Well, that simply means you need to read broader.

In North America, learnt is a SLANG.

Talking about the English used in Nigeria, yes, we officially use British English, but that's only for English exams. Aside that, we mix the rest, both in spoken and written English.

And, no one should be castigated for using either of them. Again, a new form of English language called Nigerian English is even on the rise gradually. And it combines the both.
