I can tell you neither watched the movie nor read the book.

Take it from someone who watched the series AND read the entire book "Roots" by Alex Haley, most African slaves taken to America DIED.

A lot died of disease in the holds of the ship's where they were arranged like yams and chained to the planks they laid on, urinating, defeacating and vomiting all over themselves and each other.

Those that eventually made it died in the very first winter they would encounter. Most blacks in the US today were born as a result of breeding by white farmers who bought girls and had guys rape them till they got pregnant, having babies that grew up used to the degradation and harsh life in bondage.

If they caught your great-grandfather, it's no guarantee of anything. Maybe you wouldn't even exist.
