Science/Technology / This MIT Robot Knows When It Screws Up, Just By Reading Your Mind by Premiumstech(m): 2:40am On Mar 07, 2017
The MIT has designed a humanoid robot dubbed Baxter, it can read your mind and respond to a thought if it is getting a given job or task right or wrong.

Baxter requires a human participant to wear an electroencephalography (EEG) monitor that records brain activity and can tell when that person thinks it is s------g up as it sorts objects. The robot can be shamed without even opening your mouth.

MIT set out to design a system that could actually respond to a person’s more natural, automatic responses to a robot’s actions. Specifically, Baxter focuses on brain signals called “error-related potentials” (ErrPs) that our minds generate whenever we notice a goof.

According to the director of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Daniela Rus, “As you watch the robot, all you have to do is mentally agree or disagree with what it is doing. You don’t have to train yourself to think in a certain way — the machine adapts to you, and not the other way around.”

Baxter is actually a multi-purpose robot from Rethink Robotics designed for industrial automation that MIT researchers hooked up to their mind-reading algorithm.

Right now Baxter can only handle binary “right or wrong” activities, but the research team thinks it could also be possible to control multiple-choice tasks via thought. Eventually, the system could be a foundation for fully controlling robots in more intuitive ways.

“Imagine being able to instantaneously tell a robot to do a certain action, without needing to type a command, push a button or even say a word,” Rus said. “A streamlined approach like that would improve our abilities to supervise factory robots, driverless cars and other technologies we haven’t even invented yet.”

This is a very wonderful invention, I believe it still needs proper security check to avoid the algorithm being altered and the robot abused.

Science/Technology / Discovery: Notion Change As Trace Of Water Found In Mars by Premiumstech(m): 2:30am On Mar 07, 2017
When it comes to life, after Earth comes Mars. Although it has been vehemently argued, Mars has been seen by Scientists and astronomers as a planet that will likely have life existance. The new research reveals that a mineral found in Martian meteorites – which had been considered as a proof of an ancient dry environment on Mars – may have originally been a hydrogen-containing mineral that could indicate a more water-rich history for the Red Planet.

A hydrogen-containing mineral known as whitlockite has been created by a group of Scientists at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). After shock-compression experiments on whitlockite samples that simulated the conditions of ejecting meteorites from Mars, the researchers studied their microscopic makeup with X-ray experiments.

The X-ray experiments showed that whitlockite can become dehydrated from such shocks, forming merrillite, a mineral that is commonly found in Martian meteorites but does not occur naturally on Earth.

Martin Kunz, a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) in the US said that “This is important for deducing how much water could have been on Mars, and whether the water was from Mars itself rather than comets or meteorites.”
“If even a part of merrillite had been whitlockite before, it changes the water budget of Mars dramatically,” said Oliver Tschauner, a professor at UNLV.

There could be possibility of life in Mars since the study shows that whitlockite can be dissolved in water and contains phosphorous, an essential element for life on Earth – and merrillite appears to be common to many Martian meteorites.

The pressures and temperatures generated in the shock experiments, while comparable to those of a meteorite impact, lasted for only about 100 billionths of a second, or about one-tenth to one-hundredth as long as an actual meteorite impact. Researchers blasted the synthetic whitlockite samples with metal plates fired from a gas-pressurised gun at speed of up to about half a mile per second, or about 1,678 miles per hour, and at pressures of up to about 363,000 times greater than the air pressure in a basketball.

Tschauner also said that the fact that experiments showed even partial conversion to merrillite in these lab-created conditions, a longer duration impact would likely have produced “almost full conversion” to merrillite. He equally added that this latest study appears to be one of the first of its kind to detail the shock effects on synthetic whitlockite, which is rare on Earth.

There are some sporting activities you crave for, but for the fact you don’t know how to learn it or be at the pro level of it, you become disturbed and discouraged. A Japanese electronics company Omron Corp have come up with a beautiful technology that can help you learn and master the table tennis sport. The tech which is a Robot is named FORPHEUS, the “first robot table tennis tutor”.

The robot has even earned a place in Guinness world records just because of its talented tutoring skills. Guinness World Record officials said the robot’s “unique technological intelligence and educational capabilities” earned it the title. The FORPHEUS uses vision and motion sensors to track a match, with cameras following the ball 80 times per second.

According to the developers who described the capabilities of the robot said that it can project an image of where the ball will land to help a competitor or student. It can also rate players and access their gameplay by using Algorithms and artificial intelligence.

The head of the developers, Taku Oya told the Guinness World Records that the company didn’t develop FORPHEUS to only teach the game of table tennis, but also to help “harmonize” the human-robot relationship. He equally said “At the moment it is a human who teaches a robot how to behave or teach, but in the next 20 years it may be possible that a robot teaches a robot or a robot develops a robot.”

Thumbs up to Omron Corp for coming up with such a record breaking piece of technology.

Science/Technology / Developed Rechargeable Batteries – Small Enough For Phones And Powerful For Cars by Premiumstech(m): 6:47pm On Feb 20, 2017
A set of rechargeable batteries might have just been developed by a group of Scientists, it is small enough for Phones and powerful enough for cars.

According to the Scientists, Sri Narayan and Derek Moy from the University of Southern California (USC) in the US, the batteries are alteration to the lithium-sulphur batteries and it will be a better competitor to the standard lithium-ion battery.
The developed alteration to the lithium-sulphur batteries by Sri and Moy is called the “Mixed Conduction Membrane,” or MCM. It is a small piece of non-porous, fabricated material sandwiched between two layers of porous separators, soaked in electrolytes and placed between the two electrodes. The membrane works as a barrier in reducing the shuttling of dissolved polysulfides between anode and cathode, a process that increases the kind of cycle strain that has made the use of lithium-sulphur batteries for energy storage a challenge.

The MCM also allows for the necessary movement of lithium ions, mimicking the process as it occurs in lithium-ion batteries. This novel membrane solution preserves the high-discharge rate capability and energy density without losing capacity over time. At various rates of discharge, the researchers found that the lithium-sulphur batteries that made use of MCM led to 100 per cent capacity retention and had up to four times longer life compared to batteries without the membrane.
Professor Narayan at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, said that “This advance removes one of the major technical barriers to the commercialisation of the lithium-sulphur battery, allowing us to realise better options for energy efficiency. We can now focus our efforts on improving other parts of lithium-sulphur battery discharge and recharge that hurt the overall life cycle of the battery.”

Lithium-sulphur battery has a lot of advantages over lithium-ion battery. The lithium-sulphur battery is cheap to produce with its materials readily available, two to three times denser, which makes them both smaller and better at storing charge. It is also lighter than lithium-ion battery.

Health / Antibiotics May Substitute Surgery To Treat Appendicitis by Premiumstech(m): 12:46pm On Feb 18, 2017
Using surgery to treat appendicitis in children and teens may become a thing of the past as antibiotics proves effective.

Incase you don’t know, Appendix is a small organ attached to the large intestine which is mostly seen as the storehouse for bacteria that aids the digestive system. It can become infected or blocked leading to an inflammation known as appendicitis. This inflammation is mostly experienced by children and teens, and usually treated through an operation to remove the appendix.

A new review of 10 previous studies of 413 children over the past 10 years who received non-operative treatment for appendicitis has found no reported safety concerns or adverse events related to non-surgical treatment. However, the recurrence rate of appendicitis was 14 percent in patients who received antibiotic treatment instead of surgery.

According to the author of the study, Nigel Hall, associate professor of pediatric surgery at the University of Southampton, he said “Acute appendicitis is one of the most common general surgical emergencies worldwide and surgery has long been the gold standard of treatment, but it is invasive and costly, not to mention extremely daunting for the child concerned and their family. Our review shows that antibiotics could be an alternative treatment method for children. When we compared the adult literature to the data in our review it suggested that antibiotic treatment of acute appendicitis is at least as effective in children as in adults.”

Professor Hall and his team weren’t alone on the study, they collaborated with researchers from St. George’s Hospital, Adler Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Science/Technology / A Device That Can Help Firefighters See Through The Smoke Developed by Premiumstech(m): 8:15am On Feb 18, 2017
A ground breaking small camera with thermal imaging software has been developed and will be attached to the existing mask used by firefighters inorder to enable them see thermal images on a micro-screen in real time. The sole purpose of this creation is to help save lives by giving firefighters more information in smoke filled environments.

Flint-based Taylor Dowding Innovation (TDI) designed the electronics, software and the system for transferring the data for Scott Safety, a leading manufacturer of personal safety equipment. The design and development of most parts of this camera started 9 months back.
According to Mike Stirling, the technical director, he said: “Hand-held thermal imagers can be quite a bit more costly so there is an opportunity for more fire fighters to have them and this is also completely hands-free, which is also beneficial.”

Scot safety, a company that manufactures personal safety equipment, said the technology was a cutting edge and could be integrated into each of the fire fighters’ masks and breathing apparatus “giving them back their sight and also feeing up their hands for important fire fighting tasks”.

This is an upvote to TDI for a job well done and also, for coming up with a beautiful innovation which will stand the test of time.

Science/Technology / Facebook's Standalone TV App To Be Released Soon by Premiumstech(m): 7:06am On Feb 16, 2017
This could be seen as Facebook indirectly getting into your home. The company has an agenda which is to make you watch its platform videos on your TV home screens. With this ‘about to be released’ app, it will start competing with the likes of YouTube and other traditional television channels in terms of advertising revenue.

The company plans to release an app that can allow its users watch the platform’s video content on television. With the app, users with smart televisions will be able to watch Facebook’s user-generated videos directly on their televisions. Facebook has said that the standalone app will be released “soon”.

This is a welcome development that will attract massive advertisement and of course much revenue to the company. But to make this work efficiently, it will need to offer programmes that are of a far higher quality than what is on Facebook right now. That will require big investment in getting top talent to make Facebook-only video. This new development is in line with the Facebook’s increasing focus on video.

According to the company, videos will now autoplay sound in the news feed and will be displayed in full, even if they are vertical. So many other features will be coming out with the standalone TV app.

Science/Technology / Research: Heading Of Football 'linked To Brain Damage' by Premiumstech(m): 6:59am On Feb 16, 2017
After proper investigation and research, Scientists have come to the conclusion that Repeated heading during a footballer’s professional career may be linked to long-term brain damage.

This was backed up when Researchers from University College London and Cardiff University examined the brains of five people who had been professional footballers and one who had been a committed amateur throughout his life.

They had played football for an average of 26 years and all six went on to develop dementia in their 60s. While performing post mortem examinations, scientists found signs of brain injury – called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in four cases. CTE has been linked to memory loss, depression and dementia and has been seen in other contact sports.
One of the Scientists involved in the examination, Prof Huw Morris, of University College London said “When we examined their brains at autopsy we saw the sorts of changes that are seen in ex-boxers, the changes that are often associated with repeated brain injury which are known as CTE. So really for the first time in a series of players we have shown that there is evidence that head injury has occurred earlier in their life which presumably has some impact on them developing dementia.”

According to Dr David Reynolds, at the charity Alzheimer’s Research UK, the public were meant to note that the causes of dementia are complex and it is likely that the condition is caused by a combination of age, lifestyle and genetic factors. He said that “Further research is needed to shed light on how lifestyle factors such as playing sport may alter dementia risk, and how this sits in the context of the well-established benefits of being physically active.” He added that for people who are recreational footballers, football injuries are unlikely to cause long-term problems and he pointed to expert advice that the benefit of exercise is likely to outweigh the risks.

With this concise briefing, heavy blows or hit to the head can lead to dementia which is mostly experienced by retired boxers.

Science/Technology / Passengers Receive Five Days Jail Term In China For Phone Use On Plane by Premiumstech(m): 7:54am On Feb 13, 2017
Science has made us to believe that radiations or signals from phone affect airplane navigation systems. And with respect to that, Chinese authorities insist that all Phones should be switched off during flight.

What played out could be seen as being ignorant of the law, which doesn’t save you from the law. Between January 5 and February 6, three passengers have been arrested for using their phones on planes.

The first passenger and victim, a woman named Zhang allegedly refused to turn off her phone during take-off and actually made calls during a flight. She was held in jail for five days.
The second passenger named Niu was also detained for a cell phone offense but got only three days.
The last person who perhaps the most unfortunate, a woman named Wang allegedly listened to music during take-off and landing. Wang also got five days, the maximum for a cell phone offense. Fine charge up to 50,000 yuan (around $7,265) can also be imposed.

They take this rule serious inorder not to put the lives of other law abiding passengers at risk.

Science/Technology / Research: See Why Women Are Better Dancers by Premiumstech(m): 7:46am On Feb 13, 2017
There is a popular saying that ‘anybody can dance,’ but there are better dancers when you talk about gender. Keen observation has shown that hip swinging and asymmetric movement of the legs was found to be the most attractive in a dancer.

Scientists at Northumbria University used motion-capture technology to record the movements of young women dancing to a drum beat. Their movement patterns were then rendered as 39 computer avatars – removing all their physical features – before 200 people watched 15-second clips and rated their dance moves.

The published study and report identified that those getting higher scores for their dancing exhibited three types of movement when they strutted their stuff – greater hip swing, more asymmetric movements of the thighs and intermediate levels of arm movement.

Report author Dr Nick Neave, associate professor of psychology at the university, said dance moves have two functions for women. He told The New York Times: “One is, they’re showing off their reproductive quality, perhaps their hormonal status, to males. “Another is, they’re showing off how good they are to female rivals. “When you look at males and females walking, the key difference is, males have this shoulder swing and females have this hip swing.”
He added that asymmetric limb movements could also signal good motor control.

Science/Technology / Security Check: Whatsapp Is Rolling Out Two-step Verification by Premiumstech(m): 3:14am On Feb 11, 2017
This feature is never to scare away its users but rather to make sure they have a safe WhatsApp account. WhatsApp is rolling out two-step verification to all of its billion-plus users, after debuting the feature in the beta version of the app last year.
The verification step can also be known as two-factor authentication, this optional feature adds an extra layer of security to users’ accounts.
To enable it, users need the latest version of WhatsApp and should then navigate to Settings > Account > Two-step verification > and Enable. Once this feature is turned on, users will have to enter a six-digit passcode every time they register their phone number with WhatsApp again. So, for example, if you get a new phone but keep the same SIM card and number.

WhatsApp’s authentication steps isn't like Facebook which generates a code with an app or sends one text message. You’ll have to remember your WhatsApp passcode, or you can set up a backup email, which will allow you to disable two-factor on your account if you ever forget your six-digit passcode. You can also disable two-factor from within the app, without a passcode.
And although you won’t need to use the passcode every time you open the app,

WhatsApp will ask you for it at a given time interval inorder to make sure you remember what it is.

Health / How A Cockroach Burrowed Into The Roof Of A Woman's Nose, Almost Near The Skull by Premiumstech(m): 2:59am On Feb 09, 2017
This is a very rare case and it is better imagined than experienced. It is not a new thing to have the sensation of something crawling into the nose but to burrow into the roof of the nose may be the worst case scenario.
A report has it that a 42-year-old woman who lives in Chennai, India, woke up in the middle of the night because she felt an odd "crawling sensation" in her head which turned out to be a real, live cockroach in her nose.

She further narrated that; "I could not explain the feeling, but I was sure it was some insect. There was a tingling, crawling sensation. Whenever it moved, it gave me a burning sensation in my eyes." The woman also complained of experiencing a severe headache and difficulty in breathing.

Being the normal step to take, she visited several clinics before the doctors found out the jaw dropping cause. The cockroach had "burrowed into the roof of the nose, almost near the skull base, which is the dividing point between the brain and the nose," Dr. M.N. Shankar, the ear, nose and throat physician who treated the patient at Stanley Medical College in Chennai, said.

To remove the cockroach, doctors in India first ran an instrument called an endoscope up the woman's nose, so they could see the insect. Then, they used small forceps and a suction machine to remove the bug. The doctors also took a video of their procedure.
It is now Advised to come for medical checkup anytime something wierd is felt in the nose, ears and eyes.

Science/Technology / The New Mig-35 Russian's Fighter Jet Could Sport Laser Guns by Premiumstech(m): 2:55pm On Feb 07, 2017
According to the report from National interest, it is of no doubt that the new MiG-35 could be armed with laser weaponry. In a conference call that the Russian president Vladmir Putin attended, Yuri Slusar, director of United Aircraft Corporation, extolled the MiG-35's virtues and stated the new fighter jet could support this weapons technology.

The MiG-35 is an improvement and upgrade of the 1980s-era MiG-29 "Fulcrum" multi-role fighter. Slusar stated that the MiG-35 was designed for "high-intensity conflict and dense air defence conditions." Slusar says the fighter has an all-new defense system, and its radar signature has been reduced several times over. It now has eight hardpoints for weapons, sensors, and fuel tanks, and its overall range has been doubled. Its radar can track up to 30 targets at once.
The MiG-35 is described as a "4++ generation fighter and not a 5th generation fighter like the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Russia plans to procure 170 of the new jets, starting in 2018.

Health / Looking For A Way To Whiten Your Teeth? See Effective Ways by Premiumstech(m): 8:03am On Feb 07, 2017
Nothing adds to beauty as white teeth. People with non white teeth find it difficult to talk and even laugh confidently without using Thier hands or something else to shade their teeth. You might be wandering what could be the cause but hey! things like tea, curry, tomato sauce and, of course, coffee have a negative effect on your teeth.

If yours is already non white and you want to start seeing positive changes, start eating cheese and carrots. Lactic acid that can be found in cheese decomposes food leftovers on your teeth, while the abrasive surface of carrots acts like some sort of sandpaper that brushes off all stains. Chewing orange peel can also help you to achieve your goal.
Another effective method is mixture of baking soda and water. All that is required of you is to mix together ½ teaspoon of baking soda with approximately same amount of water until you get a paste. Next is to apply it to your teeth with a toothbrush like you would any toothpaste. Do this for at least 2 minutes and proceed to rinse. Sure, this is not something you should do on a regular basis, but doing it every other day for half a month and then reducing it to once a week is completely harmless, while still being effective.
This tip may not sound a bit new to you, you need to upgrade your toothbrush, buy paste of better quality and seriously improve your brushing technique and see your true white color teeth radiating.

Health / Healing Benefits Of Spider Webs by Premiumstech(m): 2:41am On Feb 07, 2017
One of the things you wouldn't want to see hanging on your ceiling is webs. The spider webs are made from made from silk produced from the body proteins of the spider, turning it into silk through spinnerets. The spinnerets are located on a spider’s abdomen. Each spider has three or four spinnerets. Inside the spinnerets are numerous spigots connected to a single silk gland.
The processes involved in the formation of spider webs are; it first of all starts out in liquid form. As the material is being drawn out of the spider’s body, it begins to harden. This movement literally changes the structural components of the protein although can't be seen with the naked eyes.

Scientists have started tapping into the unlimited benefits of the spider's web, starting from how it will be of good use to close up wounds.
The practice of using spider Web to treat wounds didn't start recently. It started far back from the ancient Greeks and Romans, they use it to fast track the healing process of their wounded soldiers. They use the spider webs to close up the open wounds, thereby making it to dry faster. Cobwebs have antifungal and antiseptic properties that keep bacteria away, minimizing the chances of an infection. It works so well that cobwebs efficiently stop bleeding. What’s more, spider webs are high in vitamin K, a vitamin that triggers blood clotting! As long as the web is clean, it will not cause any infection or aggravate the wound’s condition at all.
Note this before trying it out, not all spider webs are safe for dressing wounds, there are poisonous spiders with poisonous webs. Also, If the spider web has hardened on your wound and it’s hard to remove, just run your wound over warm water. The water will loosen the web, making it easier to remove.
