geekybabe:
I dont like valentines day. Probably because it just reminds me of so many things in the past that I wish I could have done differently. I remember vividly the first valentines day I actually marked. It was an a friend who is now an ex, mr W. I remember he gave me a huge surprise that day. I came back to my room in the evening to meet a 10inch cake and a card. I felt like that was the best thing someone ever did to show me love.lol. My roommate also got two cakes, but I savored mine and dint want it to finish. Took bites from it till it started to get spoilt on my table some days after. Lol Puppy love. That was 5 years ago. I was in 500 level.
The following year vals day, I remember travelling down across 3 states to go celebrate Vals day with the same guy who bought me cake. It was my nysc year and there was some kind of freedom. I put my life on the line and after 7 hours, got to my destination around past 9 pm. Because I was in love. Or so I thought. I almost lost my life after that singular journey. Series of things happened, and It was from one nightmare to the other. He broke up with me eventually and i felt like my world crashed. I was miserable for a very long time. Because I really gave a lot in that messy relationship.

Adulting is just a very interesting journey. We misinterpret many things for love. Lust, Infatuation, obsession, Attraction, friendship, etc. In your mind you know what it is, but somehow you think you can convert it to love. And the truth of the matter is we are just never really sincere with ourselves in many of this situationships..
Attimes like me, you may be lucky. You see the truth and quickly walk out of falsehood. Other people live in denial and end up in marriages or situations that are outrightly irredeemable.
A couple of relationships down the line and I just started learning what love is. LOve is a beautiful thing. And Love is not just a feeling of butterflies in your tommy.
Again and again, love is a choice. A decision you make to be wholeheartedly committed to someone and you stick to it. Its not one-sided, its mutual. Of course there is chemistry, and all the mushyness, but there is also mutual respect and admiration for each other. Yes, its good to go for dates, have fun, and play and all. But there is a part of love that seems tough. The part of love that speaks out the blunt truth you dont wanna hear, the part that corrects you confronts your imperfections, the part of love that totally bares it all, including the bad and the ugly. This part is hard. You might even find yourself struggling with it. But the truth is, love is all of these things. Gradually you realise you are growing, and this person is truly bringing out the best in you. Its not one sided. Its both ways, cos iron is supposed to sharpen iron. Its not forceful. Nope. Amidst these is still patience, kindness, and sweetness, because this person only desires to see you get better every day.

you realise you are a better version of the person you used to be, And your partner is also a better person because you are inspiring them to better each day. You are not trying to change the person. You are both growing, and learning in love.

I give because I want to, not because the person asked. With what I have read about the tipping culture in the US, I would have a big problem living there. I have worked in the hospitality industry, and my focus has always been the customer's satisfaction, not on being tipped. If you tip me, obviously, I would collect, but it should be strictly voluntary.
Also, I don't believe in free money. I believe people should work for their money. The free money culture has enabled entitlement amongst our people. One of the reasons I support the removal of the subsidy and the new tax regime by Tinubu. Our people have to work for their money and manage it properly.

No free lunch.

Mention any Nairalander with his or her post that catches your attention. Here's mine:

The particular case I explained is not the fault of the parents. I know this family, and the parent did everything to make the daughter take on the trade, but she refused. She considered it low class.

Of course there are situations where the children are not groomed to take over, but in many cases, kids are just not interested to further their parent's business if it is not grown enough

If the restaurant is like chicken republic for example, the kids would all be willing to run it, but since it is small scale, they dont want it.

It is also this thing called ''exceptionalism'' that plagues most people. The idea that there is a perfect job in a huge coporation, that will connect them with other high class folks and they all roll together.

Same mindset of exceptionalism that makes a gambler believe he will be in luck and win, and it is others that will loose, or a poor girl thinking a rich man is waiting for her.

To be able to pursue your passion is a privilege, and most of us dont have it. If a person comes from a poor background, what he/she can do is to work hard, sacrifice himself, and pass the privilege of a cozy job to their offspring. Your kids might chase their passion if you put the foundation for that today.

Life is a ladder, and if you born in the lowest level, you dont have the resources to reach the extreme top, but you can reach half, then your kids reach the top. This is a sad thing to accept for most people, but a life of ignorance is worse, as it makes a person worsen their situation.

Parents have tried. They have reached half, oya take it higher, instead of dump it and go look for a job under another mans's structure that he has built, by probably inheriting it from his/own parents.

People are coming to realise that lots of social issues of today have been handled by previous generations, and are reverting back to it.

Either it is tech jobs, freelancing, self-employed, part-time, remote work, working from home, etc, all boils down to one single fact, and it is that people are tired of being employees under stagnant salaries that is constantly under attack by inflation, tax man, reduction.

Our parents might be uneducated, but they didnt pass through the challenges current generations are passing through. They may engage in small trade, but they operate outside the eyes of unfair taxations, control their time, not under rude boss, and their income was proportionate to their input, not stagnant.

The idea that you cannot turn eba for your family because you have to rush to work, but you can go buy same eba in a nearby restaurant for you boss. Are you mad? grin

Even worse, you are expected to be grateful for that, afterall, more idiots out there are waiting to replace you if you dare mess.

Even worse, some enter uni go study philosophy, mass comm, drama arts etc, like, are you normal? those courses are for Scandinavians students where they will live a wealthy life even if they didnt go to school, not for third worlders where your survival is at stake.

My Recommendation for You (as a starting point):
If you want quick earning potential → start with Web Development.
If you want job opportunities in companies → start with IT Support/Networking.
If you want future-proof, high-demand skills → start with Data Analysis.

To be fair to Marriott and others, operating a hote,l especially of Marriott status is very expensive in Nigeria. The multiple taxes, high import duties on products, and the big one - providing almost every infrastructure needed to ensure optimal performance. I deliberately did not include salaries, especially of senior expats who were transferred from elsewhere.

However, demand exceeds supply, which is why an extension is being built beside the current building, and another Marriott (whether it is the same Franchise owner, I don't know) is being built in Abuja. So, notwithstanding the room cost, market is booming.

FamilyRe: What’s One Thing You Realized Too Late In Life? Check Out Some Responses! by Premiumbuy(m): 2:54am On Aug 01, 2025
Wadoh:
One thing I realized too late in life is that peace is more valuable than being right.

I used to chase arguments to the finish line — needing to prove my point, defend my position, or correct others. But over time, I learned that the energy we spend trying to "win" often costs us peace of mind, relationships, and even time we can't get back.

Not every battle is worth fighting.
Not every misunderstanding needs clarity.
Sometimes, letting go is wiser than holding on — even when you're right.

Peace isn’t passive. It’s a powerful choice. And I wish I had chosen it sooner.
