I am a businessman and the thing is I am in for money in any choice I make. I made around 22 million in savings last year. Though I cut family and girlfriends off my life to achieve that and am in Nigeria.

But seeing the doings of people outside The country, there was an America based lady that spent over 12 million naira on her mother's burial. For her to spend that much I believe she will have 20x of that amount.

At least for an upright thinking fellow, I feel like am making less so am thinking of relocating. Can I make over 22 million yearly in savings in USA, If no how much can I save? Talk from your personal experience pls, Let stop deceiving each other pls, How much did you save annually in USA? Please let be sincere.

First things first, if you wanna succeed, stop using "am" for "i am".

-For a selfish “millionaire” who is happy in Nigeria, and probably has his own security and emergency services in case of his inevitable health emergencies, you write very badly.

-When I saw this “Dick-measuring” thread on the politics section, I knew it will end up with your above submission.

-Was it not last year or so, that your country’s data office said; majority of you Nigerians doesn’t even have up to #500k in savings. grin

He did say he was a businessman. If he's an igbo man too you better believe 22 million a year story.

That's the type that imports everything from electronics and cars to sell at sky-high prices here. And yet they got them for free from UK, EU and Chinese junk yards.

Is 401k, IRAs etc included in your savings calculations? Also, you work legally in America you automatically accrue social security benefits and each year they will send you a statement of how much you will get from SSA monthly if you retire today. That's savings too - you still get it even if you relocate grin

Bro that guy is correct , its you that dont know what you are saying.

If you make $600K per yr - Which is more than USA president salary. ( only 0.00001% make this amount)

you will be paying more than 50% tax
-Federal income tax
-Social Security Tax
-Medicare Tax
-State tax ( if you live in a state that collect state)

If you are doing businees on the side and you make big money above 400000 -you willpay additional 20% tax.

If you make 21m every year in naija after tax ( in profit ) after paying your bills and you want to throw that a way and move to usa then u are jonesing.

Earing 21mN as salary is different from saving 21m every

Go back again and read. He claimed you will pay 50% on 150k salary. If you are paying 50% on 150k, then you should be paying 80% on 600k salary.

I won’t be talking much except ofcourse you can share your experience living in the US. 21million naira is just around $45k

Modified: If you are doing side business, you only pay tax on your net income after deducting expenses. You only pay tax if your side business takes you up to the next tax bracket. You don’t have to pay extra

So they save between 10 to 20k annually? Why will I step feet in that place if they make below what I make here
Maybe because of quality of life.
Opportunities for children, good schools etc. (especially Canada).

-I believe the angle I’m looking at is more fundamental than the way you are seeing it.

-I’m talking about the major benefit of traveling abroad or outside your local domain, which is exposure. Isolation has been known as one of the major ingredients for backwardness, hence why I advocate for Nigerians to travel and see. I’m not after how they can afford it, am talking about the benefit for them and their society. As par expenses- it’s not my expense, so I will leave that bit for the individual.

-Yes, dreams and aspirations do change or get modified over time. As Sigmund Freud taught us in his Psychodynamic analysis, our dreams comes in layers. In order words, someone’s dream can be to just to leave Nigeria, that doesn’t mean that’s where the person’s dream ends. That could well be the start of the person’s dream. You get me now?

-Meanwhile, those names you pulled out are people of exceptional talents, that comes once in a generation, not your average Joe. It’s like comparing Professor Wole Soyinka with the likes of Carl Jung and Nietzsche. Not everyone has the talent to be super-successful or a Ronaldo, a kid’s football dream could just be to become a Jurgen Klopp - who played a little and become a football coach.

-Don’t be a classist. Every human and their society can benefit from migration not just your “serious-minded and rich Nigerians”. Even the rich can benefit from the “poor” being exposed.

You are right on point. The advantages are quite enormous. You don’t have to struggle for a whole lot before doing things by yourself. Like I said, it’s an individual thing. I have a school mate that left Shlum BJ for Canada just of recent.

Don’t be deceived, we pay a lot of bills here and we are not really concerned with how much our net savings are. I can’t speak for the big boys though. You pay for mortgage, insurance, sewage, cable, water, BGE, HOA, gas and everything you can think of. But in all, even though I religiously pay all my bills, it’s far better a million times that living in Nigeria (my personal opinion)

That assumption in bold is cataclysmic at best. The idea of gauging a persons net worth from how they spend has proven a disastrous one over ages.
By the way, That 22m saved would have been like N9m if not for Buhari's economics.

Not just in America even in Europe, most Nigerians suffer in America and Europe to be able to come back to Nigeria for one month with their stupid poverty mentality to impress Nigerians back home, and nigerians back ignorantly observing this set of Nigerians spending money anyhow, they would start developing the idea to go there too

Health insurance does not work that way. The theory of health insurance is pulling resources from lots of people to help few people who are ill. For example, my daughter's birth 2 years ago cost $30k due to surgery and I did not get a single cent as bills. My wife and I have good insurance and they take care of the bills.
I know of someone who had Covid bad. Stayed in hospital for over 2 months, was on ventilator and almost died. His bill was almost 2 million dollara and medicare took care of it without sending him a bill.

MrGoood:

Stop this Bigman of a thing, I watched a program on bbc , Many re in USA jail because they don’t have 2000$ For bail or whatever, I can’t really remember because it been long so I can’t recall that much, I don’t know what there offenses re, Simultaneously That means you can have health issues in USA and insurance won’t help much , so you think insurance will cover 70,000$ health bills when you actually don’t pay more than 100$ health insurance monthly? they will cut a deal with you not pay all, Stop making Nigeria look bad pls, We have issues but no where is 200% sure

I am not arguing about rent being different in different states and cities, the thing is,if you are a Nigerian and you are hoping to secure a stable job in U.S,you have to move to place like Dallas, Huston, Saint Thomas, or the sate of California, all of which have an expensive rental and homeless problem. So since you are saying rent are less than 1k per month, please point out a city in U.S were rent is less than 1k in an area that is not a project.

I can tell you ten cities with rent less than 1k. Stop misleading people. You definitely don't have enough information to back up your assertions. College station is a city in texas and you can get a 2br for less than 1k in a cool area. There are many more like that.

Depends what you do in America. If you work for somebody or company, I don't care if you are a doctor, engineer or lawyer, or mere warehouse worker, your income will be limited by tax even if you live frugally because you have no control of your taxes and you will shed almost 50% in taxes if you make more across taxes (federal, state, property and estate). Lets say you make $150k, government collect almost $75k in taxes across. You are left with $75k, after your house, car, emergency and personal expenses, you re left with $10-20k in the bank every yr. You can live a comfortable life but you will never be wealthy!

Now, if you own your own business, not mom and pop kiosk, I mean real business over $500k in revenue, you will have more control of your taxes. Once you understand how America works, which most Nigerians or black immigrants never understand anyways...just living the American dream blindly( big house and nice cars) and fatally in debt, you will know that America rewards business owners and entrepreneurs. Most Asian immigrants understand this which is why they own their own business and don't work for people!

Any Nigerian you know that is very very wealthy in America, has his/her own big business. These are not small boys and girls, they have over 5 employees (that's over $200k/90million in payroll a year assuming $45k each employee a yr), business location cost $500k-$5million. They rarely pay taxes because their business give them that advantage. Go and read why and how the rich in America pay zero to no taxes...actually government doesn't want you to if you create job, invest or an entrepreneur!

All what this guy wrote here are things he knows nothing about. Which government takes 50% of income as tax? Lol. I work in the US and I have family and friends in every major industry. Nobody, I repeat nobody pays 50% as tax on income. Not even close!

Just leave them to keep saying Rubbish. Many of them don’t even know what the US looks like and they are trying as much as possIble to be here. I hope they are not discouraging others from living a better life. 50% on Tax is insanely impossible

There are a couple of things in the US that are very deceiving,
1-Credit cards
2-Taxes
3-Education/Student Loans

With the above 3 points, it is literally impossible to make that kind of savings except
1. You do not use Credit cards
2. You own your own business and do not get regular salary taxes
3. You did not school in the US

All my friends I know in Australia, makes at least Aud$100,000k annually and most of them started making this money from their 2nd year in their Msc program.

Honestly, from the best of my knowledge, there's no country on earth that's fertile like Australia.

Thanks for your contribution this really help, I am waiting for someone that will mention the exact amount he or she save last year

MrGoood, let me clear my throat with well.

I’ll start by congratulating you for your resilience and business as well as your discipline in saving around N15m in a harsh and unfriendly business environment like Nigeria. You’ve done this with the temptations of vagina people in Nigeria and the distractions and ‘entitlements’ of some friends and family member.
You’ve done well....

However, you created this thread because ‘one lady’ who live in the US spent about N12m in some burial !!!

Bro, stop calculating people’s spendings like EFCC or the IRS... this is wrong...verrrrry wrong.

God has blessed you and you are making more money than lots of people whether in Nigeria or in some well paid jobs abroad and you are thinking of relocating to make more...nothing wrong with that...but you’ve been prompted by some lady who spent about N12m in burying a family member!!

I have a feeling that you are Igbo like me so I’ll say this....

Nwokem kpachapu anya, fie asaa na anya...

Ebe Onye no, ebe onoghi ana agu ya. Ekwekwana ka ya bu aka enwe baa na ofe.

Ignore if you are not Igbo.

This is not the spirit of hustling or ambition pushing you, this is GREED.

Guy to save 22m in Nigeria in Nigeria within a year you're doing well for yourself. Please desist from using others open display of achievement to judge your achievement.

The lady you are using as a yardstick you don't know what she does to make money, most of the money could be gift from well wishers to support her for her mums burial
