Why should I check my VIN

If you're interested in buying a used car, you can do a VIN lookup to get the vehicle history report and find records of accidents, and repairs. ... Finally, law enforcement agencies do a VIN check to identify vehicles that have been stolen.

The car's vehicle identification number (VIN) is the identifying code for a SPECIFIC automobile. The VIN serves as the car's fingerprint, as no two vehicles in operation have the same VIN. A VIN is composed of 17 characters (digits and capital letters) that act as a unique identifier for the vehicle. A VIN displays the car's unique features, specifications, and manufacturer. The VIN can be used to track recalls, registrations, warranty claims, thefts, and insurance coverage.

Below Are Some Written Key Reasons Based On Experience

Nigeria is a great country with the good and the bad side when it comes to cars.

It's not new that cars with damaged history or flooded history are being sold daily in Nigeria. This is why every potential car owner must check a Car Vin to be sure of what he/she is buying. Current car owners can also check their VIN, if their car is giving them problem their mechanic can't diagnose.

#1 Nigerian Car Dealers Daily Buy Flooded & Accidented Cars And Ship Them Into Nigeria

This is normal with shady car dealers in Nigeria, how would one avoid this tendency? By doing a ViNcheck! A VIN check reveals if the car has been in an accident or flooded. Cars are daily bought without proper VIN checks daily. Accident and flooded cars are cheap to buy abroad, which is why car dealers go for it.
A normal 2003-2006 accidented corolla can be bought for $1000-$2500 and resold in Nigeria for 1.8m-2m. The problem is that most of these cars are badly accidented and tends to give you faults and its normal. Based on my experience as a ViNcheck inspector, I have seen a lot of cars ranging from old models and new models that have been refurbished and put into the market. (There's really no problem in importing and reselling a car that has minimum damage, but it is bad when you import a car that has substantial damage all because of the sale margin)

#2 ViNcheck Exposes The Real Model Year

This may not be famous as it seems, but it's rampant! I have had several experiences on this part, I had this client that was looking for a good Registered 2008 Rav4 to buy for his wife, this was like April 2019. I contacted this dealer, who was obviously a Car45 rep. He sent me pictures of a supposed 2008 Rav4, I vividly told him that I want a 2008 model, he said it was 2008, finally i requested for the VIN and found out that my nigga was lying, it was actually a 2006 model! I confronted him he was weak and couldn't say anything valid. Note: i was about to send my client down!
Another scenario happened when a client of mine was intending to check a VIN, his mind was poised at 2009 model car! This happened this past week. Everything checked out well, no accidented or faulty records. Lo and behold, it was a 2007 model! He told me that the dealer told him that it was a 2009 model. People buy cars daily and get cheated due to lack of proper investigation.

#3 A Vin Exposes Real Odometer!

It's very common for dubious car dealers in Nigeria to decrease the mileage reading, it's not news. Due to this bad character, car owners have changed their engine 6 months after buying as tokunbo. High mileage is very common with old model cars ranging from 1998-2010. These sets of cars have been driven thoroughly by many owners! They have gotten tired of it and decided to sell it as junk!
A mileage of 150k miles and below is a good odometer to begin with. Most cases people fail to do a Vincheck to check on the mileage.(most cases when doing a Vincheck, mileage are not seen, you would have to depend on your mechanic to confirm the condition of the engine.

#4 To Avoid Flooded Cars

A flood-damaged car will more than likely smell musty or moldy. As water seeps into a vehicle, it will start to produce a stale odor that is difficult to remove. However, if it smells like powerful cleaning agents, that could also be a red flag that the seller is trying to cover something up.
Car flood damage symptoms not only include a musty odor and damp carpets, but water damage also negatively affects engine components. With any potential vehicle purchase, you want to take a look under the hood to see what you’re working with. A water-damaged engine can make the transmission fluid murky and dilute the engine oil. Test driving the car is important so you can listen for any strange noises coming from under the hood. Modern-day vehicles with their complex computers contain even more electrical parts than ever before. That being said, water and electronics don’t mix very well. Flood-damaged cars can have a whole slew of both mechanical and electrical problems.
One prominent indicator of a flood-damaged vehicle is rust and corrosion. Check underneath the seats for any rusty metal, as well as the undercarriage of the vehicle. Also make sure to inspect the door hinges, any metal hardware, and even the doors themselves. Corrosion is an issue that will continue long after the flood waters have receded, so it is an important step to take when looking for the signs of a flood-damaged car. Cars with flooded history are daily sold in Nigeria.

These are just some importance and reasons to check your VIN, you can drop yours
