It is cheaper if you live alone and you restrict it to one hot meal a day and how you eat

Nigerians always believe home cooked food is cheaper than eating in a restaurant. But is it true?
I understand it may be so for a large family, but for a single person is it really cheaper?

If we stick to strictly cost and not variable factors like washing pant water grin cheesy or unhygienic environment.

See question o.

over here a plate of food is about 400
now, consider buying that twice or at most thrice a day that's about 1200 and you have the liberty of buying different food per course
but going for cooking it might be a bit higher in cost but lasts more like two days but you'd have a monopoly of food which means you'd still have to buy another stuff

I don't think so
.....for years now I eat out I think it's cheaper

I stay alone and when I do cook , I found myself over eating ....always going back to.the pot to eat more

So a thousand and few hundreds a day is better than hours spent to cook and then wash plates and the rest.

I will say it depends on the quantity and quality of the food. There is this place I buy afang soup, they sell a small takeaway plate @ about N4500. With delivery is approx N5500. Now would I not cook a good pot of afang soup of about 1l with N4500 and eat it many times? That is assuming I have the basic ingredients sha.

For me, I also consider the energy and time involved- that is what makes it expensive to always cook at home. Sometimes I just order out to save myself stress abeg.

Anyway, I noticed na poor people chop outside pass o. Whenever I am braiding my hair in those roadsides hairdressers, I will watch the woman buy N100 rice for her kids.

We should also consider the fact that many Nigerians do not have bulk money to use and cook a single meal. Soup wey them no even get light/refrigerator to preserve.

I think it is healthier, but not always cheaper.

Your example/analysis makes one think it's actually cheaper. Shelve the energy and time involved (except one is busy with work).

It makes sense to say cooking is way cheaper than eating outside (at least, in the long run).

You don’t need to ask the whole Nigerians this question. You can just try it then tell us the outcome

Haven't been home in a while, however, when i was around, yes, it was far cheaper. Also, every country I have been to in the last 5 years happens to be the same thing, cheaper to cook at home.

The other day, I bought BBQ chicken of about 4 pieces at a mega mart for around 43, I checked the freshly packed chicken section, and I saw fully packed chicken of about 15 pieces for 73. Yes, frying might take some oil, however, its far cheaper and economical.

Same super mart, you buy a small box of cooked rice for 15 or 20, and you get 10kg of uncooked rice for 110. Now if you cook the 10kg, am sure you will eat it like 25 times depending.

I actually hate eating outside and I find it odd when some people take it as a day-to-day routine
I will rather drink garri in my house than eat EBA nd assorted meat filled soup outside.

I order Litres of different soups and protein, then make solid( in 10mins) and rice/beans myself. Cheaper and saves time.
That way you can eat as much as you want even if you do 9 to 5, you can eat on time. This method works.

If you have nothing to do and your time is not valuable, it is cheaper to cook at home.

But when you become someone of value and people pay you good money for using your time to provide services, you won't waste your time washing fish because you want to save 3 or 5k. Afterall, what is 5k to you when they are paying you 1000 dollars to transcribe speeches from Chinese to English.

This

If you are a big earner, the chances that it affords you less time to cook is actually high, and spending on buying food outside may not seem as expensive to you. There are caterers that sell a litre of soup for 4,500-6000, if you're a single person, chances are, if you spend 12k for soup and stew for instance, it will last you a month. Let's add another 20k, for other meals you may want to buy on occassion, that's 42k/month.

Anyway, if you're making a thousand grand, things like this will not matter to you.

It depends on your work schedule, for the busy type, eating outside does it for me on weekdays. But weekends I arrange something for myself.
