OPERATION UNICORD
Part of nigeria civil war
Date july 2-12,1967
Location: northern biafra border
Result; nigeria victory
Belligerents; Nigeria and Biafra
Commanders; Nigeria( sule apollo and martin adamu). Biafra(H.M njoku).
Casualties: unknown on both sides .

The Operation UNICORD (July 2 – July 12, 1967) was an
offensive launched by the Nigerian Army at the beginning of
the Nigerian Civil War. It involved the capture of 6 major
Biafran towns near their northern border.
Background
When Nigeria became an independent state in October 1960
the newly formed government consisted mainly of northern
politician from the Hausa-Fulani ethnic group. Early on the
Nigerian government became corrupt with various
politicians swindling public funds and rigging votes. By 1965
the Nigerian government became so corrupt that uprisings
against the government sprang up all across Nigeria with
various politicians attempting to gain more power. This
resulted in rioting and mass arrests in the cities of Lagos and
Ibadan. The politician Obafemi Awolowo was falsely blamed
for causing the riots and was sentenced to 10 years in a
Nigerian prison. All of the chaos that occurred in the political
ralm gave was to the 1966 Nigerian coup d'etat in which 11
senior politicians were killed by mainly Igbo soldiers led by
the Army Major Chukwuma Nzeogwu. The Nigerian Prime
Minister Abubakar Balewa was one of the 11 politicians
assassinated during the coup of January 15. Nzeogwu's
soldiers were forced to retreat to Kaduna after General
Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi was able to assemble a force of
soldiers in Lagos to combat the rebellious soldiers. Ironsi
was made President of Nigeria on January 16, 1966 and
became the first Igbo president in Nigerian history. many
northern generals and politicians were angry at Ironsi for
two reasons, because he did not execute Major Nzeogwu
and because he was giving more and more political power
to southern politicians. On July 29, 1966 Ironsi was
assassinated by a mutinous soldiers under the command of
Lt Col Murtala Mohammed and installed Colonel Yakubu
Gowon as Head of State. The counter-coup resulted in the
1966 anti-Igbo pogrom and caused the brutal massacre of
50,000 Igbo civilians living in various northern cities such as
Kano and Kaduna. These massacres angered many Igbo
civilians and a call for secession was given by Colonel
Odumegwu Ojukwu. Ojukwu met with President Gowon in
Aburi, Ghana in December 1966 to discuss the situation that
was occurring in Nigeria. A vote was held in May 1967 in the
Eastern Region of Nigeria that was to see how many
easterners supported a secession. The vote resulted in 68%
of easterners approving of a secession of a secular Igbo
state. On May 30, 1967 Ojukwu officially seceded the Eastern
Region and proclaimed the new Republic of Biafra. Ojukwu
managed to assemble a 3,000 man guerrilla force to defend
Biafra's front lines. In early July 1967 Nigerian President
Gowon ordered General Olusegun Obasanjo to regain
control of the Eastern Region.
Battle
On July 2, 1967 the Nigerian Army opened its offensive
operations from the Northern sector. The First Area
Command NA, supported by an artillery brigade consisting
of scorpion tanks, saladin armored cars, and ferrets was
divided into two brigades. The 1st brigade under Maj. Sule
Apollo advanced down the Ogugu-Ogunga-Nsukka road
while the 2nd brigade under Maj. Martin Adamu advanced
down the Gakem-Obudu-Ogoja road. Defending Biafran
soldiers under Brig. H.M. Njoku managed to repel the attack,
however, the Nigerian Army began recruiting guides and
informants to report on the disposition of Biafran troops,
their strength, and other crucial information. For 10 days the
Nigerian Army fought its way southward and managed to
capture the towns of Nsukka, Ogugu, Ogunga, Ogoja, Gakem,
and Obudu while also forcing defending Biafran troops to
retreat in disarray. Many Biafran soldiers complained of
malaria, headache, and other ailments. Thousands of
Biafran civilians fled their homes, in fear of being massacred
by Nigerian soldiers, and headed for the Biafran capital,
Enugu.
Aftermath
16 days after the Biafrans retreated Nzeogwu attempted to
regain control of Nsukka on July 30 but was killed by
Nigerian soldiers while driving down a road. Obasanjo was
successful in his conquest of Nsukka but did not enter any
further into Biafran territory but instead was put aside after
the Biafran Generals Albert Okonkwo and Victor Banjo
invaded Nigeria's Mid-Western Region. Murtala Mohammed
was put in charge of fending off all Biafran soldiers within
Nigeria's boundaries. Victor Banjo got within 135 miles of
the Nigerian Capital Lagos before he was intercepted by
Mohammed's men. After over a month of bloody fighting the
Biafrans retreated to Onitsha and released their hold over
the Mid-Western Region. With the Midwest Invasion over the
Nigerians returned to Nsukka and began planning an
invasion of the Biafran Capital Enugu. Due to Nsukka's
proximity to Enugu it was a strategic stronghold. Olusegun
Obasanjo invaded the area around Enugu in mid September
1967. Obasanjo knew that Enugu would not fall easily if he
attacked it head on so he decided to surround the city and
begin a siege. On September 30 Obasanjo was able to break
through the Biafran defensive lines around Enugu and
entered the city. After 6 days of bloody fighting the Biafrans
fled south to Umuahia.

Below are some pictures from the civil war

Your story is meant for kids in the kindergarten to believe - story laced with too many lies against one section - east of Nigeria.

Nigeria civil war was fought like a Jihad. That’s why the huge number of casualties.

It was the greatest genocide in modern history after the Holocaust.

Premium Times newspaper first reported the soldiers from the 157 Battalion, including their commanding officer, were missing in action along with the tank, three artillery guns and eight trucks including one carrying 60,000 rounds of ammunition.

The military has reported that it destroyed dozens of Boko Haram camps and freed more than 1,000 kidnap victims in recent weeks. But Boko Haram has stepped up the tempo and range of its attacks, with raids and suicide bombings in the past week in Niger, Cameroon and northern Nigeria.

Early Sunday the extremists kidnapped dozens of girls and set ablaze hundreds of buildings in Bam in Borno state, said resident Mallam Ali.

The setbacks come as Nigeria’s government admitted it cannot crush by December the 6-year uprising that has killed some 20,000 people.

Troops kill Boko Haram Commanders in fresh ambush, confusion hits ISWAP camp

In a renewed counter-insurgency operation, Nigerian troops in collaboration with the Multi-National Joint Task Force have eliminated top Boko Haram Commanders on Friday in strategic ambushes.

A military intelligence source told PRNigeria that troops eliminated two terrorists’ Commanders: Alai Bor and Maleum Modu, and other Boko Haram fighters in different locations in Borno State.

Meanwhile, in another development, there is a confusion in Shura (consultation) Council of the Islamic State of West Africa Province over the appointment of one Abu Dawud as its new leader.

This is coming after some militant forces in what appeared as a “coup d’etat” overthrew Amir Abbah-Gana at Tumbum Kayowa.

The source said: “Nigerian troops with the support of MNJTF eliminated Alai Bor, a leader of Boko Haram in Buwari village in Bama, while attempting to cross Gwoza-Pulka Highway with six other terrorists in his entourage.

“The other terrorists’ commander, Maleum Modu, and three Boko Haram fighters were gunned down by the Nigerian troops while the terrorists were conducting surveillance around Mafa axis.

“Items recovered from them included motorcycles and weapons.”

Abbah-Gana, PRNigeria learnt, was ousted following a mass protest against the lopsided appointment of one Aliyu Chakkar as the new “Governor of the Lake Chad”.

Chakkar replaced one Goni Maina, a former Commander.

It was further gathered that bloody gunfire between militants forces supporting the factional “Governors” led to the death of dozens of insurgents.

Before the appointment of Abu Dawud, one Amir Goni Mustapha was appointed as Acting Leader and Chief Imam of the ISWAP sect for three weeks, while awaiting the decision of the Shura Council.

The reason for the dissolution, according to the Shura Council, include, but not limited to the loss of territories as a result of the offensives launched by the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Chadian Army, Nigerienne forces and the regional MNJTF troops under Abbah-Gana’s watch.

PRNigeria also learnt that series of air raids and merciless operations by ground troops of the Nigerian military under Operation TURA TAKAIBANGO, a subsidiary operation in the North East, have eliminated many Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in the Lake Chad region, even as other dozen terrorists and their families have fled the region.

I've been saying so myself. He argued with me. When NA starts treating ESN like a terrorist organization, they would start crying foul. The annoying thing is that the harmless citizens would also suffer for the foolishness of some misguided youths.

I've always said it, if Nnamdi KANU is a true leader, why isn't he leading on the front lines? why the hide and seek? Are any of his family members in ESN?

But some chestbeaters are here urging them on.

Buratai: The Exit Of The Warrior Of Peace. By Best Agbese

At last, President Muhammadu Buhari brought down the gavel, and with it he announced the change of Service Chiefs and immediately appointed their replacements. The erstwhile Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and honcho of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai also gracefully bowed out of office after decades of meritorious service to his fatherland.

For Gen. Buratai the news came to him in the same manner his appointment was also announced. He waited for this day and he knew from the outset that there would come a day, he must retire from active service to Nigeria. He gave his best; his very best to salvage his country from insecurities. No doubt, as Nigeria’s numero uno soldier, he has also bequeathed to Nigeria, a Nigerian Army better than he met it in 2015.

The day, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai decided to pursue a military career, he had no premonition of rising from the scratch to attain the highest pinnacle of his professional career. But through the divine will of God Almighty, he reached the peak and history would also remember him as one of the longest serving COAS in recent times. It is a plus in itself!

Gen. Buratai, was appointed as Nigeria’s 25th Chief of Army Staff (COAS), by President Buhari on July 13th, 2015. His appointment could not have been timelier because it came at a time when the morale of the soldiers was at its lowest ebb. It was glaring that soldiers were completely downcast in fighting insecurities in Nigeria because of multiple physical and psychological inhibitions. However, Gen. Buratai changed the narrative very miraculously and within the shortest time.

Prior to his appointment as COAS, the Boko Haram insurgents gambled with the country’s troops; evident in soldiers withdrawing from the frontlines in the face of enemy adversaries for fear of their lives. An enfeebled Nigerian Army lost its officers and men in droves. Nigerian Army, hitherto regarded as the best in Africa, had become an object of ridicule and spoofs to even armies of other countries.

So, when Buratai mounted the saddle, it soothed and pleasured Nigerians. His track records of service loudly attested to his proficiency as a gifted combatant soldier, Military strategist and tactician. His appointment as the COAS brought renewed hopes of a better Nigeria Army. And true to expectations, the country’s Army under his leadership began its journey towards self-rediscovery. Gen. Buratai has lived every word of his promise of repositioning, innovating and reforming this revered institution.

As an obedient and dedicated officer, Gen. Buratai was quick to enforce the instructions of his Commander- in -Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, President Buhari. First, it was to relocate the military command centre from Abuja to Maiduguri, the epicenter of insurgency in the Northeast region. The action migrated the anti-insurgency war to the door steps of the Boko Haram devils.

As an exemplary leader, Gen. Buratai also compelled other senior Army officers to hop into the trenches with him at the warfront of the troubled Northeast. His actions advertised it as compulsory and no one had to be prodded because Gen. Buratai led by example.

Thus, for the first time, Nigeria had a COAS who personally shadowed in the battlefield alongside with his troops. He coordinated series of attacks on terrorists. He featured in the squad of troops who launched massive attacks on Sambisa forest’s Camp Zairo which either naturalized or dislodged insurgents. With the demystification of the dreaded forest, members of the sect were decimated, and only able to launch minimal and intermittent cowardly attacks on soft targets. Gen. Buratai broke the jinx of Sambisa forest.

Gen. Buratai has finally exited the stage, but he has left behind lasting legacies in the Nigerian Army. The Nigerian Army under his reign has been repositioned into a professionally competent fighting force. Soldiers under his leadership have shown outstanding commitment to the preservation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Nigeria. The Army’s constant interventions in Internal Security (IS) operations in the country are landmark relics for Nigerians.

Until January 26th, 2021, the Nigerian Army under Buratai’s guidance had conducted over 40 special internal operations and exercises, as response to particular security challenges across the country. And these operations have been hugely successful. The Exercises/Operations such as Operation Lafiya Dole, Operation Python Dance, Operation Sahel Sanity, Operation Last Hold and so forth,

launched to tackle Boko Haram, armed banditry, kidnapping and other criminal gangs in the country have deposited ineffaceable footprints in Nigeria’s security history.

Under Gen. Buratai’s leadership, the welfare of the officers and men of the Nigerian Army was a major priority. He was aware of the fact that for his troops to have the right frame of mind in their line of duty, welfare must be prioritized. And so, he upgraded and regularly paid the salaries, allowances and bonuses of soldiers.

Adequate accommodations, both office and residential were also provided for the officers and men of the Nigerian Army. Old and dilapidated Army Barracks were renovated and new ones built. New Army Divisions and countless Forward Operation Bases (FOBs) have been established throughout Nigeria to bring military policing nearer to the people.

The amiable Army General also ensured that troops got their kits as at when due. He was famed for going at any length to ensure the needs of his troops were met at every point in time. Mr. President would hardly rest, if he is yet to approve the request Gen. Buratai forwards to him for soldiers. Mr. President loved it.

On assumption of office, Gen. Buratai, promised the officers and soldiers to prioritize their welfare. He had covenanted; “I want to reassure you that troops’ welfare will continue to receive my utmost attention. Every step is being taken to ensure that you get the best in terms of uniforms, boots and equipment as well as medical care among others…President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged his total support to our armed forces in its current campaign to restore the territorial integrity of our dear nation.”

To Buratai’s relentless struggles, soldiers under his watch have had every reason to smile in comfort and, stabilized emotionally and psychologically. And unlike in the recent past, priority was also given to the purchase or provision of equipment used by the military to combat insurgency. There innovation was reactivated in the Nigerian Army. The Army under him devised ways of arming, equipping and kitting Army personnel. It explored the sophistry of local technologies to make battles in the trenches a seamless exercise for the troops.

Nigerians would remember Gen. Buratai’s tenure as a period the Nigerian Army started the production of small and light arms and other combat artilleries that turned out to be effective in the war against terrorism. He adopted home-grown solutions, using local contents in manufacturing weapons for counter-insurgency. MRAP stands out distinctively.

The Nigerian Army Vehicle Manufacturing Company (NAVMC) which was established in 2019, under Gen. Buratai’s leadership was the first of its kind in the history of the country. Before his tenure, there was never any serious effort at producing military equipment locally by the Nigerian Army. He revived the moribund Army institutions and brought them back to ultimate productivity.

The feat has now set-in motion the Nigerian Army’s irrevocable march towards self-reliance in the production and maintenance of Armored Fighting Vehicles and other classes of military vehicles. It’s a shiny relic of his tenure because over the years, the Nigerian Army had relied on the importation of all its weaponry needs.

Equally of note is the establishment of the Human Rights Desk in the Army Headquarters (AHQs), which is replicated in all Army Divisions. It is targeted at resolving unforeseen incidents of alleged human rights violations of Nigerians in the course of special assignments by soldiers.

Gen. Buratai also implemented the Army’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project for the first time. Through it, host communities benefitted from community-based projects in water, electricity, healthcare, and roads construction among others. All these will always invoke fond memories of Gen. Buratai’s regime of the Nigerian Army.

As Gen. Buratai gracefully bows out of active service, he will be remembered as a reputable military expert, strategist, tactician, military historian, a philosopher, an administrator, a development expert, an iconic personality and a perceptive management expert. He was also able to inculcate the spirit of patriotism, excellence, selfless devotion to fatherland, courage, doggedness, the willingness to take action, enhanced performance and inimitable commitment to nationhood which were lacking in the Nigerian Army when he ascended the throne.

As someone who always thinks outside of the box to find remedies for the security challenges facing the country, Gen. Buratai, was able to build synergies and brainstormed with other Army chiefs around the globe in exchange of ideas on tackling terrorism. He was a global Army General and the people’s hero in Nigeria. It has not escaped the eyes that Gen. Buratai personified peace, humanity and development.

Now that Gen. Buratai has taken a bow, one thing is sure; he left the Nigerian Army and security of the country far better than where he met it. He has bowed out without any Nigerian territory still under the control of the Boko Haramists. It is also important to state here that during his time, the Boko Haram insurgents lacked the capacity to carry out attacks in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory as well as other core Northern states as previously obtained in 2015.

Indeed, Nigeria is safer today because of the unique leadership style, loyal and selfless service provided by the out-gone Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Buratai. These and many more are the reasons Gen. Buratai will forever have his name ingrained in gold in the Hall of Fame.

ecomog1990:
Guys welldone to you all, its good you all spoke your mind.

I don't want to be biased with my views.

I wish to say these anyway:

CDS is administrative DHQ role in Nigerian constitution, although he is not ceremonial, he is operational, but he has no direct field command of fighting regiments, he coordinates top brass in joint tri-service matters. So I won't say much, of DHQ tri-service head, because the blame for each force is with it's force chief of staff.

For those wanting Irahbor or Adeosun for Army Chief, remember that President Buhari speaks, hears, understands, even dreams better in local Hausa language, he needs a native Hausa speaker for that very important role so he can have perfect communication and heart to heart trust & faith.

1. Outgoing CNS tried, he fought maritime piracy with available sea vessels and few air assets. He ensured much peace in Niger Delta in his term.

His request for long range & high endurance helicopters and MALE UAV squadrons were not fully funded by FG, he got only few platforms not the squadrons he wanted.

He demanded return of navy to green water military maritime combat force above brown water coast guard current navy status.

He diligently sat down, wrote, submitted, and publicly published in newspapers a complete navy modernization plan given to FGN including China made guided missile fast attack craft, guided missile multirole frigates, diesel attack submarines.

All his demands were refused by FG. He worked with the little he had.

He did well by improving local naval ship building industry and maintenance dockyard.

2. Outgoing CAS was fantastic for NAF, but also lucky he got billions of dollars from FGN for new aircraft, while navy chief was denied.

Presidency needed new air power to fight N.E. war and spreading insecurity nationwide.

Yet he deserves credit for his wise spending because another person could get same big funds and spend it foolishly.

He also did well increasing local production of some basic fleet needs by AFIT and ensured very good aircraft maintenance depot works for fleet platforms availability.

3. Outgoing COAS initially started well with the Army boosting troops fighting morale and operational discipline on the frontlines.

He did well with local manufacturing as in defunct NAVMC making armoured vehicles, especially Ezugwu MRAP and Presidency quickly took it over before Army can mess it up like Igirigi APC, by giving all to DICON ownership.

He made wrong claims that Ezugwu is 80% local input, when we import vehicle chassis, engine, transmission, battery, tyres, steel for body, glass, TV camera, PTZ night vision, DShk HMG and ammo. So what did he falsely announce as 80% local content? He exaggerated to make himself look like doing miracles.

As COAS he wrongly declared technical defeat of BHT that only retreated from Sambisa to other hide-outs including cross border.

He misjudged retreat for defeat due to lack of quality military thinking.

He was comfortable in 2015 with cold war era Army tanks for our struggling armoured corps soldiers crying tears from Metele to Baga begging him for modern AFV but he turned blind eyes to it until when calls came for his sack, he rushed to buy a few dozen VT4 & ST1 in 2019.

First awoof $200 million FG gave him to boost army when PMB became President was enough to join with capital budget allocation to acquire 100 new VT4 MBT in 2016 and revive the dying NA armoured corps to make sure ISWAP dies quickly and BHT never regroups to give us double trouble.

He failed to give Nigerian Army the desperately needed capability gap solution with a proper IFV fleet for mechanized regiments.

He failed to modernize NA, a few dozen VT4, ST1, SH5 in 2019 is not army modernization for a large army of 200 battalions.

He could not sit down diligently to draft a full equipment modernization plan corps-wide, a most important thing Nigerian Army needs since 1990.

He got billions of dollars like NAF and spent foolishly with halfway equipping of only infantry corps, he abandoned all other corps until the few VT4 SH5 ST1 procurement of just $150 million.

How he spent army's billions of dollars funds, nobody can explain.

He also failed to draw a complete training & doctrine modernization plan, he left TRADOC decayed with WW II outdated course material syllabus in army corps schools, something NA needs since 1960s. Reason NA remains poorly trained with half-illiterate NCO cadre, privates lack smart fieldcraft, officers get overrun in bases, generals get outflanked in battlefields.

He failed to build a Nigerian Army that is detterrent to enemies, even Chad remained the preferred saviour in West & Central Africa. He could not draw strategic plans for a wide gap like NAF CAS did with Chad. The COAS allowed Chad's Army remain close rival to Nigerian Army.

Many Nigerian communities in North East prefer to be protected by Chadian soldiers than our own family Nigerian troops. Shameful status he permitted.

He allowed ISWAP grow more powerful than BHT. He had no solution to illiterate ISWAP warfare with his Master of Philosophy Degree near PhD education.

He ran out of all ideas to end our painful 10 years suffering North East insurgency and was calling for Spiritual Warfare to end this war, he made his Bangladesh Army Institution training show as one of his main weaknesses. He retreated NA into Super Camps and lied to the whole nation that it was a new winning strategy to end the insurgency, when actually it means forever endless war.

He naturally lacks dynamic creative problem solving ability and ingenuity.

He may be better than those before him, he may be doing Police work with Army duties nationwide, but he was ready to keep doing push me I push you with Borno Insurgents for the next 30 years while war destroyed our local economy and national economy.

He failed to sit down, draft a comprehensive war plan to defeat Jihadi Insurgency, and a comprehensive defense plan for the weak NE & NW axis of Nigeria from Kebbi to Adamawa borderline to give Nigeria a strong bulwark against regular invasion by bandits, killer herdsmen, jihadi terrorists.

In 2016 Buratai announced the technical defeat of Boko Haram.

In 2021 Boko Haram announced the technical defeat of Buratai with his 'forced' resignation from Chief of Army Staff position by popular demand of frustrated Nigerians.

Like someone already said, the same people hailing armed civilian to fight the military will also be the one to shout war crime when the party starts.

Am very sure north easterner will be willing to pay any amount for peace to reign in their region by now.
I won't be surprised if they actually kept silence or even cheers the militant up when the youth were picking up arms that year.
When the Insurgency started the Kanuri's where very okay with it. As most of the attacks then in Maiduguri had a high target on Christians.

Infact some Kanuri businessmen were paying Bokoharam to execute some Christians especially Igbo business men. Most Igbo businessmen sold off their houses at below 25% the cost price.

Infact there is a place in Monday Market Called Baban Line where they sell electronics. Previously before Insurgency you can't see a Kanuri owning a shop there. They sponsored the BH guys to attack most businessmen on that line . Now that line is completely owned by Kanuri businessmen.

The Igbos selling vehicle spare parts refused to leave they took up light arms and protected their shops grin

Never start what you can't finish. Now Borno state is a mess

Giwa barracks was attacked March 2014 and it’s detention facility was breached and prisoners held were freed.
