AntiWailer: OP, I am happy to hear that you stood your ground. The question is actually illegal. Your current salary earning is confidential to you and your employer. The better question for the interviewer to ask is "What is your salary expectation", tht way you both can negotiate and make a compromise. To drive my point home, You can read up on this article. https://www./why-you-shouldnt-disclose-your-current-salary-when-looking-barker 1 Like |

Yustash001: It's over 3 years or more than I have not commented on actively on this forum but when I see clearly how a brother is missing out due to ignorance I am push in my spirit to help you. Next time try & be smarter, NEVER disclose your exact salary to any prospective employer but use words with range of value. "a little more than", "somewhere around", etc. Earning 10k, you can say that you are earning a little above......., or somewhere around......... Etc. |

It's normal to ask qstn abt your previous salary. You might even be required to present your pay slip for the past 3 to 6 months. 1 Like |

Personally I feel that question is very unethical and should be eradicated. It's like you (a recruiter/Hr) calling a cobbler ( job applicant ) to amend your shoes and instead of bargaining with him/her, you start asking how much he collected from a previous job, Considering the fact that there's always a 90% possibility you already have an idea of how much it will cost. Nobody goes to the market without having an idea of the cost of goods and services. Technically speaking, that's a fraudulent Question!!! I'll will always answer it's confidential too because actually, it is confidential. 2 Likes |

Most structured organizations I know of in Nigeria like to keep employee wages confidential, which is why when you are trying to apply for some jobs, you may only see probable figures online, and not exact salaries. So I wonder why such organization will expect you to disclose the wage structure of another organization. |

NwaAmaikpe: If there is one thing I like about you is saying things the way they are. @OP: It is important you divulge how much you earn esp at the final stage of an interview. It helps the company to know how much to pay you. It goes both ways because by knowing how much the firm offers you, you can negotiate it if it is low. You really goofed. At this point, the school will intentionally offer you a lower salary using whatever deduction theory and expect you to do your worse. |

Yustash001: What then happens if you are lucky to make it to the next stage and HR requests for your payslip? By now, I believe you should have a little insight into the organisation's policy and procedures for recruitment of new/experienced hires. I wish you the best of luck. |

Yustash001: Bra, I see a lot of folks here talking about what is confidential about your salary that you couldn't have disclosed. However, I stand by you as long as you didn't come off rude. While there is no problem with disclosing or not disclosing, which ever you choose, I strongly believe its an unethical question to ask. When you place a job advert, of course, you will have considered the renumeration for the vacancy you placing. If so, what has what the person is earning in previous job got to do with what you already intend to pay. They wont pay one dime more or one dime less cos there is a standard measurement to salaries and standard companies don't rely on what you earn last cos every position has a grade level. Companies that ask such questions are usually one man business. Then when you know your onions, they will look for you and pay you accordingly. Then if you are the type going about to beg for job or lobbying for post and really don't have anything to offer, they asking you how much you earn before whether they will want to match up or not. Apart from that, if you like say 1million or 1naira, if they are interested, they will only pay what they can afford or they already advertised. |

Truth is, from my experience as an interviewer I've got to discover that job seekers lie a lot about their earnings. That is why some organizations go to length of requesting for payslip or find out from previous employer depending on the position applied for. |

NwaAmaikpe: You are confused yourself! What is their business with his salary in his former place of work ?? Are they employing him based on his salary in former place or based on his competence and services he is going to offer them. why must we normalize abnormality in this country all because their are no jobs and people are left without options most of the times?? |

Nothing special with hiding your former pay when people are using same question to exaggerate figures. I know a colleague that earns less than 150k after task but at his new job he claimed his former salary was 250k and those people are paying him 300k with official car. Nobody has time to go verify what you were earning as long as you dey deliver your job well. 1 Like |

Why not focus on the standard renumeration structure of the company in accordance with the role the employee is being interviewed for ?? I just feel that the ploy is to just short pay the person ... I mean , you have seen this person portfolio and can see his potentials .. why not just tell him this is what the company is offering ..and he can decide whether it goes well with him or not ... |
