can even imagine.

In today's world, perception is everything. Kisumu has a city centre that is beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, that is what they use as a selling point in attracting tourists. Owerri too is trying to carve out a niche as a relaxation centre, the best way to evolve in that is to develop a city centre or sections that can be world class, these areas/sections is what would be circulated all over the internet and people would be wowed to visit Owerri. Even Abuja has slums and ghettos too but the perception people have of Abuja is that of a beautiful city because the city centre is enchanting.

It wouldn't cost government much to pick out sections of Owerri and make it enchanting. Commercial cities like Aba and Onitsha may not see it as a priority to beautify but for Owerri that relies heavily on outsiders coming in to relax, flex and spend, beautification is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT.

Ibadan was a mass of dingy houses but Awolowo realized how damaging it would be to have a city with a skyline that looks like a massive ghetto and he had to build the cocoa house, a few other private investors built similar high rises and it helped them to have a small section they can always showcase to the world.

We are lucky in Igboland to have cities with presentable houses built by individuals, our governors can and should be made to do more. Owerri and Enugu need to have tushed up CBD's.
Re: Few Pics From Imo State by imaxdocuments: 9:18am On Jan 04, 2021
Stop putting Onitsha on the same sentence/scale with Aba because they are wide apart in the area of good governance. Put Owerri and Aba instead, they have a lot of similarities when it comes to roads particularly.

You're on point 100%. Owerri itself has the best good housing ratio aside Abuja in Nigeria but the roads do not measure up to the quality of private structures. More money should be invested in street beautification like Okorocha did with those demolished rocky waterfalls at Freedom Square. Hilly greenery, tree planting and good walkways will make a big difference.

Okorocha understood the importance of beautification though the quality of his projects weren't great. That freedom falls was already attracting lots of people and photographers especially on weekends when you will see them taking pictures and having picnics. It had a touristic feel. Even that Akachi Tower too wasn't a bad idea and it was already attracting visitors too but they were demolished. The current governor too has demolished all the roundabouts in Owerri and I heard they're about to bring back Eke Onuwa market to Douglas road. All these are very retrogressive and disgusting acts.

Good, but apart from the Orlu/ihiala road, what is the condition of other roads in Okporo?

Madam, I was in Orlu last year August and I tell you the fact based on what I saw. Be sincere to yourself and answer my question, what is the condition of the same road in Anambra axis especially at the ihiala junction that connects with Onitsha/Owerri road, is Imo axis of the road not better than the one in Anambra or the road just damaged within the space of 4months?
