Because that all they were trained to do

There are alot of factors to consider before opting for a root canal treatment.
They are
1. Cost: Root canal is not a cheap procedure and after its completion the tooth needs to be crowned(capped). This ideally in a govt hospital cost nothing less than 50k in Nigeria. Also it requires multiple visits.
2. Availability of equipment: Some centers don't have x-ray machines and an ideal root canal treatment requires minimum of four x-rays. This may make it impossible to carry out.
3. Tooth health status: Not all teeth are restorable. Many are badly broken down so much that the prognosis for a root canal treatment may be very poor.
4. Tooth support: the bony support for a tooth may be inadequate to hold a tooth and root canal may not be feasible......

Listen, I can tell you I know many of our Nigerian dentists working with the NHS here and doing very well.

I honestly don't know of it's Laziness or what but Nigeria Doctors always go for the last option which is Extraction.

They would rather opt for Extraction and would never suggest root canal treatment, even if a person have removed 4teeths, they will still opt for Extraction.

Most developed country would be happy to do all they can and when there is no way out again before they opt for Extraction. Keeping as much natural teeth as possible is the best, why then do Nigeria dentist always opt for Extraction?

Sadly, if you insist on restorative measures, the will tagged you stubborn patient. Tired much.
The cost of root canal is expensive

That's the best option available

I doubt it...

A friend was told to extract due to a persistent tooth issue.

When he came to me, I suggested Euthymol toothpaste with CA-C 1000 and painkillers...

Well, he has not felt pain and has been using his full dental cavity wholly well going on 3 years plus.

This opinion of yours is too generalistic. Let's start from conducting a survey, how many people here know about Root canal treatment.
That being said, the awareness is poor, most Nigerians come to the dentists with grossly broken do teeth, which in most cases aren't amenable to RCT. Mind you, RCT is just a step in saving a tooth, what's more important is how that tooth will function after RCT. Furthermore, RCT is expensive and time consuming, tell a patient he/she has to spend like 100k to save a tooth, they will be like, just an ordinary tooth, please remove the tooth. To say dentists are lazy is very unfair.

My experience with those Dentists wasn't funny.

I went to the teaching hospital in Ondo state for my tooth that ached me all night. He looked at it and told me he was going to extract it, but requested that I must go do a tooth scan in shoprite first. He insisted It must be shoprite and even gave me a paper to take there. why shoprite?

Las-las, dem remove my tooth o

the fault is from the patient and not doctor. you well see a person having toothache and you won't go to the hospital to know what is happening and you will prefer using fuel or going to iyanoba market to meet aboki and the aboki will tell you that it's worm that is there, he will give you something to apply so that the worm will die. after a year or two the crown of the tooth us already gone. so how will the RCT work. just answer this question op

Very common and very rampant in our society.
When my daughter was having toothache and visible swelling cheek, I told my wife to take her to the state government owned hospital. After meeting the dentist and secured appointment for the next day, my wife began to tell me that we should be using local things. Apparently, she was afraid, just like many Nigerians are afraid of CS even in worst pregnancy cases. I spent over 12k. One tooth removed, four filled. And the kid got better.

My daughter's case was handled better and satisfactorily in a state owned hospital. Many Nigerians wouldn't seek professional help in time, they would have used this and that to destroy the teeth roots before going to the right place for help. That also includes eye problem

The problem doesn't end when you get rid of the infected tooth, you have to get rid of the worms disturbing the tooth nd not the tooth itself, why do you think the problem persists after removing the infected tooth, it's because, the worms are still living in there and will immediately start feasting on a new one, once their host has been taken, this new one takes time before one starts to notice, by the time it has eaten deep into the infected tooth is when you start to feel the pain, stop removing your tooth, or else you'll end up removing more than two, because the worms disturbing the tooth is still alive, been battling with mine since primary sch till date, herbs is all I've been using for it, now the affected tooth is breaking by itself, I hardly feel the pains. We do not remove our head simply because we are suffering from headache, rather we use drugs for it, why not apply same method you use in treating headache even though this one is different, the pain is out of this world, very wicked thing.

Naija dentist are mediocre but still i can give them a defense here.

Look at it from cost and affordability. To do a root canal will probably need anaesthesia, filler and polish to bond and seal the cavity.

Where do they get the gas or compound and the cement, these are probably imported. Who knows.. So to cover cost and staff overhead he must charge exhorbitantly. How many of us can pay it? And we dont have health coverage like abroad that can fund it free of charge.

So to minimize loss dentist go for cheap extraction. Im sure if the patient demand a root canal they might agree if the payment can be afforded.

Nope. Normally, going to the dentist is a yearly occurrence. Nigerians go only when they have a toothache. What do expect when a person neglects their teeth and it rots?
