Dear Nairalanders,

I will appreciate your advice, location and tips on buying a generating set. I was told diesel type is the best and rugged though some claim petrol type is also good. How do i know im buying original and how do i test the real capacity when buying. I want a set that could take my two 1.5HP AC and my deep freezer simultanously. Any brandname or dealer in mind. Thanks for your help

hi there, there are a varying ranges of gen sets u can choose for. I do know a litlle about diesel generating sets, Can't say what advantages it those have over the gasoline types though. But for a 1.5hp and a deepfreezer, I'd suggest you go for an 18KVA Diesel Generating set. This can come locally assembled, as obtained from Mikano Generators ( a dealer in the country), or U.K assembled. My Firm (Marapco Generators) brings in gen sets from F.G Wilson factory in the U.K, and so does John Holt Plc. Some other firms you might want to look into, that stock gensets, include JMG generators. They stock foreign gensets and do a bit of local soundproofing as well.

I did forget to mention that diesel gensets can come in open form and in the soundproof version as well. For starters, I hope this helps. Visit Afrimed Nigeria Ltd, @ 1B Suez Crescent, Ibrahim Abacha Estate, Wuse 2. In the interim, leave me an email address and I can send you brochures that would aid your decision making and familiarise you with the technical details of the accompanying gen set models.

Sexyme,

Please I need your advise and assistance too, I want a soundproof Genset that can carry two (1hr Power) split air conditioners, a fridge and a deep freezer.

I too have heard that petrol burns faster than diesel and also that the Diesel Gen is much more rugged & durable.

Shows that u really dunno much bout generators. Using a massive 18kva to power just one 1.5hp a/c and a deep freezer DAMN

Listen, for a 1.5hp a/c, that'll require about 6 - 7.5 amps to power. Basically, all u need is a 7.5kva petrol engine.

Lemme giv u the stats: an 18kva can power three 2hp A/Cs with three 1.5hp A/Cs!!!! (but after that jus forget about puttin on litebulbs grin grin)

How about a gen for 1hp AC and a fridge. will I also require a 7.5KVA?

Yeah, a 1hp will require about 5amps to power so the 7.5kva will suffice!! wink

How much does a 7.5 Kva goes for?
Is there an alternative for solar system in the house just for lesspowered appliances?
Re: I Need Advice On Buying A Generator by Nobody: 8:15pm On Mar 23, 2007
@ abstarr , i did mention i wasn't sum technical expert, which is why i did offer to have catalogues sent to him.ok?

7.5KVA just might do, goin by the last post.About pricing, can't say as we don't stock sizes that small. Might check on the other firms I made mention for. Be mindful though about engine makes - most ideal would be a Perkins Engine, Lister or Cummins. I'd advocate for the Perkins though as its more durable and spare parts, readily available. With the Perkins engine, as with most other products, the 'China' version exists and that's inferior, so take that into cognisance before you start with the pricing. They of course come much more cheaper than the U.K stock.

Well, I would like to purchase a 40 KVA Perkins genset (UK version with original soundproof) for a cyber cafe business in Nigeria. Please what's the cost at your end? I would also Like to know the price of China version.

Thanks in advance.

Go for a authentic Honda generator from a certified Honda dealer.
Mine has been serving me well for three years plus now and i think so far so good,i have serviced ( changing of oil and total clean up ) it four or five times.

Honda generators are rugged and FUEL SAVERS too.

Good luck.

abstarr, did you really read the initial post? Poster has TWO 1.5HP and a freezer, so if we use your calculation of 7.5Kva for one 1.5HP AC thats 15Kva  for two, Yes?

That case sexyme's initial estimate of 18Kva was not off as you need to now add freezer etc to whats left 3Kva.

sexyme, dem dey easily challo you o! grin

1HP = 750W

1.5HP = 1050W = about 1250VA (taking into consideration power factor)

2HP = 1500W = about 1800VA (taking into consideration power factor)

So, 2 nos 2HP A/Cs will be 3600VA (or 3.6kva)

Freezer shouldn't be more than 300W.

Total 3900VA

Making room for the starting power which is usually higher than the regular operating power we must size the generator to accomodate this short surges.

7.5kva generator can and will power 2 nos 2HP A/Cs plus 1 freezer without wahala.

For inverter systems, it would be safe to use 10kva inverter because the tolerance level is very low as alternative energy is really unforgiving for things like these.

While the cost of generators may appear small the real issue is with the fuel or diesel not to talk about the servicing and convenience.

I bought a generator for less than N15,000.00 and in one year I spent nothing less than N100,000.00 because I must use electricity in my office and yet during the day power is usually off only for them to make power available during the evenings and nights.

I sought for and investigated inverters, built one and for over 2 years I have never used a generator in my office yet I have never run out of power supply. Total cost then was less than N60,000.00 (inverter plus 1 no battery) even though after 18months I turned the battery bank into a 2 nos battery system.

If planned properly, an inverter and an appropriate battery bank would be a very good alternative to generators and unpredictable cost of fuel, diesel or servicing.

Afam, Can you pls explain to me what an inverter is, is it another type of generator or an energy storage system? I am interested in investigating inverters. Also what is the battery bank/system. Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Kindly do justice to this inverter stuff and let the house know its application/conversion and use in our various homes;may be the messiah from PHCN's embarassment finally heralds.
Re: I Need Advice On Buying A Generator by Seun(m): 7:48am On Mar 25, 2007
CeeCee technologies at Computer Village Ikeja specializes in inverters and other power systems. I bought a 1.5kva automatic inverter for less than 30,000 naira at the place. Just look for CeeCee when you get there.

The higher wattage inverters are outrageously expensive and you'll still need a generator to charge the batteries.
Re: I Need Advice On Buying A Generator by Afam(m): 8:35am On Mar 25, 2007
Inverters are not new anyway.

Many have used them before and quite a lot have had bad experiences which may have been caused by either of the following; end user abuse, low quality inverter, bad chargers that may have over charged or under charged the battery bank, unnecessarily high expectations based on service providers misinformation/lies.

An inverter basically converts the DC in a battery to usable AC. It means that the battery must be charged so most inverters come with an inbuilt charger that takes the regular AC from a wall outlet and charges the battery or battery bank (a battery bank is a number of batteries connected together in either series or parallel to deliver more power for any given backup scenario).

So, you can get an inverter that can power anything depending on your pocket. But how long the backup will last does not depend on the inverter but on the battery bank so it means you can design a backup system to last you for up to 6hrs, 24hrs or even 72hrs.

Hope the information above helps.

Yeah my bad, I actually didnt notice that there were two 1.5hp A/Cs, but with the massive factor of safety that i added in recommending the 7.5kva it would still accomodate the xtra A/C. As u can see from afam's calculation that, in earnest, these appliances dont actually require that much power. It's jus wise to project for future xpansion.

I'm sure sexyme understands that my joke was in good faith, no pun intended. wink

what are the spefications of ur generators
Re: I Need Advice On Buying A Generator by Nobody: 2:37pm On Mar 28, 2007
@T2
no point getting into an argument over the technical details of the genset, being that its an area i am not conversant with, which is why i let it ride. If anyone needs clarification on the right specification for his/her need, i'll b glad to provide brochures.

@ Bulga
a 40KVA Soundproof - UK version (XP40 P1, as we call it) would cost about N2.32m. Of course the price is open to negotiations and I can guarantee further discount or a first free service upon a commitment to purchase. No idea about the China version and its attendant prices. Rather than opt for that, I'd suggest you go for one that's locally assembled. They're equally as good, with a price difference owing to cost of labour and importation. Speaking matter of factly, the local soundproofing does more noise reduction than the U.K soundproof version, being that the latter combines its noise reduction with a weather proof advantage, which the former does not have. In terms of aesthetics however, the U.K version has an upper hand.

P40P1 - U.K Assembled, Open model : N1,500,000
XP40 P3 - U.K Assembled, Soundproof : N2,320,000 (as stated earlier)
P40 P1 LSP - U.K Assembled, Local Soundproofing: N1,850,000

@ TaxMan
the smallest genset size in stock is the 12.5 KVA. Goes for about a million naira - subject to negotiation as well.

Afam, hi. I just needed some clarifications on what you wrote on your site. You said you prefer the wet cell battery but yet again, a few lines up, you said the dry cell type is the best. Which exactly is best out of the 3 types and what advantage do I get if I buy the dry cell type over others?
Re: I Need Advice On Buying A Generator by adconline(m): 7:57am On Apr 05, 2007
I am awed by Sexyme and Afam's illustrations. Sexyme, you still insist on not being a technical expert even when most folks on this forum do not know what you are talking about.

@Battleaxe,

Wet cell types are cheaper, readily available and makes sense if money is an issue.

Dry cell types are the most expensive, very reliable and not what you see in most battery dealers shops.

If you can afford the dry cell type then go fo it, I had a client that choose to get dry cell and we got 6 nos @ N54,000.00 each.

But the wet cell cost between N19,000.00 to N26,000.00 each.

In terms of warranty, the dry cell is far far better but again it all boils down to cost.

Maybe I should have stated on the site that the advice on wet cell is purely due to the cost.

Thanks for your time.
