Rocktation: You sure are funny. So you really should know what you're talking about.Lol am a psychologist ;p |
Why Not {MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA512, SHA-3, etc}? These are all general purpose hash functions, designed to calculate a digest of huge amounts of data in as short a time as possible. This means that they are fantastic for ensuring the integrity of data and utterly rubbish for storing passwords. A modern server can calculate the MD5 hash of about 330MB every second. If your users have passwords which are lowercase, alphanumeric, and 6 characters long, you can try every single possible password of that size in around 40 seconds. And that’s without investing anything. If you’re willing to spend about 2,000 USD and a week or two picking up CUDA, you can put together your own little supercomputer cluster which will let you try around 700,000,000 passwords a second. And that rate you’ll be cracking those passwords at the rate of more than one per second. Salts Will Not Help You It’s important to note that salts are useless for preventing dictionary attacks or brute force attacks. You can use huge salts or many salts or hand-harvested, shade-grown, organic Himalayan pink salt. It doesn’t affect how fast an attacker can try a candidate password, given the hash and the salt from your database. Salt or no, if you’re using a general-purpose hash function designed for speed you’re well and truly effed. bcrypt Solves These Problems How? Basically, it’s slow as hell. It uses a variant of the Blowfish encryption algorithm’s keying schedule, and introduces a work factor, which allows you to determine how expensive the hash function will be. Because of this, bcrypt can keep up with Moore’s law. As computers get faster you can increase the work factor and the hash will get slower. How much slower is bcrypt than, say, MD5? Depends on the work factor. Using a work factor of 12, bcrypt hashes the password yaaa in about 0.3 seconds on my laptop. MD5, on the other hand, takes less than a microsecond. So we’re talking about 5 or so orders of magnitude. Instead of cracking a password every 40 seconds, I’d be cracking them every 12 years or so. Your passwords might not need that kind of security and you might need a faster comparison algorithm, but bcrypt allows you to choose your balance of speed and security. http://codahale.com/how-to-safely-store-a-password/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bcrypt |

Peterson1993: Yeah but it was named "nairaland hacked" before now. I was'nt blind. I don't even see any essence hacking nairaland in the first place if it was even the easiet thing to do. pc guru: that Mosync looks good, but mehn writing in C++, my neck is getting stiff a bit. besides Blackberry development is easier, does Mosync have access to Blackberry's API if so not bad.u cn also write in html5 nd javascript too... d initial plan was for my apps to be also used on my nokia phone too, so mosync lookd promising and d deployment was relatively straight forward and yea it also has access to dat... supported |
fink u shud take a look @ Mosync ... once used it to write simple apps for my bb 9800 without hassle its an OS-independent virtual platform and software development kit (SDK) for mobile applications |
does it matter ...depends on wht ur doin...i prefer laptops wid wider screen display so i can visualise my work better ![]() |
Peterson1993: Lol. Which nairaland you wan hack. You go grow bear-bear on top of your pcas stated...its just a theme...no hack sisqology: omo, guys dey vex o..... find a better job whats dis one sayin ![]() |

Seun: We use our own little template framework, which is a safe, lightweight wrapper around Python's str.format function. It consists of less than 20 lines of code. If I had to use a third party templating library, I would use PyMustache's "logic-free templates".nice...cool concept myself im geting used to jinja2 |
ukren: someone should help in writting Qbasic to input 4 number and their square root and cube root in a tabular form.10 INPUT "Insert A"; a 20 INPUT "Insert B"; b 30 INPUT "Insert C"; c 40 INPUT "Insert D"; d 50 PRINT a , a*a , a*a*a 60 PRINT b , b*b , b*b*b 70 PRINT c , c*c , c*c*c 80 PRINT d , d*d , d*d*d' ![]() |
just asking, when writing python codes, what templating language makes life easier for you? or do u stick to same python for templating? |

i modified to a custom version by editing some css ... to view it you have to install a chrome extension called stylish. This is the firefox extension (for firefox users), but i have not tried it on firefox yet as i use just chrome for surfing and firefox for deubging) after installing the extension, my style can be gotten from here. Enjoy No criticism pls, i only did this cuz i was bored(for like an hour or so) of the usual theme sha, so i decided to share...so if u can do better pls do and share ur own in this thread. to get info on the style elements and id, i suggest you use firebug(for developers)... |
