Everything about recruitment in Naija is wrong

You can say that again! They also use "word on the street" references and there are no professional lines whatsoever. A certain degree of seriousness and formality is required to be successful in any endeavour - naija is too casual

it is normal, during my interview, the expatriate asked me same question though my formal job was a private school teaching job and my salary then was 15k, but I monster courage and told the man 30k, to my suprise he was shocked; and like everything in a month? I said yes, he now said ok, the basic rate is 11k and after every it should fall around 75k to 80k and things will get bigger as the years goes by, i didn't believe it until my first salary and i got 91k+. that was some eleven years ago.

It is FORMER please, not FORMAL. I don’t know why people from that part of Nigeria keep mixing them up...

Oh, I see we are on the same side on this issue.

I'm referring to the guy that said he should disclose his true previous earning.

I adviced him that should in case he already know the set amount for the new job and his last job is way too low to the new one, it is either he politely decide not to disclose it or he should raised the old one a bit to measure up. Because these employers will surely cut down the pay and divert it to themselves if he loose guide, let's say he is earning 50k before and he is going for a job of 300k. They are just looking for a way to shortchange him.
Thank you.....that's exactly where the problem lies.

The previous amount I received as salary is too low compared to my expectations from them...
And at the same time, I didn't want to tell a lie.

That's why I decided to find an escape route....

That is the end of the interview Bro.

Nothing is confidential.

It is a normal HC procedure to know your current earnings so they can decide if the deal they are offering u is fair or not.

As an hiring Manager, once u say that. The interview is over. No way you are going to the next level.

I prefer u tell me u earn 50k a month but u won't do 1 naira less than 500k a month than that 'Confidential Bull Craaap'

Infact your previous pay slip is needed before u are given offer letter in any reasonable Organization not mush room employers.

NB : please I am not talking about 30k per month job offers. So stay away. Come back when you graduate and look for a better job.

You don't have to abuse me. Stay with your believe for your next employer and blame Buhari for joblessness.

OP, I am happy to hear that you stood your ground.
The question is actually illegal.
Your current salary earning is confidential to you and your employer.
The better question for the interviewer to ask is "What is your salary expectation", tht way you both can negotiate and make a compromise.

To drive my point home, You can read up on this article.

Young Folks,

You just like to "score own-goals" at will. You mean you told a prospective employer that your salary because you "don't think it's formal"? grin grin grin grin You just wrote your resignation letter while you're yet to receive an employment letter. Bros, next time do the following;
1. Get coaching and assistance on interview techniques
2. Read books and sites on interview techniques
3. Be honest. Say things as it is..... and don't appear evasive

Meanwhile,

It is standard for a prospective employer to ask for your last salary information.
Dude, the comments I read here are confusing...

It is not wrong.

You stood your ground...it is your right not to disclose personal information to employers just as it is your right to remain jobless.

I admire your doggedness and arrogance in poverty...you refused to answer it in your written interview and you got a clue to remedy this basic goof in the oral interview but your village people got the best of you.

I won't blame them for not eventually employing you either. Someone who writes like this is not fit to be a janitor in a local school let alone a teacher.

I can't disagree with you

It's over 3 years or more than I have not commented on actively on this forum but when I see clearly how a brother is missing out due to ignorance I am push in my spirit to help you.

Next time try & be smarter, NEVER disclose your exact salary to any prospective employer but use words with range of value.

"a little more than", "somewhere around", etc.

Earning 10k, you can say that you are earning a little above......., or somewhere around......... Etc.

Personally I feel that question is very unethical and should be eradicated. It's like you (a recruiter/Hr) calling a cobbler ( job applicant ) to amend your shoes and instead of bargaining with him/her, you start asking how much he collected from a previous job, Considering the fact that there's always a 90% possibility you already have an idea of how much it will cost. Nobody goes to the market without having an idea of the cost of goods and services.
Technically speaking, that's a fraudulent Question!!!
I'll will always answer it's confidential too because actually, it is confidential.

Most structured organizations I know of in Nigeria like to keep employee wages confidential, which is why when you are trying to apply for some jobs, you may only see probable figures online, and not exact salaries. So I wonder why such organization will expect you to disclose the wage structure of another organization.

@OP: It is important you divulge how much you earn esp at the final stage of an interview. It helps the company to know how much to pay you. It goes both ways because by knowing how much the firm offers you, you can negotiate it if it is low. You really goofed. At this point, the school will intentionally offer you a lower salary using whatever deduction theory and expect you to do your worse.

Good evening Nairalanders,

I went for an interview yesterday and among questions that was ask in the written interview is "How much was your salary in the previous school where you worked?".
I wrote " it's confidential " because I thought it isn't formal to be asking such question in an interview.

So, during the oral interview, they asked while I didn't write the amount, I told them I don't want to disclose it and I don't think it's formal. I decided not to argue it further when the principal said it's formal, even though I didn't disclose the amount in the end.

So, my people, have you ever experienced such?
And is it formal to ask applicants of the exact amount they receive as salary in the organisation where they formerly work?

Please help push it to the front page...

Bra, I see a lot of folks here talking about what is confidential about your salary that you couldn't have disclosed. However, I stand by you as long as you didn't come off rude. While there is no problem with disclosing or not disclosing, which ever you choose, I strongly believe its an unethical question to ask. When you place a job advert, of course, you will have considered the renumeration for the vacancy you placing. If so, what has what the person is earning in previous job got to do with what you already intend to pay. They wont pay one dime more or one dime less cos there is a standard measurement to salaries and standard companies don't rely on what you earn last cos every position has a grade level. Companies that ask such questions are usually one man business. Then when you know your onions, they will look for you and pay you accordingly.

Then if you are the type going about to beg for job or lobbying for post and really don't have anything to offer, they asking you how much you earn before whether they will want to match up or not.

Apart from that, if you like say 1million or 1naira, if they are interested, they will only pay what they can afford or they already advertised.

You are confused yourself! What is their business with his salary in his former place of work ?? Are they employing him based on his salary in former place or based on his competence and services he is going to offer them. why must we normalize abnormality in this country all because their are no jobs and people are left without options most of the times??

Nothing special with hiding your former pay when people are using same question to exaggerate figures. I know a colleague that earns less than 150k after task but at his new job he claimed his former salary was 250k and those people are paying him 300k with official car. Nobody has time to go verify what you were earning as long as you dey deliver your job well.

My worry here is that why do employers/HR ask this question, when they already know what they can afford to part with every month ??

Why not focus on the standard renumeration structure of the company in accordance with the role the employee is being interviewed for ??

I just feel that the ploy is to just short pay the person ... I mean , you have seen this person portfolio and can see his potentials ..

why not just tell him this is what the company is offering ..and he can decide whether it goes well with him or not ...
