Cantonese: where do I start? A good example: Trump called some countries "shithole" countries but you will never see an official letter/communication from the office of the US president, or any of his representatives (or any civilized well run organisation) refering to ANY country as a "shithole" because if that happens, it is no longer Trump the person labelling a country a shithole but the US government. In fact you did not see any country issue an official rebuttal because Trump did not "officially" call any country a shit hole. There is a difference between the office and the person that occupies the office and as a general rule, 1) you dont use emotive language in official communications 2) you don’t use instrument of office to adress personal issues. you will notice the statement was signed "Governor" not Ikpeazu Chief Press Secretary to the Governor. 23rd February, 2021." Technically speaking, it is the government of Abia state (not Ikpeazu) that has officially, on the record, pronounced Adeyemi as having a mental ilness. If Adeyemi were to sue for defamation it's not ikpeazu he will sue but the govt of Abia state! Abia state will be liable not Ikpeazu or the Press secretary. When you occupy high office, you must learn to ignore abuse and communicative with the respect the office you occupy deserves. And if you must respond, you sign it in your personal capacity without the instrument of office. 2 Likes |

Luak:Smart Adeyemi is a journalist by training, and was a former National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) for about 7 years. Okezie Ikpeazu has a PhD in Clinical Biochemistry. Ojiofor:I love the reply the ABSG gave to Senator Adeyemi. If not that I like him personally, I would have added mine. My NYSC was in his LGA and it is a pity how things are there. |

isthatso: Thank you for this explanation. I am of the opinion that on the floor of the senate, when debates are held, certain comments by our senators must be with decorum and respect. I think the senator deserved the very strong worded response that he got from the government of Abia state. Notice that he said “Abia state is governed by drunkards”. By inference he was addressing the leadership of the state. He went further to call the people of Abia impoverished, before the SP advised him to mind his words. His comments were recorded as official on the floor of the senate. The CPS of Abia state rightfully informed him that he should have addressed his fellow senator who made the supposedly negative remark about the Kogi governor. See bro, strong worded responses are issued in international politics. Look at some of the exchanges between Iran and the United States of America. You find such strong worded responses. Aside from addressing Trump in his personal capacity, some of the responses were addressed to the United States. Do not forget the threats issued. Threats are taken seriously and sometimes nations carry out actions to checkmate threats to their existence. In all and without sentiments, I think the distinguished senator went overboard with his comment. Utterances must be guided by such leaders so that the the public do not get the wrong messages. Thank you once again for taking your time to answer my question decently. |

isthatso: Well, it can also be said that the chief press secretary speaks for the governor not the government of the state. He's like the spokesman of the governor so any statement he releases is like coming from the governor. The commissioner for information is the official spokesperson of the government. Just like at federal, Adesina and Shehu speak for Buhari while Lai Mohd speaks for the government. So the reply is in his personal capacity as governor not government of the state. On the issue of Trump calling African countries shithole, it was reported by a newspaper and Trump never came out to deny or confirm it. We all just swallowed it hook, line and sinker. There was no evidence in the public domain he ever said that. So I expect you understand no country will officially raise issues with another country based on a newspaper report. Diplomacy is serious business and does not lend itself to hearsay. |

Agboriotejoye: You are missing the point. The “governor” and Ikpeazu are 2 different entities. Official communication addressed from “the Governor” is still valid even after Ikpeazu leaves office. If you get a letter from the governor awarding you a contract, the contract is valid even if the person occupying the office leaves that office. Government is a continuum “The governor” will always be there, Ikpeazu will leave one day. |
Re: Abia Government: Smart Adeyemi Suffering From Protracted Case Of Mental Illness by Agboriotejoye(m): 9:25am On Feb 24, 2021 |
isthatso:Well, smart never called ikpeazu by name. He said "the governor". That said, "the governor" and ikpeazu are not different entities as of now that the event is taking place. They are one and the same. |

isthatso:Lol. Funny dude. Who is behaving like ajegunle between you and I? What you need is a crash course on political science and governance. You claim ikpeazu as governor shouldn't have used his CPS to write a political statement. Yet you've watched Trump use his office to tear at Democrats for four years, though I doubt you own a TV. Even while campaigning, he shuttled round in Air Force One. Why didn't he use his pj since according to you Trump is different from "the president"? Same goes for Buhari and even state govs who go for campaign using their official vehicles. What am I saying self? Has Buhari ever packed out of state House when he was on leave? You know nothing. |
Re: Abia Government: Smart Adeyemi Suffering From Protracted Case Of Mental Illness by Nobody: 10:01am On Feb 24, 2021 |
Agboriotejoye: We have a saying in the SW which translates to “butter is not food for monkeys”. People who do t know how to conduct themselves in high office should not be there and if you allow miscreants into high office they will embarrass the office. Obnoxious as Trump is, show me one “official”letter where he has used any of the language he uses when he speaks. Even if he wanted to it is the job of his team, his cos, press secretary etc to clean up any official statement. The problem in Nigeria is we have elevated too many riff raff, area boys thugs into public office and their followers know no better because most of them are poorly educated themselves. Unfortunately it has become the norm and so people like you don’t know any better!! |

Re: Abia Government: Smart Adeyemi Suffering From Protracted Case Of Mental Illness by Agboriotejoye(m): 10:40am On Feb 24, 2021 |
isthatso: How many official letters from Trump have you seen? Anyway, there's one in the public domain where he tore into Mitch McConnell few weeks back. But I understand your angst. While you may have a point, your anger should first be directed at smart who called a governor a drunkard. Besides that, like I said before, the response was released by the governor's spokesman who speaks for the governor. Femi Adesina once referred to people as wailers. Same for Garba Shehu who even condescendingly referred to wole Soyinka as someone "who is only versed in writing plays". It's true that political discourse should be moderated but the question is by who? |
Re: Abia Government: Smart Adeyemi Suffering From Protracted Case Of Mental Illness by Nobody: 11:19am On Feb 24, 2021 |
Agboriotejoye: like I said butter is not the food of monkeys. firstly, my 1st post and comment was against Adeyemi isthatso: You dont fight a madman, you dont slap a woman and then expect anybody to care what the madman or woman did to you! You become the issue not the madman or what the woman did. That Adeyemi behaved badly does not warrant a response from the Abia govt talk less an official response and to go into the gutter, dragging a government into the gutter. As you can see this whole thread is about Abia government's distasteful response...nobody is talking about Adeyemi!! Someone insults you from the gutter does not mean you should go and join him in the gutter especially a high public office. All these examples you talk about are verbal, Humans can be emotional but the office CANNOT be emotional!! That it why I said there is a difference between the person and the office. Like I said, produce any official letter from any respected government office in an civilized environment or even any of the people you mentioned that abuses the recipient, Even Garba Shehu and Femi Adesina, well known for verbal diarrhea will shock me if they write such in a government letter. Until then you need to stop quoting me and spend some time polishing yourself on the finer etiquette of official communication. Otherwise go to any branch of NURTW and find people who speak your language. But for the fact that this is Nigeria and we know what the education system has become, I shouldnt really have to do much explaining to someone who claims to be educated!!! I am done!!! |
Re: Abia Government: Smart Adeyemi Suffering From Protracted Case Of Mental Illness by Agboriotejoye(m): 11:31am On Feb 24, 2021 |
isthatso:FYI, none of the examples I gave are verbal. Trump wrote the letter and released it through his spokesman Jason Miller Garba Shehu released his outburst on Soyinka thru Twitter. Same with Femi Adesina. He used the term wailing wailer in an official Christmas greetings via Twitter. Ikpeazu's CPS released this article via Twitter too. So, like I told you, this is not the first time such is done via spokespersons. A spokesman is a political aide whose allegiance is to the political activities of his boss. So, while you can request for moderation like I pointed out, you really can't say nobody else has done it before. That's a grand lie. And yes, there's no difference between the office and the person who occupies the office. The office is for a person and it exists for a person. You seem to think the office is bigger than the individuals who occupy them. That's not exactly true. That's why if ikpeazu was to steal your money, as long as he remains governor, you simply can't sue him to court. It's that simple. Besides, I wonder why you think a governor's words on camera or via SM carries less weight than that written in a official letter. Is the power of the governor vested in the letter or his person? The fact is both written and spoken words of a governor carry same weight. The effect may be different, but the weight is same. And yes. You need to stop bashing Nigeria's education because of politicians engaging in verbal war. Trump was not educated in Nigeria. Cameron who labelled Nigeria fantastically corrupt was not educated in Nigeria. Neither are Widodo, Duterte or the Brazilian President. Yet, they've all been ballistic at times while we've had very refined gentlemen who are products of Nigeria's education. Individuals differ. It has nothing to do with Nigerian education. You have not shown any superior understanding of functionaries in govt in your outbursts on this thread anyway. |
Re: Abia Government: Smart Adeyemi Suffering From Protracted Case Of Mental Illness by Nobody: 11:51am On Feb 24, 2021 |
Agboriotejoye:Twitter like I said, there is no substitute for pedigree, good education, polish and enlightenment. It would have saved you all the gibberish you just wrote and I will be dragging myself into the cgutter by continuing this back and forth. If you know you know, if you dont it's a waste of time. It is harder to re-educate a poorly educated man!! |
Re: Abia Government: Smart Adeyemi Suffering From Protracted Case Of Mental Illness by Agboriotejoye(m): 11:55am On Feb 24, 2021 |
isthatso:You don't need to make it a personal thing. Both men occupy high offices. Both were wrong in their outbursts, with Smart being the main aggressor. But where I disagree with you is your claim because Ikpeazu released an official letter, he has done worse. That's not true. The office is a political one and the letter in question is one of the instruments of that office. I hope you understand now. I rest. |
Re: Abia Government: Smart Adeyemi Suffering From Protracted Case Of Mental Illness by Nobody: 12:06pm On Feb 24, 2021 |
Agboriotejoye: Actually I just realised this was a tweet. I assumed it was a formal press statement in the form of a letter. If it was just a tweet, then while unbecoming, it's simply a reflection of the characters in office and has no formal official status. Like I said no sane office will release such a statement in an official letter. |
