The authorities of the University of Maiduguri have announced the resumption of lectures and all academic activities from Monday, next week. A statement signed by the Registrar of the institution, Alhaji Babagana Aji and made available to Daily Sun, said the institution’s timetables had been reviewed to squeeze lectures between eight in the morning and four in the evening. Meanwhile, the University of Maiduguri Student Unions Government had, in an advertorial placed in some dailies, apologized over the disruption of ASUU congress last December. “On behalf of the entire students of the university, the SUG sincerely and faithfully tenders its unreserved apology to the chairman and members of ASUU, UNIMAID chapter over the actions and behaviours of some students during the peaceful demonstration held on Wednesday, December 7, 2011. SUG is also sincerely tendering its unreserved apology to the management and staff of the university and any other persons who might have been directly or indirectly hurt as a result of the demonstration,” the advertorial signed by Dauda Mohammed and Adamu Galadima, acting president and secretary respectivel, stated.Bubakar explained that some students under the agies of the Students Union had disrupted the academic staff union congress last December, describing the act as irresponsible. He alleged that the students that staged a demonstration at the beginning of the recently suspended two-month old ASUU strike, kidnapped his 15-year-old son and damaged the vehicles of some staffers of the university. He also said the union had not been informed of the resumption of lectures on Monday. He said the decision was reached at the university Senate’s Special Meeting “to strike a safe balance between the institution’s routines and the curfew imposed on Maiduguri, as well as the daily traffic jams in the city and the sporadic gun battles being experienced.” However, the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Usman Abubakar said the lecturers might not go back to the classrooms contrary to the university directive.
