Established organisations require as much as 3 months payslips as part of the recruitment process.

Don't mind that one.

Just pardon his chronic ignorance.

Daaamn Nigga ma Nigga! I don't know how long you've been on Nairaland but this MwaAmaikpe guy has been the one lighting up this space with his sarcastic writings long before now. He disappeared then you came in. Do not take what he writes seriously, I repeat, do not! He's a real Nigga! To the topic, I told my current boss during the interview, after showing him some of my architectural designs that he should pay me based on what he had seen, that he should leave old matters for Matthias lol...... I'm so high. Bar man, e don do. How much is my bill? Good night everyone.

it is normal, during my interview, the expatriate asked me same question though my formal job was a private school teaching job and my salary then was 15k, but I monster courage and told the man 30k, to my suprise he was shocked; and like everything in a month? I said yes, he now said ok, the basic rate is 11k and after every it should fall around 75k to 80k and things will get bigger as the years goes by, i didn't believe it until my first salary and i got 91k+. that was some eleven years ago.

Good evening Nairalanders,

I went for an interview yesterday and among questions that was ask in the written interview is "How much was your salary in the previous school where you worked?".
I wrote " it's confidential " because I thought it isn't formal to be asking such question in an interview.

So, during the oral interview, they asked while I didn't write the amount, I told them I don't want to disclose it and I don't think it's formal. I decided not to argue it further when the principal said it's formal, even though I didn't disclose the amount in the end.

So, my people, have you ever experienced such?
And is it formal to ask applicants of the exact amount they receive as salary in the organisation where they formerly work?

Please help push it to the front page...

Never expose your previous salary cos that's how they end up underpaying people!

The right question every well-cultured organisation should ask is your salary expectation!

Maintain your stand please

Is normal for your interviewer to ask. I was asked the same question lately in an interview, I told them the amount, and they asked further why did I want to leave the company, I responded that I wanted another challenge. Lo and behold I got the job with a better salary.

That will give them the believe that you are open, meJanwhile you added something.

It is not wrong.

You stood your ground...it is your right not to disclose personal informations to employers just as it is your right to remain jobless.

I admire your doggedness and arrogance in poverty...you refused to answer it in your written interview and you got a clue to remedy this basic goof in the oral interview but your village people got the best of you.

I won't blame them for not eventually employing you either. Someone who writes like this is not fit to be a janitor in a local school let alone a teacher.

it is not standard. it is also not by force. you guys should stop turning abnormality to normal. even abroad, there is nowhere they would ask you to write it dow, the highest is expectation and maybe during an interview on a casual note, they can ask. you are not obliged to answer that question. they should tender their offer, if it sits well with you, fine, if not, you either ask for something better or don't accept it.!

Bros,

When you finish school and start attending interviews, come back here and tell us it's not standard. Meanwhile stop referring to a bogus and non-existent "abroad" you're yet to even experience.

The Op did nothing wrong.I was once an headteacher and i can tell u that the motive behind that question is to know how to cheat him or at most to know if they can afford his service. He could have given a bogus amount though. His choice.

98% of Nigerian schools shouldn’t be mentioned when we are talking of the standard recruitment process. They are two parallel lines that don’t meet. In fact, it is an oxymoron.

As for OP, it is the norm (in Nigeria at least). They even ask for 3 months payslip to be sure you are not yarning dust. Though, many structured organizations already know what they would pay someone of your level.

It is not a big deal to answer what u earn currently and also insist on what offer u will consider.

When u grow to that level u will reveal with ease and even let them u have existing liabilities to pass to then where necessary.

It's very formal........

The potential employer wants to weigh your experience vs present wage......

The wage they might be paying you vs your interest in their wage.......

Would you leave are higher present wage to a lower potential, it might even be higher.....

It's simply a gauge and very formal question..... Safe to say, they would not be employing you.......... cheesy

The question is normal. A corporate organisation will not use that to determine your pay because they already have a pay structure for every role. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for one-man businesses.

The recruiter most times already has an idea of the pay range in your previous role.
If you cannot be transparent about your last pay, the recruiter may be left wondering what else you are hiding.

Simple! Pay me according to the standard of the company, not in accordance with my last pay.
If my last pay is ok by me, I will probably not be here with you

iHart:
I hate it when employers want to use your last salary to determine how they will be paying you.

I can remember an interview i attended. Before the interview, i managed to find out that they paid #80, 000 per month for that position. The interview was a back and forth thing until they referred me to the owner of the company. The MD needed somebody with the kind of experience i had. Me, i was tired of working in all those #30, 000 per month job, so i needed an upgrade. When the MD asked me what was my last pay in the last place i worked, i told him #35, 000. He said he was going to start paying me #30, 000, after three months he will see how i am gaining experience, then he will increase my salary. I bluntly turned down the job based on the salary. The MD asked me to go home and rethink the offer, that no job seeker turns down his offer. I went home and the next morning, just for courtesy sake, i called him and told him i was not interested. The man was shocked.

If you want to employ people, employ them and tell them what you will pay. If it is okay by them, they resume work.

Wataguan?

Are you OK at all?
Didn't you read the OP's post he said it is a teaching job and they hardly have payslip in that kind of profession except in big and standard school.

Had it been it won't affect his new pay, it would have been OK to disclose the actual amount.

You are talking about being honest, are they suppose to ask that question or ask him how much they want them to pay him because the company have already set the amount they want to pay for that role.

During my days as an employee, I did it and it worked for me in my last job.

Go through the thread, you will see others that have done it.

All I see in your response is hypocrisy.

Haha.. when I grow to what level Sir.. Anyway it's a faceless forum, and no point disclosing what I currently earn.

I ll admit, my advice may not always work for a fresh hire that needs experience, however anyone who has had a bit of experience, should never disclose this.

A job application is not a friendly meeting. It is where you decide how much you will be initially measured off and any subsequent increases will be based of that. Companies don't give a massive bump on your initial salary unless with a significant role change.

Your comment is indeed funny tho.

In fact, the higher you go, you find two employees in the same position, with same skills are not paid the same.

People need to question why companies expect their staff to be confidential with each other about their salaries, but expect new applicants to disclose this.
