Dangote Refinery Can Bail Nigeria Out Of Economic Recession – IMF by Nemere2020: 9:59pm On Feb 10, 2021
The International Monetary Fund, IMF, the global financial watchdog, is projecting that Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery would provide an elixir for the country’s economy when it is completed and start production by 2022.

In its latest report on Nigeria’s economy, the Fund raised the hope that the start of production from the refinery, solely owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote could help Nigeria improve its Current Account balance.

It said Dangote Refinery has “the potential to catalyze more domestic crude oil production and boost GDP growth.”

“On the upside, the Dangote refinery, if commencing production in 2022 as planned, could meet the full demand for domestic consumption of refined petroleum products—which are almost all imported at present—thereby improving the CA balance.

“With crude oil for local refining not subject to the OPEC quota, the refinery also has the potential to catalyze more domestic crude oil production and boost GDP growth,” the IMF wrote in its Article IV report on Nigeria’s economy released on Monday.

Many experts have also projected that the refinery, which may cost Dangote about $15 billion to complete is capable of helping to save Nigeria huge foreign exchange in fuel importations.

The 650,000 capacity Dangote Refinery, is regarded as one of the world’s biggest oil refineries and could end the irony of Africa’s biggest oil producer importing estimated $7 billion of fuel yearly, and instead see it meeting its own needs and supplying neighboring nations.

Renaissance Capital in a report in 2018 projected that Dangote Refinery has the potential to revolutionize Nigeria’s economy, with its operations adding $13 billion, or 2.3 percent to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Dangote Refinery, which is described as Nigeria’s largest-ever industrial project, boasts of a distillation column for separating crude into various fuels at different temperatures that is the largest of its kind in the world.

The 650,000 barrel-per-day refinery is just part of a $15 billion petrochemical complex that will also house a gas processor and the world’s biggest plant for ammonia and urea, which is used in making plastics and fertilizer.

Already, the Fertiliser plants is said to be ready and could be commissioned any time to add to the agricultural revolution not only in Nigeria but in some parts of Africa to boost the continent’s economy.

The optimism by the global financial watchdog on the potential of Dangote refinery is a victory to the resilient of Africa’s richest man’s contributions to the economic emancipation of Nigeria and the continent at large.

Dangote’s initial plan to enter the refining business was frustrated by government policy flip-flops when in 2007 he bought one of the country’s refineries under the privatisation programme of the then President Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

However, the dream was short-lived as the entire process of privatization was swiftly reversed by the successive government that came after Obasanjo.

Today, Dangote’s quest to play in the oil refining business is gradually coming to pass with the impending completion of the plants in the Lekki export free trade zone and the accolade from the global financial watchdog.

Nigeria should stop relying on Petro dollar if she doesn't want to be going and coming out of recession everytime, there are so many areas /sectors in the economy that can generate enough foreign exchange for the country which the federal government is not exploring. Sectors like agriculture, tourism and mining can generate so much foreign exchange if adequately taken care off.

Most importantly the country should stop importing and start producing so that there won't be so much pressure on the naira.

We know already but will the current APC government under the leadership of Buhari allow that to happen? Your guess is as good as mine.

Not when you have an utterly confused president, whose patriotism and loyalty to the national cause is highly questionable... Your country is about commissioning the biggest refinery in the world, capable of meeting all her petroleum needs, but you are busy as the president, constructing a pipeline to your maternal home in Zinder via Marada-Niger republic, just to keep the refinery there busy and profitable for another country! The Americans and the Canadians share the same ancestry, but you won't see an American president implementing obnoxious policies that favour the Canadians more than the Americans... It's called the "defense of national interests"! People with such alarming levels of administrative confusion as the Daurra Disaster are not qualified to manage a pigsty, not talk of being the president of the country with the biggest population of black people on earth..

Yeah! We already know. That's why we gave him all the favourable concessions. So IMF, please don't make it sound like you are revealing something big to us.

This is what we get when we assume too much power and resources in one person. There are many human potentials that can resucitate the fortune of this country but no they won't give them chance. They would rather kill their ambition with tax and unfavorable environment just to dissuade them from good ideas. Dangote is not the only person in this country. Why giving him only attention when there are untapped or relegated human resources down south here.

You think the cabal in this present administration will allow the refinery to run.

It's already a year+ since it was supposed to start refining

The challenge with a monopolistic capitalist like Dangote in a poor country like Nigeria is that the country will be at his mercy when critical economic structures are under his umbrella. He technically becomes above the law in many regards knowing that a squabble or friction with Dangote will spell economic doom for the government of the day..in that regard, he enjoys special economic privileges among his contemporaries or within the business sphere. Typical example is Carlos slim of Mexico

On the other hand, in a rich countries like the US, UK etc....There’s an almost equal level playing ground and government subsidies cut across all players in the business sphere. Most importantly, the players are not above the law and could be summoned at any point they find deviation or sabotage to national interest like they summoned bill gate some years back, mark zuck recently and many more.

Nigerian youths are pushing Nigeria deeper into recession by storing money that should be circulating in the economy as virtual currencies somewhere in the internet instead of investing in the production process no matter how small.

When I now become a billionaire in future after making the right moves in the manufacturing industry they'll now shout "monopoly".

Manufacturers are still the richest people, anywhere in the world. To be regarded as a wealthy person, one must own the means of production . To help your economy, you must create wealth through production.

Jeff Bezos (Amazon) , Elon Musk (Tesla) , Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) etc though regarded as tech billionaires still produce goods or services which gives worth to their stocks depending on how they perform in the market.
