The car is Toyota sienna 2007. It was bought as Tokunbo barely 2 months ago but has not been used for once because of intractable overheating problem.

The car upon travelling a short distance will overheat and shut off. Sometimes it may start again after cooling down. Meanwhile, the temperature guage does not go up (we thought the guage was faulty initially and changed it).

We have virtually exhausted all options - changed top gasket, changed 2 top cylinders, replaced the radiator with a new one, replaced the water pump with a new one, bypass thermostat, replace fuel pump, etc.

The car is located in Enugu.

Please I need help from experts or contact of experienced technician on this problem in Enugu or south-east.

That is also part of the problem. I have changed mechanic twice, and both were on recommendations. I need contact of someone with special equipment and experience in solving overheating problems.

Can be sad when a car does this. I can feel your pain wallahi. I'd advice you take it to another state where reputable mechanic is located. Maybe tow it since it can't drive long distance.

I am just wondering the connection between fuel pump and overheating.

Because the car usually shuts off when it overheats, at some point, the mechanic taught it the fuel pump was bad and advised that we changed it.

I've been wondering is it not unusual for the car to shut off each time it overheats? And when it does, it can only start again if you allow it some time to cool off.

Is it that the overheating is so severe that it triggers the cars computer system to turn off the engine or that the engine has a major underlying fault?

Meanwhile, the cars engine is 2GR

Describe the overheating.

You said it doesn't show at the temp gauge so what else show's over heating.

Does coolant pour out during the overheating? From where? Does the radiator become empty? Is cooling fan auto or direct? Is fan turning right direction?

Eyah, I believe modern car are configured to shut down during overheating inorder to protect against major damages.
Nothing has to do with fuel pump.

Yes, coolant (actually ordinary water because it's a new radiator and I was told use of coolants will spoil the new radiator) pour out especially from the radiator reservoir.

An electrician has checked the fan and confirmed it's okay. The fan was recently connected directly in the course of finding solution to the overheating..

Have you checked the water pump? Radiator cap?
Also bypass the heater core, sometimes it gets blocked and doesn't allow water to pass.

We have actually changed the radiator radiator and water pump to brand new original ones (at least to the best of my knowledge). Except it is possible for the new radiator to come with a defective cap too.

As for the heater core, I don't know about that. I'll ask the mechanic.

I'll be glad to have the contact of any mechanic with good knowledge of addressing issues of overheating holistically in Enugu or Onitsha

Then your problem is a very simple N1000 solution.

The radiator cap is bad.

The coolant is not supposed to flow from the radiator to the reserve tank. The cap is supposed to make a good seal keeping the cooling system under pressure. Water expands when boiling, with a bad cap, this causes it to spill out till it runs dry. When it runs dry, that means there is no cooling.

Secondly, the reason you will not see it in the temp gauge is that the temp sensor is a contact sensor, it has to be in contact with the coolant to read but without coolant, you will not get the correct reading.

Lastly, don't buy a new cap, get a toks radiator cap. Yours should have a value, 0.9, 1.1 etc Get the same number.

Thank you so much for this advice. I'll get a toks radiator cap and fix.

But first, the mechanic says the top gasket is damaged already because of multiple episodes of overheating. So I've told him to get all that is required and fix a new top gasket.

Meanwhile, is it true that coolant is not compatible with new radiator? The new radiator, I was told, is the original and aluminium type. But the mechanic said pouring in coolant will spoil it (I usually use total coolant and I do not add ordinary water).

I really don't know about the coolant in new radiator problem.

Radiator is always aluminum.

Solve your cooling issues with water before thinking of coolant when it is stable

I also bought a new radiator last year, after installation, I was told not to add coolant but ordinary water because it will spoil the radiator, my brother I didn’t listen to them oo, I put coolant mixed with water 50/50. I prefer the radiator to spoil than running ordinary water in the engine because water has a boiling point.

Makes sense. When the storm is over, I'll also do 50/50. Thanks

I don't know about this new radiator thing, first time am hearing. I once used water on my car. if I stopped when engine is hot. the car will refused to start till the temperature gauge drops way below 90. This does not happen with coolant though. Car starts whenever even if am a bit above 90

Nigeria mechanics and their advice. I won't blame people who take their advice with a pinch of salt.

Meanwhile I hope your mechanic knows that after changing top gasket, you shouldn't put water immediately.
The engine should run for some minutes b4 adding water.

Yes no water in the radiator. This allows the top to bond well.

Na wa o. Coolant will spoil radiator.

My oga, go find beta mechanic, not all this ones you will be telling what to do. A bad radiator cap, leaking lines, clogged water jackets might be your problem. Sorry your mechanics are.

Wow... Starting an engine with dry radiator? Won't that fry the top and damage the water pump?

Please what do other experts in the house have to say about this?

I just discovered that the radiator fan has been connected directly while the thermostat has been removed. Do you think I should reverse these actions after the problem of overheating is solved?
