This synchronisation is mainly concerned with business messaging. So in practice, there's no change in what data is shared with Facebook for non-business chats and account information.

Facebook is going to give businesses the option to use Facebook’s secure hosting infrastructure to host WhatsApp chats if they don’t wish to store the messages over their own systems.

When you sync as a business account, ads are delivered via both platforms to users which in turn leads to more revenue for Mark and his cohorts; also your business as it becomes more exposed and impacts on your sales and continual usage of their ad platforms, all things being equal.
