The Beginning

This indeed is going to be another chapter as I indeed exploring the animal farming sector.

Recently, I have been reading up different articles on goat rearing and it's profitability. Having gotten all materials needed, I guess I am set to exploring another chapter in my farming experience, and this time, it going to be with Goats.

I went to a local village along Badagry Express way, Ikoga to be precise. Took a while before getting the African Dwarf goat that melted my heart. I got two females. Also, i visited a farm within the same axis and paid for a pregnant Hausa goat - Rago (Wish I knew the real name) which I would be picking up later in the week.

Two African Dwarf Goats (Females): 10 per each. = N20,000
One Pregnant Hausa goat: N15,000

Total: N35,000

The two African dwarf goats are both from the same parent and 8months each.

Naming my goats

Still thinking of the perfect names for my pioneer goats.

More updates soon

What's your location? If Lagos, Alaba Rago should be just fine. But you need to go with someone well informed and honest enough to tell you which is which you are buying.

It is a great topic.
Also, do you consider making a business about yogurt making?
You only need to invest in a small yogurt making machine, then you can start the business.

Wow!!! Been following this thread since you started.

My father in law brought a goat for my baby naming ceremony but it was too small to kill (my perspective) so I decided to start rearing it. a family friend brought two other goats a week later.

At the end of November 2020, I had three female does in my care. One was pregnant but I noticed the other two were pregnant too. Guess all three came pregnant.

What's the pregnancy duration for a goat?

How do I know their breed as they look different
?

The biggest doe gave birth to two kids (A buck and doe, the buck is super active unlike the doe) on march 16 though it hardly breast feed them (How do I solve this?)

The second one gave birth to a kid (a buck too though I was hoping for a doe) yesterday and both of them are doing well.

Just finished building a shelter for them as I don't want them to mess up the shop I was using for them anymore. Separated the shelter into three for now.

Unexpectedly it started and I guess am doing well.
I also need to know the best food to give them as I don't want to allow them to roam freely in the neighborhood.
I stay around mowe/ofada.

Testing my skills with five broilers since November too but am yet to get the feeding of these livestock's. Both poultry and livestock.

How do I grow this?

I just like your approach. This is what I am talking about. Verifying 3 little ones per birth is the KEY you are holding on to.

Bro, if you can add another technique to your pilot program, it will be lovely. If I was to go into livestock today, I would include growing fodder hydroponically. Think about it. I am sure you can do it. It will reduce your cost of production very well. However, you might have to spend now. Feeding livestocks with fodder from hydroponic has been proven to make them grow faster, bigger, heathier, and more profitable at the long run.

Well, maybe you want to explore organic fodder hydroponic production. Maybe. Lol. I think you are more of organic too.

Basically, I love this concept. Bless you!

Can't you just give them Tagiri (Christmas melon) or be soaking bitterleaf and dongonyaro leaves inside their drinking water instead of vaccination?

The Unfortunate End!!! cry cry

It gives me no joy at all to write that the goats are no more. I had to dispose all off to quickly sort out an emergency issue. It wasn't the best of decision but thank God the goats were there to help cushion the effects as at when needed (advantage of goat rearing).

Nevertheless, I should be kick-starting the project back in a couple of months.

Thanks.

Hydroponics is just raising seeds in a container without soil.
It's the same process used to prepare or sprout seeds for kunu (local drink)
I once used it on broilers after 9 weeks and it was ok for weight gain.

Hydroponics is the way to go for a modern farm but it will be profitable for animals with improved breed. Goats, Cows and even rams in this part of the world don't have improved breeds. They are just local as God created them.

Improved breeds of Pigs, Rabbits, Grass cutter will thrive well on fodder. Assuming we have improved breeds of commercial goats like the boer goats of South Africa, Kalahari red goats or the savavanah white goats known for fast growth and heavy weight, Intensive farming will have been extremely successful. Imagine matured boer goats reaching over a 130kg in weight.

Goats, Sheep and Cattle would have been best on fodder or hydroponics since they are 100% grass fed.

Good Afternoon, how are you doing? Hope work is fine. Please I need to contact you. I need to ask some questions ranging from how to cater for goats and what types of grass and legumes I should plant for my goats. My WhatsApp no is 07087776267.
