The problem with Peter Obi's position is that apart from a few points he may get for consistency, which rarely translates to electoral fortunes, his defense of subsidy removal is neither good politics nor good policy. Instead of answers, his supporters are shouting “APC is afraid of Atiku!” 😂Afraid of WHAT? An economic plan nobody, even atiku defenders can explain?

And this “Atiku will defeat Tinubu before noon” argument is even funnier.Presidential elections are won with VOTES ACROSS STATES, not confidence on social media. Show us the electoral arithmetic and, more importantly, show Nigerians the superior programme.

Nigerians may be hurting, but don't insult them by assuming hardship automatically means they will vote for whoever shouts “Tinubu must go.”

He has spent decades analysing how government policy affects Nigerian businesses. Even better, he has publicly criticised aspects of Tinubu's economic management.

SO THIS WASN'T APC REBUTTING ATIKU. It was something potentially more uncomfortable for Kenneth: AN ECONOMIST INTERROGATING THE ECONOMICS AFTER THE POLITICIAN HAD FINISHED THE POLITICS.

What followed was fascinating.

Kenneth said the subsidy-removal strategy was unsustainable. Muda said the reform trajectory should not be reversed —although government must improve implementation and cushion the pain.

Kenneth kept asking where the ₦15.8tn went. Muda explained that nearly 60% went to subnational governments, not Abuja. The precise figure is 5.4 Trillion to Federal , 10,4 trillion to states and local govt.

Kenneth treated increased borrowing as though it proved subsidy savings disappeared. Muda called that kind of analysis “simplistic”, explaining that government was simultaneously repairing collapsing macroeconomic fundamentals.

Kenneth dismissed improving macro numbers. Muda described the economy Tinubu inherited: severe FX shortages, rejected letters of credit and businesses unable to obtain dollars.

And Kenneth’s claim that falling inflation while prices rise is “voodoo economics”? That is simply a confusion between disinflation and deflation.

It was like watching somebody diagnose a patient— then, after he left the consulting room, the specialist walked in.

Muda did not say Tinubu’s reforms were perfect. Quite the opposite. His message was more credible: KEEP THE SURGERY. IMPROVE THE AFTERCARE.

Their allocations will only plummet and those ones who have taken on projects based on their expected monthly allocations will not be able to complete it.

There are also loan obligations by states based on this current allocation made only possible by fuel subsidy removal.

States will not only be able to complete existing projects but also their loan obligations.

What of the new wage bills ?

How will both the state and federal govts meet their new obligations to staff while still paying subsidy ?

There's no way in hell freezing over that subsidy can be restarted without heading the country straight to bankruptcy.

Let the common men benefit from dividend of democracy. All subsidy is removed - education, health-care, transport, electricity etc yet social amenities are floppy and messed, Nigerians pay so high to live in a country with so much endowed natural resources

2: subsidy requires an act of parliament, which senate or house members will pass a subsidy bill knowing full well their governors need the money and those governors control their fate? Some of you don’t understand many of these things are legacies from the military era. They are things that were created by military fiat! But just like creation of states, re-introduction of subsidies is almost impossible in a civilian regime.
3: Atiku will tell you anything to get elected, if he doesn’t remove the subsidy nothing will happen. He is not interested in reelection, all he wants is for the records to reflect he was president of Nigeria.
