QSFemi:
Happy new year.

I pray 2021 will be a great year for us all.

Now, I want to address the question or concern of this person.

I'm a practising Quantity Surveyor, as such I've the obligation to respond to issues like this.

First of all, Quantity Surveyors arrive at estimated construction costs based on available documents - drawings, specifications and approved instructions.

What I've observed in my years of experience that could cause significant difference between a QS estimate and the actual cost of construction is mostly "difference in specifications between the construction (QS) specifications as stated in the Bill of Quantities and the actual specifications done on site".

I want to cite an example. A QS can describe in his BOQ that oversite concrete (german floor) to be 150mm (6-inch) thickness. During construction, many project supervisors will never do 150mm thickness on site. Most would rather do 75mm to 100mm. This will significantly reduce the estimated cost thereby making clients to think that QS estimate are over bloated. This is just one example out of many decisions that happen during construction.

How do will solve this problem?

Answer: Engage your QS beyond pre-construction duties. Engage the QS during the construction of the project for he can easily identify this gap and fill it swiftly.

Conclusively, QS do not "over-egg" bills like that person thought.

Have a blissful year ahead.

Powerful!

In order to have an objective answer, I'll advice you include the dimensions (length and breadth) of the building and the height of your Kingpost.

Here is the quotation I was given for the roofing of a very modest and normal size Three Bedroom and one Self Contain Apartment. I feel the quantity for the wood and zinc is just too much hence I decided to seek your opinions. Kindly advice. Thanks alot. I will really appreciate your opinions.

I frown at the bolded. Quantity Surveyors do not "help" engineer because they weren't trained for them. Rather, the practice of Quantity Surveying is established by CAP NO 31 in 1986 by the act of the National Assembly.

Quantity Surveying practice is an independent field of practice in any country it's practised.

Quantity Surveyors are on the side of the project. Of course, engineers can patronise the services offered.

michlins:
Good day everyone. I want to clear something up. Every businessman have his or her own principle and terms of working. If you ask for my opinion on the cost of doing a job and the materials you think will be enough, I can help you with that but asking me to review a quotation of another welder is something I will NEVER do. I don't know what he intends to do and how he intends to achieve it.

Some quotation maybe over bloated not because the welder or artisan intends to rip off the client but because costing the materials it will take to complete a job is something many can't do. That's why quantity surveyors help engineers. Y'all will agree with me that most artisans are barely literate to communicate in english and we're talking about mathematics here. Sometimes it's innocent mistake and other times greed. Either way, it's not my duty to point out which for anyone.

You have to factor also that the cost of materials and living differ from place to place. A single door I can make with #20,000 costs above #35,000 in Lagos.

Having said the above, I regret any inconveniency it causes this forum and its established guidelines. Enjoy the new year

Thanks Boss for your response

As requested, see my feedback

1. The hight is est. 3 Step block and that's the Entrance were the spoiler chair is... From the chair to the right hand side

2. It's going to be residential but no plan for kickoff now.... Still gathering capital to begin the process

Because your building plans is still in the future I'll advice you just fill the land with the sand to your desired level. It's called land reclamation. Ensure the demolished building+road excavated sand has more of the excavated sand so that it can settle by itself over time. If you can bargain less for the sand it will be nice and hope it's a 10 tyre tipper that will be heaped to the top.

Road excavated sands are good and most economical for such purpose especially when they are closer to your site at a give-away price.

Good morning All,
I need to give some observation, read carefully.
As a silent reader I notice the trend of everyone wanting a steel tank stand, and materials suggestion keeps going on kindly notice the following.

Steel section are choose from expected load (tank size) ..but the bracing are always strategically place to reduce section at times or for stiffness purpose

If a steel section works in Lagos for example doesn't mean same will work in Abuja the wind pressure in each state in Nigeria is significantly different according to the wind isopleth data, so when assume this is always dangerous..

Section like UC, UB Angle iron etc all have minor axis and major axis meaning the direction of face are of important, reason you see people using CHS (recommended sizes) u don't have to worry about any local bending its strong all through .

The base plate need to be check like wise the HDB(hold down bolt)

The foundation this is important and done with three things put into consideration (weight of the steel ,wght of water , wind reactions on the structure ,live load of access also)

Not to bore you much your tank may be over designed (waste of money at least safe sha) or under designed (total waste of money and intending disaster waiting to happen)

A tank stand is a structural elements you should never toy with it because its failure is always a serious issues.

I PM’d you!

Good morning Sir
Thank you for the honest review

All points are noted.... Yes the escalated sand are close to my site but those guys are insisting 17k. I will continue to prize it to suit me

At the moment, am not sure if it's the 10tyre tipper as the guys are on break due to the festive season.... Will confirm once they resume

Hmmm!

_______
As I was reading this post, the project below came to mind. Steel structures are designed to specifications and not “as the spirit led.”
I believe someone would be telling the design team “If all the trusses connect at a point... blah, blah...”

I stick with my steel fabricator because he always ask for the engineering drawing for every small structures we are building.

He’s on the team of the guys that built Obasanjo Tank Farm. Just in case anyone need references grin

After pop installers messed up my wall tiles yesterday, i was wondering the best way to get those stains off, a Bing search got me here: https://www.kobocity.com/d/17-removing-cement-stains-from-tiles

/
You should have done the POP first.

Or buy nylon and use masking tapes to cover the tiles as work progresses.

Finishing has always been the biggest challenge in construction in Nigeria. It is sad to hear Togolese and Ghanaians taking over plastering jobs in Nigeria because it seems they are more patient with their skills. That's what I heard...never used them.

Anyone in the forum that can deliver wooden doors with good finishing the way Michlins deliver steel doors. My project is in a coastal area hence don't want to use steel because of rust. Please I don't want people showing jobs copied from internet as their own.

Let's do this again, which do you prefer, and why?

The high roof, or the contemporary style?

I dislike the high roof, and prefer contemporary roof, however this your choice of contemporary roof is too simple,.. i also dont like it.
Try using a better style of contemporary roof as in pics below.

I like contemporary roof cos of the following

1. More pleasing to the eye
2. You can install solar panels DISCREET LY ,&optimally and also solar water heater.

3. Easy to combine roof sitout
4. Cheaper than the common steep roof
