Tapout:Exactly. It's simply unethical, perhaps the company should also disclose how much the previous person in the position earned and why they left. In these companies, if employed, they ask you not to disclose your salary with colleague. Sort of corporate slavery 1 Like |

You may not be called by that employer same happened to me and that was how I lost the job because I said confidential crap. I still see one of the interviewer till today he looks at me with such a pity and inside him he would say pride in poverty. Shld incase you are not called back to resume with them. Never say confidential again. Get a job whether High or low income to be penniless is the worst. Okay. Then cultive savings culture too. Be discipline in your spending that can only be done if you are employed today. Or any time soon. But if you are some how tire of carry CV around learn a skill or learn a trade 1 Like 1 Share |

IN MY OPINION; you shouldnt have bluntly said what you said....many will see it as arrogance and someone that may not conform to authority if employed. next time be diplomatic.... when asked, start from 50 thousand or above depending on the organization you are applying too and the position, that way they will either tell you they can pay or they cant afford to pay. |

jospepper: You can easily modify that to the specific figure you earlier have them . They’re not going to call your company to confirm your pay either they just want to know how much are currently earning as a basis to present their own offer to you . You must be book smart and street smart 1 Like |

Well, I work for one of the Nigerian regulatory agencies and whenever anyone intend to cross to a private company within the industry, they will ask of your last salary and payslip. These are multi national private companies. All you need to do is to do the needful on your payslip and inflate the amount. hush15: 2 Likes 1 Share |

Many interesting positions here...but most of them just opinions based on personal experiences...which in itself is not bad. It is however rather sad and very limiting when you try to categorize a company based on questions asked at an interview. It is far from true that only small and unstable companies ask for your previous salary/pay slip. Even very large corporations ask this question depending on the circumstances of the interview. The bolded is very important. A number of reasons could necessitate this question and I will list a few here; Apparently, the most important reason this question comes up is usually because the company probably doesn't yet have a personnel emolument structure in place so they use your previous earnings to determine where to place you without underpaying you. Sometimes, a company already has an idea of what you are currently earning especially if you are in the same industry. You then come and lie and thus make a fool of yourself. This is considered an integrity issue and could cost you the opportunity. It is for this reason that you are asked to bring your payslip to back up your claim. Many large corporations who prefer to headhunt high and middle level management staff ask this question all the time. Typically, this question usually comes at the tail end when you have been narrowed down as the preferred candidate. Several years ago, I was interviewed for a position in one of the largest multinational conglomerates operating in Nigeria. One of the reasons I wasn't considered was because I hadn't previously earned close enough to what they had in mind. For them this meant that I wasn't as good as my interview process revealed. I am sure sometimes you see some vacancy ads stating clearly that interested applicants who had never earned a specific amount should not bother applying. Finally, one of the easiest ways to unveil dishonesty is especially among Nigerian applicants is to ask how much they earned last. Most candidates lie. It so for this reason that they are asked to present evidence of their claim. Recently I interviewed some candidates for a major food processing company. The interview held on different days. And we had 6 candidates applying for the same role (Quality Control) coming from the same company. 4 of them have very conflicting claims regarding their current earnings. The two ladies gave the same figures. When asked to back up their positions with payslips as evidence, the two ladies just forwarded their payslips right away from their email accounts. They were hired on the spot.....and for almost double of what they were earning. The other 4 (all males) asked for time and brought back badly cooked up payslips. You are not yet hired and you are already lying your head off. There is no big deal about revealing your current pay. All you need to do is decide what you will take and insist on what you consider is your worth taking into consideration the value you intend to bring to the table. There is no law preventing you from moving geometrically in your earnings. People can move from 100k to 3 Mill per month. I have seen that happen several times. Whatever you do, AVOID LIES whether it has to do with previous salaries, entitlements, responsibilities held and accomplishments. It could be your very undoing. Professional HR big wigs are usually smarter than you think. Best wishes. 1 Like |

Coolcalmcollect: Your status says it all. When u get a Job, come back for a discussion. I av told u, I dnt negotiate with Riff-raffs. It is only here a jobless person will guide another jobless person how to get a dream job. Ask your mates who have worked in Banks, Telecoms if they did not submit payslip to validate the salary they claimed to earn before they were given the new job offer. M0r0n claimed "Mushroom companies" yet u screamed at 7 digits monthly. |

This is not smartness but slavery and exploitation of a corrupt system. You have no right to ask how much I earned in the past. It is simply none of your business. Using that to determine honesty is also downright asinine. The Nigerian system is one in which I will never work again not in this lifetime. I took a couple of HR courses in my undergrad and trust me this are not part of the ethics to be employed when filling vacancies. Oktane: 1 Like |

realdickoflife: Entirely your opinion and that of your teachers. When you say the prospective employer has no right to ask you for your previous earnings, I wonder good arrived at that. They do have a right to ask you any question that will enable them objectively appraise your suitability for the role just as you reserve the right to deny them an honest response. This question has been asked not only in Nigeria but even by interviewers in very developed countries. Again, I maintain that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the question. You of course reserve the right to ignore the question or walk out of the interview. |

Interviewers in what country please? Developed? Please mention. I live and work in the US and trust me I know it is not lawful to ask those questions, rather they ask what are your salary expectations. Please do not spread falsehood. Oktane: 1 Like |

realdickoflife: To further educate us, you may wish to quote the relevant portions of the statutes that make the asking of this question relevant. Living and perhaps having worked in the US does not necessarily mean that this question has never been asked by any potential employer. You may be interested to know that the employer I am referring to has roots in the US and this interview took place right there. Another Swiss company with multinational operations has also used this tactic previously for a hiring process involving yours truly and other applicants of diverse nationalities. And this was in Geneva. I do not wish to argue about the proprietary or otherwise of this approach as I do not see anything legally wrong with the question. Again as stated previously the employer retains the privilege of asking you certain questions within the limit of the law while you reserve the unalienable right to ignore the question (and/or of course sue as Americans are often won't to do). Whichever option you choose will naturally be dependent on a lot of other variables. This will be my last post on this matter as there is no trophy in sight for either of us whichever way the cookie crumbles. Good day Sir. |
