Due to the incessant rain, a road in Anambra state that links commuters to Awka, the state capital yesterday divided into two after a heavy downpour.

The Nibo-Umuawulu-Awgbu road is a major road that links commuters and communities within to Awka. Commuters now find it difficult to get across make their daily dealings.

Government urgent attention is highly needed to fix and make it easier for the people.

[sub]The Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering (SCUML) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Gombe Zonal office, to)))?August 30, 2018 raided two car dealers for non compliance with the provisions of Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended) and the regulations of Designated Non- Financial Institution (Regulatory Manual) 2013 that regulates the activities of DNFIs.

The companies are HAMABB MOTORS NIG. LTD along Atiku Abubakar road, Jimeta Yola, Adamawa state and Halal Synergy Limited along Galadima Aminu Way, Jimeta. They belong to the duo of  Abba Galadima and Mansur Abdurahman respectively. They were arrested in the course of the operation.

Several efforts made by the SCUML officers from Gombe Zonal office by serving the companies with letters of notification for registration in June, 2016, as well as inspection and sensitation in July and November 2017 to register proved abortive.

Another observation letter was equally served to the companies sometime in 2017 to comply with the law but also yielded no results.

The Companies's actions violated the provisions of Section 3; Section 5 (a) & (b), Section 9 and 10 of Money Laundering ( Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended), as clearly stated in the observation letters issued to them. .

Their non compliance resulted to non registration with SCUML, non reporting transactions and accepting cash payment exceeding the threshold provided by law.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office on Thursday August 30, 2018 arraigned Adeshina Taoheed Aderemi, Adekoya Abosede and Ishola Abiodun Kazeem before Justice R. B. Akintola of the State High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, on a seven-count charge bordering on forgery, uttering and obtaining money by false pretence.

The syndicate journey to the dock followed a petition to the Commission from their victim (name withheld) alleging that sometimes in 2018, he paid the sum of N695, 000.00 (Six Hundred and Ninety Five Thousand Naira) to the defendants through the first defendant’s (Mr. Adeshina Taoheed Aderemi) bank account, domiciled in one of the new generation banks (name withheld) for them to secure a Canadian Visa for him. .

According to the petitioner, the defendants conspired and issued him a “Canadian Visa” affixed to his International Passport.

Investigation by the EFCC confirmed that the defendants were not travel agents and that the “Canadian Visa” issued to the complainant was fake.

The defendants however, pleaded not guilty, after the charge was read to them.

In view of their plea, counsel to the EFCC, Dr. Ben Ubi, applied for a trial date and urged the court to remand the defendants in prison custody. .

However, defense counsel, Samuel C. Uzoewulu, informed the court that he had filed two summons for bail dated August 29, 2018 for the second and third defendants and that he only served the prosecution this morning.

He also prayed the court  to allow the second defendant to remain in EFCC’s custody, pending the hearing of her bail application, considering her condition as a pregnant woman.

However, Dr. Ubi told the court that he was not aware of her condition and that he will not be objecting due to the said condition.

Justice Akintola however, adjourned the matter to September 4, 2018 for hearing of bail applications.
