If only we had allowed GEJ's attempt at full subsidy removal in 2012 to stand!

Today, we would have completely forgotten about subsidy, government would have had more money, the Naira would have remained at 168 or less against the dollar, modular refineries would have sprung up all over the place, pump price may have dropped to less than NGN100, massive job creation would have happened etc etc

Unfortunately, some irredeemably dummb Nigerians forced GEJ to change his policy.

And the spineless GEJ too gave in!!

Now, deregulation would have to happen under Buhari and it's going to be more painful.

When GEJ removed subsidy, the pump price became N141. Crude oil price in the world market was around USD100. It could not get worse.

If Buhari removes subsidy, the pump price will become N216. Crude oil price in world market is around USD70. It may get worse.

So you see, Nigerians have been pennywise pound foolish... angry
Exactly.

The sad thing is Nigerians love cheap fuel too much to see clearly.

Lord knows I was no fan of GEJ, but on subsidy he was right.

Deregulation of PMS is a welcomed development but my fears is how efficiently can this government judiciously utilize the money. We are truly suffering in this country o.

Meanwhile brighten your day with these interesting quotes here
The weather in the morning decides the day. How government spends its earnings now is how they will spend any savings from subsidy. Earnings have never translated to better governance.

Nigeria can never move forward with these set of incompetent, confused, selfish and greedy entities in power headed by the Chief dullard himself.

The average Nigerian seller is greedy. With full deregulation, fuel will never be cheap again in Nigeria
The alternative is NNPC spending money it should be using to repair and upgrade refineries on subsidizing fuel.

GEJ spent nearly 4 trillion naira keeping fuel at N97-87 naira...money that could have been saved or used for repairing our refineries then. Buhari has spent trillions too subsidizing fuel. At some point, we have to face the truth, and stop throwing money down the bottomless pit.

Also, marketers are making millions smuggling fuel to places like Niger, where it costs N350 per liter.Millions at our expense.

They are 'confused' because no Nigerian government wants to fully deregulate...which is why this comment by Sylva is a surprise.

The truth is, if Buhari deregulated completely in 2015, fuel would be costing N300 and above. He would also have been voted out in a landslide in 2019, with the vote in Katsina going against him, and his successor comes in and reduces fuel prices to N90....because he knows .....

Deregulation, total deregulation, is better for our economy, but the problem is that high fuel prices means high food prices. And most Nigerians are not lovers of long term thinking...

The Nigerian Government does not have any legitimate claim to deregulate the price or the petroleum sector when they can't create an enabling environment or even put in check market forces of such.
All they try to do is put up some shady half concocted statement to bamboozle people.
Since 1999 till date the nation's refinery cannot refine her crude oil to meet demands.
Since 1999 till date the nation cannot build new refineries.
Since the Nigerian government has failed why can't they allow those boys who are into illegal bunkering in the bushes to put up modular refineries within acceptable conditions and policies guiding them to meet demands in their regions!!!!!

China buys crude oil and refines it to meet her demands for economic growth. What have we learnt from them all these years!!!!

What's the land mass of the UAE compared to the that of Nigeria and her fictitious population statistics. What have we also learnt from such the UAE system.

Before the fall of Libya, how was the petroleum sector there.....what have we learnt also from there.....

Why can't we do what is typical to our environment that will solve the peculiar issues we have rather than doing what bring more hardship on the masses.

God bless Nigeria.

We Rise![/quote]May be you forgot Sir!

God bless our darling President Maj.Gen Mohammadu Buhari (RTD) and his amiable Vice President Prof Yemi Osibanjo for the good work they are doing to move our darling country forward.

If only Nigerians supported GEJ's full deregulation of the downstream sector about 10years ago, we wld have been better for it today. This same Buhari led the campaign against it, he was at the forefront of the campaign of calumny, arguing that our refineries can be fixed and made to function optimally. Today, how many years down the line after he took over, none of our national refineries have produced even one tanker of products.

I am not one of those that will stand against Buhari because he fought against the same policy while he was on the other side of the divide. No No No. This deregulation is long over due. I employ all Nigerians to welcome it, and support this APC's administration so that we can get it done once and for all. If we defer it today, we will still come to it tomorrow, with much more pain that we wld have had if we allowed it today.

Total deregulation is the key, let's support it. Tell your neighbours, colleagues, friends and family members to key into it today. That way, we can thwart the resistance these good for nothing and politicians-hijacked NLC and TUC normally bring forth whenever Nigeria wants to record a major breakthrough and turnaround.

In ' voice,

God bless Nigeria

I rise.....never to fall again.

If NNPC's price is cheap other companies wouldn't go for a sharp price increase.

Subsidy savings will help strengthen the Naira too.

Let me introduce you to pi network
Pi is a new form.of cryptocurrency ,just like bitcoin in its early stage in2008 it's being mined for free now.and the process of mining it is stress free.all you need to do is download the app sign up and click a button once every 24hrs.
Though the cryptocurrency has no value now till it's listed in stock market/exchange by the need of 2021.
But untill then people are mining it for free and accumulating pi coin and it has over 13million plus users and counting.
Mining might stop at anytime because the coreteam are developing pi wallet and market places when they are done,it will stop.
So download the app and start mining,it will not take you more than 5sec of your time everyday to do so for a brighter future when it actually becomes reality. And don't forget to verify your number or Facebook by going to your profile in the app.by doing this ,you will not loose your earning when pi goes to exchnange,
If you are interested, download Pi app from play store and enter my invite code (pst4sam) on sign-up

Exactly. Who blames the Ghanaian government over petrol price again? None because they deregulated. We don't even hear people complain about the price of kerosene and diesel anymore. Thanks to deregulation. But government needs to phase their policies. You can't increase electricity bill and Petrol price at the same time.

Well, I didn't claim to be the quantum of knowledge....

What stops NNPC from flooding the market with cheaper petroleum products in a bid to make petroleum products cheaper?

If NNPC's price is cheap other companies wouldn't go for a sharp price increase.
Well, NNPC has been subsidizing fuel..so by extension has been 'flooding the market with cheap fuel' so to speak

If they were to make the price cheaper...ie reduce it to N40, the amount they would have to pay as subsidy, especially as fuel costs N200 and above to import (per liter)....would nearly double and put pressure on our limited foreign reserves...driving us further into debt.

Besides fuel is very cheap here...most West African countries charge above N300 per liter for fuel...including oil producers like Niger, and Chad.(Which is why many marketers smuggle fuel to these countries to sell for a profit...one of many reasons why Buhari shut down the borders)

Also, we have been running a subsidy...ie paying an amount of money to the marketers and producers of oil in this country to keep prices of fuel below the price that would be profitable for them...for decades...since at least the 1990's....which is one of the reasons why we don't have functioning refineries. The subsidy we pay does not adequately cover the losses made...which is why you have all sorts of sharp practices like smuggling, over invoicing the government, scarcity, black marketeering, and so on.

When you spend 4 trillion naira in 5 years subsiding fuel from NNPC 's coffers (which is what it costed the government between 2010-15)...and even more than that since then....NNPC won't be in a financial state to build new refineries, or properly maintain existing ones.

Note that a subsidy works by the government telling the petroleum industry to charge less than the actual cost of refining the fuel, while the government pays them what would cover the resulting loss. Usually it is not enough, and because the source of the money is not from taxes (as seen in Canada, for example) but from oil money (usually limited due to rising and falling oil prices)...the industry runs at a loss. At the end of the day, refienreis fail quite simply because it is no longer profitable to run them. Saboteurs and thieves have a field day raiding the carcasses left.

If there had been no subsidy, and prices had been set by the marketers, there would have been enough profit to pay for refineries maintenance and upgrades...and new refineries.

Subsidy savings will help strengthen the Naira too.

Above all, we in the oil producing communities do not gain from the so called subsidy so it means nothing.
True.

Nobody is against full deregulation but make sure we are able to refine locally first before deregulating.By so doing petrol price will be less than N100 per litre
