The best way to approach him to discuss your rent increment is by getting a bottle of wine,a fertile female goat,a Rolex watch and don't forget to go along with the land receipt of the 50/50 plot of land you just acquired showed them to him and tell him to go to hell.

You're a goat grin

Best approach is you either move out or pay up the new increased rent.

Most tenants renew their rents at the beginning of the year. Based on my tenancy agreement,I renewed my rent early than expected because I had a lot of activities lined up for the year that will require money. Besides, I don't want landlord to remind me that my rent has expired.

In previous years, I renewed my rent on the second week of the beginning of the month so that I don't send a signal of abundance on my side. Sometimes, I pay in arrears even when the money is there.

I was surprised that after making the payment, I got a notification of increment of rent effective from January, 2022.

My family has been very peaceful tenant since we parked in. I have thought through the notice to find the best way to approach him to withdraw the increment without him giving me an option to park out if I am not comfortable.

Please advise me on the best approach to use in this situation.

Okay, now I see the bolded.

Honestly, you don't have a case here. You have an entire year notice. Inflation and bad economy have also caught up with house rent.

I'm afraid there's nothing you can do to stop the increment.

Some landlords are of the devil.
With all the predicament facing someone, increasing house rent is what they feel they can add to the already filled plate?
My landlord is A VERY GOOD MAN.
He has a lovely wife and they are VERY considerate. Who said and Igbo landlord isn’t good? I would gladly have him as a landlord till i leave this shithole.
Sometimes, it’s not always about money.. But doing right by a fellow human.
Some of this landlords push young men into stealing and illegalities to stay afloat. Which shouldn’t be so.
Most of the good landlords I have stay in their house are Igbos. They get better understanding

The increment is to take effect from 2022.

Yea... I just saw it.
The landlord is a good man then

If Op feels he can't cope, he should start making plans of leaving the apartment by end of 2021. I don't think he will succeed in getting the house owner to stop the increase come 2022

When I was in Nursing School. My landlord was nice to me. I don't know why. Even when I didn't have enough money to complete my rent at a time, I went to explain to him and he agreed and was just smiling. He just said he understands and collected the half payment I brought.

He was a kind landlord but his wife likes looking at me with bad eyes anytime I pass to go to school. I don't know why.

I'm glad I'm off there.

It's like almost all the landlord in the world had a meeting concerning rent increment. But the truth is, the economy is not looking up and people are not really finding things easy.

The problem I have with my Landlord is the devil incarnate in person of Agent/Caretaker, managing his properties.

He's always on the Landlord to increase the house rent. He came last year to deliver the bad news... This is the third time he's bringing such news but I always ignored him and pay directly into the Landlord Account. And once Baba confirm payment...Life is Good. cool

As an annual tenant, you are entitled to 6months notice. The landlord gave 1year notice so he is in order.

You may politely appeal to him to reduce the rent or extend the time, with your good reasons. If he doesn't, you either stay & pay the new rent or you start planning to pack.

Inflation.

One year notice is sufficient. Try to find out the fair market rate of your apartment in that area then you can write back with a counter offer based on that. If he doesn't accept, a quit notice is probably the next thing you will get and you have enough time to make arrangements.

By paying your rent in advance, you have activated the next rent on the previous agreement.
The supposed increment will commence or start to count at the expiration of the rent which has been paid in advance.
Your landlord will not be able to quit you because the odds are heavily stacked against him.

Tell him that you have already paid your rent before the supposed increment.
He will most likely be forced to negotiate the increment.

You landlord is a seer.

He has seen a vision that your income will increase beyond your imagination in the 3rd quarter of this year and Nigerians will get a ratified minimum wage of 100k per month in the last quarter of this year.

Be glad OP!
on the minimum can you explain better
