Religion / Six Exciting Reasons Nigerians Love Easter by pre5: 3:57am On Apr 20, 2019 |
Source:https://www.toptipz.com.ng/six-exciting-reasons-nigerians-love-easter/ Six Exciting Reasons Nigerians Love Easter After Christmas and New Year, the most anticipated holiday among Nigerians is Easter. Easter for many is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ while for others it is much more than a celebration. Whatever the case maybe, the undeniable fact is that Nigerians love Easter, the leading online travel agency shares 7 exciting reasons why. 1 It is a deserved break from your regular routine For quite a number of Nigerians, this is the first holiday they are having since the Christmas and New Year break. Hence, they look forward to taking a well-deserved Easter break that will allow them to get out of the rut and do other things. 2 Enough shows and event Since Easter is one of the longest holidays in the country, a lot of shows are fixed during the period. From music to comedy and drama, they are all open for you to attend as long as you pay the gate pass. 3 No work To put it mildly, some employees are already basking in the euphoria that they won’t have to go work for two days (Friday & Monday.). In addition, the holiday also knocks out Monday that you probably dislike. So, Easter holiday is a moment they cherish and savour. This doesn’t mean they don’t love what they do though. For persons who will still go to work, sorry! Lol! 4 Spend a good time with family and friends This may be simplistic but you will be surprised that some individuals are homesick. They cannot wait to return home to see wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, and even parents. The Easter holiday makes this possible especially for those who leave home in the week and return weekend. Even if you return home daily, you will still be excited about the holiday because you will relax and have fun with your friends and family. 5 Opportunity to Travel home For Nigerians who didn’t go home in December, Easter is an opportunity for them to travel to see their people in the village. This is peculiar with Igbos of Eastern Nigeria whose trade sojourn has taken them to different parts of Nigeria. 6 Rest & Sleep If you are not travelling, you can simply stay home and recover lost strength by simply sleeping and waking. Anyway, make sure you enjoy this long holiday!

Education / What To Do If UTME Is Not Holding At Your Centre – JAMB Advises Candidates by pre5: 3:12am On Apr 13, 2019 |
toptipz.com.ng What To Do If UTME Is Not Holding At Your Centre – JAMB Advises Candidates The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has directed candidates on what to do if the UTME is not holding in their centres. Head of Media and Information at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, has suggested what candidates in the ongoing UTME should do if they discover on examination day that the exam is not holding at their centres, NAN reports. He said the Board had discovered that some examination centres had fallen short of the standards in terms of facilities and other logistics; and that JAMB was doing everything possible to ensure that candidates in such centres are not short-changed by any means. Fabian spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos. Fabian said, “I will like to mention that some centres have fallen short of the standards of the Board in terms of facilities and other logistics. “The Board is doing everything possible to ensure that candidates in such centres are not short-changed by any means. “They should not panic, as they will be relocated to new centres by the Board in due course. “The Board will relocate them to new centres for the examination, with new dates.” He advised the affected candidates to check their profiles from time to time for the new centres and dates for their examination. “The Board is not happy with this development, as it has been discovered that most of such centres are mainly those situated in secondary schools, with their owners claiming to have perfect facilities on ground before the commencement of the examination. “Others involved themselves in one infraction or the other. “We are not going to take these issues lightly with defaulting centres and their owners. At the appropriate time, they will be sanctioned,” Benjamin said. He said that candidates who thought their centres were shut out from the examination should not panic, as it meant they had been relocated. “With the complaints we got from such centres without capacity to meet the Board’s examination standards, we quickly swung into action to relocate the candidates, as we do not want them to feel cheated or get confused. “So, these candidates might arrive at such centres to discover that nothing is happening there. “They should not panic, they should just know that they have been relocated from such centres to a new one. “All they have to do is to continue to check their profiles for information on their new centres and dates for the examination,” he said. He said that JAMB would continue to deploy resources within its powers to ensure that no candidate is left behind. The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu confirmed their arrest on Wednesday while addressing journalists on the activities and successes of the Command in the last two weeks. toptipz.com.ng Newborn Baby Girl Born With Arabic Inscriptions On Her Body In Sokoto A baby girl was born in Sokoto with Arabic inscriptions on her body and this development has left everyone in awe. The child has Arabic inscriptions on her chest, thigh, and back as though they were tattooed there. She also has a birthmark that looks like the crescent-shaped moon – one of the symbols of Islam – on her ankle. The child was born on March 2, 2019. Her birth has turned her parents’ home into a sort of Mecca as people troop in to see the unusual occurrence. The baby is the fourth child of her parents, who have been married for 16 years now. According to Daily Trust, the child’s father, a Mobile Police officer named Alhaji Hussaini is based in Katsina. The mother Saratu Yusuf, 24, of Garkan Sardauna Sokoto North Local Government, told Caliphate Trust that she never experienced anything unusual during the pregnancy. She said: The pregnancy went very smoothly much more than others. I had no complication, from the beginning to the day I gave birth at Police Clinic along Barth Road Sokoto. The labour started at about 6 am and delivered exactly at 6pm. We did not notice anything at the hospital until we got home when my elder sister wanted to bathe her, she discovered the inscription on her chest, thigh and back. She also has a crescent sign on her ankle. So many people trooped to our house from within and outside the state metropolis, from Wurno, Rabah and other Local government areas. It got to a point when I had to flee my matrimonial home to my parents’ house to escape people’s disturbance. The child’s mother also pointed out another peculiar thing about her “miracle baby”. She said the child can’t have her ear lobe pierced for earrings because several attempts to pierce the child’s ear lobe have proved unsuccessful. Newborn baby girl born with Arabic inscriptions on her body in Sokoto The father, who was in Katsina at the time of the delivery, said on receiving news of the baby, he was so full of anxiety that he could not even sleep on that day. Preparations are being made for a naming ceremony for the baby. It should have been held earlier but due to the father’s absence, it was scheduled for Saturday, March 16. Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Saad Abubakar was amazed when the baby was taken to his Palace. He expressed total submission to Allah for His wonders. The royal father donated N100, 000, a ram, and 5 pieces of clothing materials to the family. He urged the mother to take exceptional care of the child.toptipz Source:https://www.toptipz.com.ng/newborn-baby-girl-born-with-arabic-inscriptions-on-her-body-in-sokoto/

Celebrities / Facebook's Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox Quits After 13-years With The Compan by pre5: 12:16pm On Mar 15, 2019 |
toptipz.com.ng Facebook's Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox quits after 13-years with the company Facebook’s Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, arguably the most important person at the company after Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg, is leaving the company, Zuckerberg announced on Thursday Cox’s departure comes as Facebook is preparing its purported pivot to a privacy-focused social network, and just one day after the New York Times reported a criminal investigation into Facebook’s data-sharing agreements with more than 150 companies. Chris Daniels, who was heading up WhatsApp, is also leaving. “We are turning a new page in our product direction, focused on an encrypted, interoperable, messaging network. It’s a product vision attuned to the subject matter of today: a modern communications platform that balances expression, safety, security, and privacy. This will be a big project and we will need leaders who are excited to see the new direction through” Cox wrote in a Facebook post Thursday. The departures are just the latest in a string of high-profile exits from Facebook in the past several months, and mean the company’s leadership team will undergo a significant reshuffling. According to Zuckerberg’s post, WhatsApp will get a new leader in Will Cathcart, who has until now been the head of the main Facebook app. Fidji Simo, who had been a product boss for video, advertising, and news, will take over Cathcart’s role. Cathcart and Simo, along with the heads of Messenger and Instagram, will report directly to Zuckerberg (they had previously been under Cox and another executive). Cox has been at Facebook for 13 years; he took on on a variety of roles, and acted as a key aide to Zuckerberg. Here’s how Zuckerberg describes Cox’s tenure: Chris and I have worked closely together to build our products for more than a decade and I will always appreciate his deep empathy for the people using our services and the uplifting spirit he brings to everything he does. He has played so many central roles at Facebook starting as an engineer on our original News Feed, building our first HR teams and helping to define our mission and values, leading our product and design teams, running the Facebook app, and most recently overseeing the strategy for our family of apps. Along the way, Chris has helped train many great leaders who are now in important roles across the company including some who will now take on bigger roles in our new product efforts. Zuckerberg says Cox had been talking about starting “something else” for several years, but stayed at Facebook to help guide it through the turmoil it has experienced since 2016.toptipz . Yesterday we received a distress call from a nurse (Name withheld) who told us about a 14yrs old girl led into a private hospital for Abortion. We quickly traveled to Warri, arrived at the hospital and took the girl away and quickly reported to the police. The girl shared to us us how Samuel (Keke rider) forcefully had intercourse with her and showed us injury she sustained in her right hand when she tried to run away from the room. Investigations also revealed Samuel’s brother also had sexual intercourse with the victim. At about 6:15am, we got Samuel arrested and handed over to the police for further investigations and prosecution. This is to inform the general public to always protect, teach their child and save them from paedophile who are looking for any opportunity to strike. It’s everyone’s worst nightmare – the thought of someone living near you harming your child. We plead with all Government Agencies responsible for child welfare to step out of their comfort zone to protect our children. In each intervention, we spend close to N100,000 (Transportation, Mobilize Police, investigations Legal fees and Accommodation). *“When parents and children are educated about situations that may put a child at risk, they are empowered, and the risk for the child to become victimized is decreased,” HARRISON About 10-30 percent of child abuse victims never report their abuse because many don’t recognize their victimization as abuse, or they are afraid to speak. Join us to keep parents alert. *DONATE* Your donation will help us solve the above listed problems for our next intervention. Politics / Oshiomhole Does Not Have The Powers To Suspend Me – Governor Okorocha by pre5: 8:23am On Mar 04, 2019 |
toptipz.com.ng Oshiomhole does not have the powers to suspend me – Governor Okorocha The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has said that Adams Oshiomhole, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has no powers to suspend him. Recall that on Friday March1st, the National Working Committee of the APC announced the suspension of Governor Okorocha and his Ogun state counterpart, Ibikunle Amosun, for anti-party activities. Both governors are supporting governorship candidates of different parties. In an interview with Channels TV last night, Okorocha said the party National chairman, Adams Oshiomole, is working towards the destruction of the party and that Oshiomole, does not have the power to suspend him. “I just heard from media reports that I have been suspended from the party (APC). I think Adams is seeking for relevance and attention. He doesn’t have such powers to remove somebody without following due process. I have also decided to sack him myself. If he thinks he can just stand up and say he is suspending me from a party I founded without due process, in the same manner I have also sacked him from the party. I think Adams is the biggest player of anti-party in APC. The man has simply destroyed the party to a great extent. The candidate that Oshiohmole imposed on the party in Imo State lost his votes for the Presidential election and all the members of the coalition in Imo State worked for PDP” he said In a related development, Governor Okorocha, in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, last night, said President Buhari is not in support of Oshimhole’s action of suspending him. The statement read “Adams Oshiomhole has done so many strange things with the party and it would be wrong for anybody to think that President Buhari, known for his penchant for decency, honesty and forthrightness would be on the same page with the national chairman. “The President was voted by Nigerians across the geo-political zones because he has proved to be real and can be trusted. When he said he was fighting corruption, you saw it happening. It cannot be the same thing with someone who saw sold the tickets of the party to the highest bidders. “We have yet to see any Nigerian living that would have defeated President Buhari in that election. He has earned the confidence and trust of most Nigerians, and in states where he lost, you could see traces of wanton manipulation and mutilation of election figures like in the case of Imo. In other words, the President has nothing to do with Oshiomhole’s disdain for the right actions and the chairman’s penchant for lawlessness and total disregard for the party’s constitution.” Both Okorocha and Amosun have thrown their weights behind governorship aspirations of candidates other than APC’s for the March 9th governorship election. While Amosun is campaigning for Abiodun Akinlade of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Okorocha is campaigning for his son in-law, Uche Nwosu, of the Action Alliance. Politics / Voting Starts At 8am – Check Out Nine Other Things You Need To Know About The El by pre5: 11:28am On Feb 22, 2019 |
Voting Starts At 8am – Check Out Nine Other Things You Need To Know About The Elections On Saturday, Nigerians will be going to the polls for the presidential and national assembly elections. Seventy-three political parties filled candidates for the presidential election, though a number of candidates have pulled out of the race. There are also many parties contesting the 109 senate seats and 360 positions at the house of representatives. Below are basic things to know regarding the elections: VOTING TIME: According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), polling stations will open for accreditation and voting from 8am to 2pm. However, voters in the queue before the close of poll at 2pm will be accredited and allowed to vote. Unlike in the past when voting is usually delayed, in some cases till 12pm, each voter will vote immediately he or she is accredited. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE VOTING PROCESS? Any prospective voter must be a Nigerian citizen, be 18 years and above, possess a permanent voter card (PVC) and be in the voter register where he/she is assigned to vote WHERE TO VOTE: INEC says no one will be allowed to vote at a polling unit other than the one where he/she registered and got accredited. THE ACCREDITATION PROCEDURE: The accreditation process shall comprise reading of the permanent voter’s card (PVC) and authentication of the voter’s fingerprint using the SCR; checking of the Register of Voters and inking of the cuticle of the specified finger of the voter. THE VOTING PROCEDURE: Upon being accredited, an INEC official will confirm if your PVC is genuine using the card reader and that you are listed in the voters register. Your name will be ticked and your finger will be inked; the presiding officer will stamp, sign and endorse your ballot paper after which you stain your finger with the ink given and mark the box for your preferred candidate/party. You will then roll the ballot paper and leave the voting cubicle to drop the ballot paper in the ballot box. WHAT HAPPENS AFTERWARDS? You can choose to leave the polling unit or decide to stay back, but peacefully, to watch the whole process up till the collation of results. ON THE USE OF PHONES: INEC banned the use of phones at the voting cubicles. So while you have your phone within the polling unit, you must put it away when you get to the voting booth. This is to curb vote buying. ON THE USE OF SMART CARD READERS: INEC is insisting on the use of card readers to vote. The commission had said in the case where a smart card reader malfunctions, voting will be suspended till a new card reader arrives, or postponed till the next day if a replacement is not available by 2pm. ANY CHANCE THEY COULD BE MANIPULATED? INEC said the card readers are configured to specific polling units and only open for use at 8am on election day and automatically shut down by 10 pm “in order to forestall any illegal use before the appointed time of elections.” WHEN A REGISTERED VOTER CANNOT VOTE: In its election guidelines, INEC listed some cases where a voter is not eligible to vote in a particular polling unit, even though they may be in possession of a PVC. According to the guidelines, “where a voter’s PVC is read but the name of the voter is not on the Register of Voters, APO II shall refer the voter to the PO or APO (VP) who shall politely request the voter to leave the Polling Unit. “(d) In the event that the PVC fails to be read by the Smart Card Reader, the APO I shall refer the voter to the PO or APO (VP) who shall politely request the voter to leave the Polling Unit. “Any person who presents the PVC of another person with an intention to use it to vote, shall not be allowed to vote and may be liable to arrest and prosecution.” Source:https://www.toptipz.com.ng/voting-starts-at-8am-check-out-nine-other-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-elections/

According to NY Post, he previously copped to two counts of scheme to defraud and paid $50,000 in restitution as part of the sweetheart plea deal struck in December with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. “Mr. Eweka chose to do what was best for his family and his newborn son,” said his lawyer, Thomas Kenniff. “He is pleased with the court’s decision to sentence him without jail time and now looks forward to resuming a law-abiding life.” His co-defendant, Kamel McKay, pleaded guilty to the same charges in exchange for one year in jail. The defendants allegedly targeted job seekers on indeed.com, promising to find them work, including as front-desk receptionists and hotel housekeepers, in exchange for a fee of between $300 and $700, court records show. After interviewing the victims and collecting their fee, the alleged fraudsters would send them to work sites, where they were turned away by employers who weren’t expecting them. The confused job seekers were then unable to get in touch with Eweka, McKay or their bogus employment agencies. The duo pocketed $54,000 in fees and didn’t provide a single job, according to prosecutors. Eweka, who married an attorney in 2016 in an elaborate wedding ceremony in Nigeria, allegedly operated the bogus employment agency scam out of an Empire State Building office under the alias Sean Jackson Source:https://www.toptipz.com.ng/nigerian-prince-arrested-for-scamming-hundreds-of-job-seekers-of-54000-in-new-york/

At INEC’s press conference to explain the reasons for shifting the polls by a week, Oshiomhole wondered why the commission waited until 2am of the day of the elections, to move it. He described the action of the commission as an embarrassment to the country, demanding that INEC should tender an apology. “Why at 2am on the day of the election? Why? The problem is not about the postponement but why 2am on the day of the election. You have explanations to do. If you had told us since, we would have planned. “Why didn’t you tell us 48 hours ago? ‘Tottenham Can Reach Champions League Last 8’- Sancho Mauricio Pochettino says he is not surprised by the emergence of Borussia Dortmund’s English winger Jadon Sancho as Spurs prepare to take on the German side in the Champions League. The 18-year-old, who joined from Manchester City in 2017, has produced eight goals and 10 assists for the Bundesliga leaders this season. “We knew very well that he was capable of doing what he’s doing now,” Pochettino said. “We were talking in the last few years that he was a massive prospect.” Sancho is expected to be named in the starting XI after Dortmund captain Marco Reus was ruled out of the last-16 first leg match with a thigh injury. Pochettino added: “Of course he is showing now in Germany that he can cope with the pressure to play in the Bundesliga or in the Champions League. And no, it doesn’t surprise me. His talent is there and he’s a very talented player.” The teenager, whose three goals helped England win the Under-17 World Cup in 2017, won his first senior cap for England against Croatia last October. Bullion Van Driver Runs Away With $1.13m The driver of an armoured bullion van disappeared early on Monday along with an estimated one million euros, police sources said. “When they came back out, the van and the driver were gone,” one of the sources said. The 28-year-old man had stopped in front of a Western Union office, outside Paris, at around 6:00 am (0500 GMT) in Aubervilliers, a suburb just north of the capital, and stayed behind the wheel as two of his colleagues went inside, police told AFP. “When they came back out, the van and the driver were gone,” one of the sources said. The van was found soon afterwards a few blocks away with its doors wide open, but the driver and the bags of cash, worth some $1.13 million, were nowhere to be found. The two other employees had not been injured, the source said. Loomis, the armoured van company, did not return calls seeking comment. An inquiry has been opened by France’s anti-gang squad. The last major such heist was in November 2009 when Toni Musulin fled in the armoured van he was driving with at least 11.5 million euros in cash collected from a Bank of France building in Lyon. Politics / ASUU Strike: No Resumption, No Election – NANS by pre5: 7:13am On Feb 07, 2019 |
ASUU Strike: No resumption, no election – NANS UNDERGRADUATES who are affected by the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, have vowed to disrupt the elections slated for February 16 if the three-month old strike is not called off. In a chat with Vanguard, the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS said the industrial action by both unions has not only hindered their academic pursuits, but it has also disenfranchised about 22.3million students who had registered at the INEC offices nearest to their institutions Its president, Comrade Danielson Bamidele Akpan said: ‘’The continuous strike action by both ASUU and ASUP has not only brought increased pain on students and their parents, it is now seen by us as a deliberate ploy to disenfranchise our members, especially those who registered within their school environments and are presently in their various home and are presently in their various homes. NANS Operation no resumption, no election “Consequently, Nigerian students have decided to take their destinies in their hands, enough of the politics being played with our future. “We wish to inform the general public that Nigerian students would resist any election from holding in any part of the country should our campuses remain shut till election date. He said the students are citizens of Nigeria “and on no account shall we allow this sinister disenfranchisement of the largest voting population of our citizens in a major election to pass due to no fault of theirs. We have 22.3 million registered students, eligible to change the destiny of the nation. We refused to be sacrificed in exercising this obligatory duty to our nation at this crucial moment. Our voices must be heard and our votes must count.” Akpan said: “After a careful observation of the continued insensitive shut down of our universities due to the strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics wish to unapologetically declare Operation no resumption, no election. Going down memory lane of the academic disruption faced by tertiary institutions in the last one year, Akpan said: “On 4th November, 2018, the Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on an indefinite strike which grounded all academic activities on our campuses till date. Prior to theirs, the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, had also embarked on same industrial action, shutting down all Colleges of Education. “NANS quickly swung into action requesting and forcing the Federal Ministry of Education, NCCE and COEASU to an immediate negotiation table while NANS observed the proceedings of the discussions for quick resolution. Compromise was reached and the strike action was called off without unnecessary delay of academic resumption. “However, after few days of COEASU suspending their strike, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics began theirs. Both ASUU and ASUP have since been on strike, forcing millions of our members to stay at home with possible consequence of disenfranchisement in the forthcoming general elections beginning on February 16th. “In solidarity, Nigerian students embarked on simultaneous nationwide protest across the 36 states of the federation with a mother rally at Abuja on November 19th, 2018. The rally was tagged: Save Education Rally across the federation, to create awareness on the state of education in the country, after which we presented a position paper of our demands to the Federal Government, the Press and general public. “Sadly, it appears that the gains recorded in the last few weeks had been eroded by the continued shut down of our schools and barely 12 days to commencement of the general elections. It is also instructive to note that the students’ constituency constitutes the largest segment of registered voters with 22.3 million as released by INEC. According to Sanwo-Olu who made the statement while hosting 2018 housemates of Big Brother Naija who paid him a courtesy visit at his campaign office in Ikoyi, the entertainment and tourism industries are key areas his government, would focus on for job creation and economic growth. “We have started a conversation with experienced practitioners in entertainment industry, with an objective to jointly come up with a general entertainment hub where talented young people can hone their skills in theatre, music, dancing and acting. We are looking at how the private sector can partner with us to build an entertainment destination where every Lagosian would be proud of. We are doing this to help the practitioners improve their creativity in film production, acting and entertainment generally. We hope this investment and effort would give our young people a new lease of life in terms of upgrading their skill and turning their skills to something valuable”, he said. Speaking further, he said he would deploy innovation and modern technology to unlock the potentials of entertainment and tourism, because an investment in creative industry would have direct impact on the economy and discourage restiveness among the youth. He advised youths to embrace hard work in preparing themselves for opportunities that would help realize their dreams. “Young people need to have the audacity to pursue their dreams, but they must have something driving them towards reaching their goals. What the government can do is to provide an enabling environment for their skills to thrive. This is what we are setting out to do if elected.” Source:http://www.toptipz.com.ng/my-government-will-boost-entertainment-industry-sanwo-olu/

FIFA partners Qatar to deliver 2022 FIFA World Cup The 2022 FIFA World Cup™ has officially entered tournament delivery mode after Qatar and FIFA announced the launch of a new joint venture to organise the event. The ‘FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC’ (joint venture) was unveiled as the body responsible for delivering the first FIFA World Cup™ in the Arab world after the nine-member management board met for the first time today (5 February) in Doha. The new delivery model will capitalise on the planning expertise the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) has built up since winning the right to host the tournament in 2010. Combined with FIFA’s extensive tournament expertise, this innovative model of delivering world football’s premier event aims to ensure an optimum World Cup experience for fans, players and officials in 2022. While the joint venture focuses on tournament delivery, the SC will continue to manage the development of event infrastructure, along with the various legacy programmes. H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, who will combine his role as SC Secretary General with Chairman of the joint venture, said: “The formation of this new joint venture comes at a strategically important time on Qatar’s World Cup project as we complete our various infrastructure projects, such as stadiums and training sites, and turn our attention to finalising the unique fan and player experience that Qatar 2022 will provide.” Al Thawadi continued: “I am confident that the combination of FIFA’s extensive tournament experience, and our own tactical experience and the nine years’ hard work already invested in the project, will ensure that the first FIFA World Cup in the Arab world is one of the best ever.” Nasser Al Khater, the SC’s Chief of Tournament Readiness & Experience Group and CEO of the joint venture, said: “Qatar’s World Cup project is entering its final phase and we’re all very pleased to launch this new organisation and collectively develop the best possible operational plans for 2022. “In less than four years’ time, we will be welcoming the participating teams and over one million fans to Qatar for the world’s biggest single-sport event. It is the work we do now which will ensure the experience we deliver is unlike anything previously witnessed at a tournament. I look forward to leading this innovative joint venture with FIFA and the work it will be undertaking in the years to come.” Creating a joint venture forms part of FIFA’s vision to create an organisation that streamlines the operational delivery of the World Cup. The management board of the new entity will be composed of FIFA’s Secretary General, Fatma Samoura, FIFA’s two Deputy Secretary Generals, Zvonimir Boban and Alasdair Bell, FIFA’s Chief Tournaments & Events Officer, Colin Smith, and FIFA’s Chief Legal Officer, Emilio Garcia Silvero, as well as the SC Secretary General, H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, SC Chief of Tournament Readiness & Experience Group, Nasser Al Khater, SC Chairman of the Operational Office and the Vice Chairman of the Technical Operational Office, Eng. Yasir Al Jamal, and QFA Vice President, Saoud Al-Mohannadi. FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura said: “Today we take a major step in the organisation of the biggest single-sport event in the world. Created in accordance with the FIFA President’s vision and together with our Qatari counterparts, the joint venture aims to reorganise the way we work at the operational front and avoid inefficiencies. I am convinced that this new approach to planning, delivery and legacy, always hand-in-hand with our colleagues based in Qatar, will help to ensure that the World Cup continues to be the most eagerly awaited event by billions of fans worldwide.” Colin Smith, Managing Director of the joint venture, said: “The continuous growth and complexities of a FIFA World Cup and the need for integrated involvement of all key areas across a host country has made it clear that a more efficient and optimised operational structure is required – this is particularly the case in Qatar, given the unique and compact nature of the tournament, both in terms of the opportunities and challenges that come along with it.” Smith continued: “The Qatar-based joint venture that will plan and deliver the next FIFA World Cup will work together with FIFA in Zurich as one team and combine, at all levels, the event experience we have there with invaluable knowledge from our colleagues in Qatar. It is a very important step, which shows how FIFA and Qatar are working together to deliver a successful and memorable event.” Prior to the first board meeting taking place, the nine-member management board were greeted by H.E. Crime / Court Strikes Out Evans’s N1bn Suit Against Police by pre5: 12:58pm On Feb 04, 2019 |
Court strikes out Evans’s N1bn suit against police Lagos – A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday struck out a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwamadike (a.k.a Evans), against the police over seizure of his property. Evans Justice Mojisola Olatoregun held that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the case. She said that the suit ought to have been filed before a Lagos State High Court where the applicant was facing charges of kidnapping. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Evans, through his counsel, Mr Olukoya Ogungbeje, filed the suit in June 2018 and joined as respondents, the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), the Nigeria Police and I-G’s Intelligence Response Team. The applicant prayed the court to declare that alleged forceful seizure of his property by the respondents without any court order was illegal and unconstitutional. He listed some of the property as N500 million, another N500 million, two residential houses located at Magodo, Lagos State, a Brigade wristwatch worth 20,000 dollars, necklaces worth 25,000 dollars and five pieces of diamond rings. Also listed are one Lexus 470, a Grand Cherokee, a Toyota Highlander, 85 Samsung television sets, 45KVA generator, 22KVA generator, 20KVA inverter worth N10 million and five set of freezers. The applicant had sought an order compelling the respondents to unconditionally release the property. Evans had also asked the court for an order compelling the respondents to unconditionally unseal and vacate without delay, the two residential houses located at Magodo. The judge noted that the respondents did not file any defence in spite of being served hearing notices. She, however, held that when confronted with a claim under the fundamental rights enforcement procedure, it would be important for the court to critically look at the reliefs sought. According to her, the main issue to be decided is whether the plaintiff’s claim constitutes a violation of his rights under the Fundamental Human Rights (Enforcement Procedure), adding that the right to own a property cannot be denied except for due process of the law. . She held that the applicant failed to show that the property were forcefully seized within the circumstances of his arrest. “The only conclusion I can draw is that the property were taken consequent upon his trial for kidnapping before the Lagos State High Court. According to the judge, although federal and state high courts have concurrent jurisdiction, the instant case ought to have been taken to the court where the defendant is facing trial for kidnapping. “This court must be careful not to interfere with due process of the ongoing trial of the applicant before the Lagos State High Court. “This court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain this case; same is hereby struck out,’’ she held. NAN reports that other prayers sought by Evans include an order compelling the respondents to apologise to him and pay him N1 billion as damages for the alleged forceful seizure of his property. He also sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from taking any action against him or any of his property in relation to this case.
