Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, says Lagos is the most fortunate Nigerian state governed by visonary men.

Since the return of democracy in 1999, Lagos has been governed by four men — Bola Tinubu, Babatunde Fashola, Akinwunmi Ambode, and incumbent governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Speaking at the closing session of the 2021 Lagos ‘Ehingbeti’ Economic Summit, on Thursday, el-Rufai said Lagos has remains fortunate in terms of leadership.

He said if Lagos were a country, it would have a higher gross domestic product (GDP) than many African countries.

El-Rufai added that the south-west state is a role model for Kaduna, saying he looks to Lagos becoming a top state on the ease of doing business.

“If Lagos were a country, it would have a bigger GDP than many African countries. For us in Kaduna state, Lagos is a model that we follow. You started the tax reform in Lagos before we also started some of our reforms. We look at Lagos competitive advantage in many areas and try to implement reforms that will bring us closer to what Lagos has been able to achieve,” he said.

“Lagos has been blessed with many good governors. The reforms initiated by Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu are still of benefit to the people of Lagos. Other states have not been so lucky to have visionary governors one after the other from Tinubu to Fashola to Ambode and now my brother who is breaking a new grounds to move Lagos forward.

“We are all in support not only in the growth and development of Lagos but also in the recovery of the #EndSARS protests in October. We strongly support the rebuilding of Lagos. We are proud of Lagos as the largest mega city in Africa and it is an engine of growth for the whole country.

“Kaduna is number one in ease of doing business. I look forward to Lagos becoming number two or even overtaking us. The better Lagos does, the better Nigeria does. The fate of Nigeria cannot be separated from the destiny of Lagos.”

Reacting to el-Rufai’s speech, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, thanked his Kaduna counterpart for his remark.

He commended the governor for his efforts in his state and Nigeria at large, adding that the “healthy competition” between the two states is a positive development.

Even the present governor is not doing badly. The only challenge I feel he is having is being answerable to powers from above.

True, continuity is important in governance. However, one cannot completely ignore the concerns in some quarters that a huge fraction of Lagos revenue is being siphoned into private pockets.

Hate el-Rufai or love him, he is one of the few sensible and intelligent politicians from education-hating Nigeria's north.

APC sometimes produce good governors e.g Aregbesola,Ajimobi,Fashola and so on unlike PDP Where any Governor nominate is certain to be a crook grin
Just look at how Makinde is messing up OYO State,WIKE is very wicked and Gandolar is collecting kickbacks but they seems to be the best PDP governors ever

Let's compare it with Lagos.

See foolish Igbos wailing over Lagos matter but they will not be able to list their state so we can compare developmental strides with lagos.
