Today, I travelled from Nigeria to Dubai on Emirates. However, what happened at our international airport in Lagos can only be called a national insult! After fulfilling all requirements and having a valid negative COVID-19 test from a Nigerian hospital, the Dubai government released new regulations insisting all travellers from Nigeria must take another COVID-19 test on Nigerian soil – which they were in charge of – before we would be allowed to fly. To add further insult to injury, they contracted individuals from the Kenyan government to conduct the test, which was charged at an equal amount to the test already done in Nigeria!

In other words, what they are doing effectively makes the initial Nigerian test invalid and questions the integrity of Nigeria’s government and medical system. They are rudely reckoning that all the tests conducted within Nigeria are fake and should be discarded. What an insult! I am not saying the UAE government should not facilitate another test for COVID-19 if they insist – but why not do it when passengers arrive in Dubai? Why are you doing it in the soil of Nigeria? Is that not an insult? If there are some test results that are discovered to be fake, then take appropriate actions against the perpetrators. But to conclude that all tests originating in Nigeria are counterfeit is simply offensive. The Nigerian government should do something about this before it’s too late. This is sadly another example of ‘colonialism’ – the Dubai government entering inside Nigeria’s airport (without any official permit) and making it mandatory for our citizens to do another test before flying.

They additionally announced that no airline can carry passengers from Nigeria to Dubai if the journey is not a direct flight, effectively ruling out all carriers except Emirates. Now, I understand that tourism is Dubai’s number one source of revenue and they stand to gain a lot from the popular Nigeria-Dubai route – but why then do they also insist on enforcing a second COVID-19 test in Nigeria’s airport? Will it be written that this test was conducted on the soil of Nigeria by the government of Dubai? Why is it only the nation of Nigeria where this is being enforced? Well, if Dubai’s government insist on such draconian measures, this is the time to protest! If no Nigerian visits Dubai for one single month, I am convinced their tune would quickly change, they would do the right thing and this offensive new law would be brought to a swift end!

Why the outrage when we all know what's up? The harsh truth is that every document generated in Nigeria is a potential fake. This is the view of all foreign entities that deal with Nigeria. They ask us to authenticate our educational certificates and other documents. They are suspicious of visa stamps on our passports. When we greet them good morning, they look out the window to verify that its actually morning and not night. They have probably heard that you can sit in your living room in Zimbabwe and order a negative covid 19 result from Nigeria without ever doing the test. They will not be the first to take such extreme measures. The US embassy has long ago stopped bothering with Nigerian documents. Anyway, bottom line is that its their country. They can request any measure for people to enter.

Why won't they insult Nigeria when Dubai was a desert in the 1980s and early 1990s but today, it is a top developed destination and all celebrities, politicians, citizens now holiday, do business and invest in Dubai

Nigeria was better off than UAE in the 1980s but they have overtaken us by light years.

Nigeria has no good reputation anywhere in the world. I don't think it is an insult they are just doing the right thing.

ensive new law would be brought to a swift end!

Some Nigerians and their nauseating braggadocio, one would be forced to think Nigeria has a trillion dollars GDP and GDP per capita of $40K+. dUbAi iS iNsUlTiNg nIgErIaNs! When there were news of fake Covid-19 results from federal clinics, what did you say? When there were incidents of people travelling after obtaining altered results from hospitals in Nigeria for as low as 25K, what did you say? Then, why should the UAE, a major travel spot for Nigerians allow such people unhindered access? How much do Nigerians even contribute the to UAE sef that you are shouting?

If you had an event centre which is currently open to the public of which the entrants must present a Covid-19 test result prior to entry, you later discover that a particular set of people are presenting altered results, what will you do to safeguard your workers and centre's reputation? You mentioned offering tests upon landing in Dubai, fine. Unfortunately, because Nigerians are poor people whose contributions are negligible compared to Europeans or Indians, she can decide to impose her own rules even to the extent of employing other Africans to test Nigerians (before you begin to chant eMiRaTiS aRe rAcIsTs). At the bold, the UAE cannot be responsible for Nigeria's irresponsibility. Are you responsible for your neighbour's irresponsibility in ensuring his children obey him? Why should it be different with the UAE? Hold Abuja not Abu Dhabi responsible. You have two options: do not travel to the UAE or obey her rules. You cannot dictate to another country let alone a richer one as a citizen from the country with the highest number of people what to do. It is not done anywhere.

In summary, Nigerians - same folks who went to the UAE on day one only to break into a gold store on day three - are inherently dishonest and nefarious set of people. Why is she not doing same to Kenyans? Ghanaians? South Africans?

Exactly my point - there are SOME bad eggs in Nigeria, just as there are in every country worldwide. But Dubai's actions have bigotedly characterised all of us under that umbrella. And our tacit acceptance of this label is only making matters worse. The narrative must change!

Well, to you it's bigotry but to UAE authorities, they're protecting against the spread of Covid-19 in the country. Your complaints should be addressed to Abuja to discipline erring individuals who abet and obtain fake Covid-19 results. Again, it's not the UAE's responsibility to cater for Nigeria's irresponsibility.

Please Can the test be done at the airport when I am about to travel to Dubai or it has to be done 72 hours and can you suggest a reputable hospital in Lagos where I can do it.

Don't you get it ? Your Nigeria test is useless to Emirates meaning no matter where you get your test you will still have to get a 4hrs rapid covid test in the airport for 37k before your departure

I beg to differ, instead I will accept Nigerians are insulting Nigeria.

It's a test for Christ sake, carry out a test, to see if you are eligible to fly. Why do you have to boycott that?

Una never receive insults, very soon other countries go join even Ghana go hire Niger Republic to scan Nigerians before entry.

This county is a shit hole
Re: Dubai’s National Insult To Nigeria! by Nobody: 7:01pm On Feb 04, 2021
It's not an insult to Nigerian government because our government has no respect for themselves. They are crooks, they don't respect Nigerian law themselves.
Remember at the innitial break of COVID. There was a law for everyone coming into Nigeria to be tested before they are allowed to leave the airport. Our politicians refused to be tested, they don't believe the law is for them and their families. They are too big to respect the law. They are big men. Thereby they brought in the virus in large quantity. If you remember the first people who got the virus were the politicians and their families.

Now, you think all those were not seen or read by the international press?. They don't trust our government talkless we the citizens and you don't say it's their fault.

Though it's not right to allow Kenyans to be the ones conducting the test. But you and I know everything in Naija is man knows man. If you meet your friend or cousin who is a doctor at the counter, he might just exempt you from the test and give you a certificate that you are virus free without the test. Naija has no record of integrity almost everyone is corrupt.

It's not Dubai's fault.

25k is not cheap to tell u the truth, it is even expensive. The UAE we r talking about has made this thing free for their people and anyone with valid UAE I.D and also, free for all traveller's entering their country and if u have to pay its just dhs85 which is less than 10k.

What has the Nigerian Government put in place with all the lockdown and preparation of last year before the re-opening of the airport. Not even a testing center at the airport, too many things to talk about but, we need to put things right. Truth be told, with all the money that was received last year for covid-19 relief they could not put any visible structure on ground, only markings on the floor that is not even followed and making sure people pay 50k for both returning and outbound passengers.

What a pity to us as a people!
