Politics / Breaking News: Donald Trump Is 45th US President-elect by princesweet: 9:04am On Nov 09, 2016
Donald Trump will become the next president of the United States in a stunning victory,

Donald Trump won the US presidential election early this morning in a stunning victory that sent shockwaves around the world.

The Republican took the key swing states of Florida, North Carolina and Ohio early this morning, as he marched towards the White House.

In an extraordinary development, Mrs Clinton did not initially concede the election – but then later called Mr Trump to congratulate him on his victory.
The Republican surpassed expectations and confounded pollsters in Florida, where Mrs Clinton had been expected to win following a surge in the Hispanic vote.

“This is a historic night,” Mike Pence said at the Donald Trump victory party in New York this morning.

“The American people have spoken, and the American people have elected their new champion. America has elected a new president, and it’s almost hard for me to express the honor that I and my family feel that we will have the privilege to serve as your vice president of the United States of America.”

Mrs Clinton’s hopes of a swift victory faded as the Republican picked up a series of states early on and maintained his momentum.

Politics / DSS, Police Tells INEC To Shift Edo Governorship Election by princesweet: 7:03am On Sep 08, 2016
Citing terrorist threats during the forthcoming Sallah celebrations, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police yesterday jointly asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone Saturday governorship election in Edo State.

At a joint media briefing, which lasted less than five minutes at DSS headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, police spokesman Don Awunah and Garba Abdullahi of DSS stated that the move became necessary because of intelligence reports about insurgents’ plans.

Abdullahi and Awunah, who read a prepared one-page text on behalf of the two security agencies, refused to take questions from reporters.

“The Nigeria Police and Department of State Services wish to inform the general public that credible intelligence availed the agencies indicate plans by insurgent/extremist elements to attack vulnerable communities and soft targets with high population during the forthcoming Sallah celebrations between 12th and 13th September, 2016.

“Edo state is amongst the states being earmarked for these planned attacks by the extremist elements.” Awunah stated, emphasising that the issue deserves to be treated with seriousness.

“The public would recall that similar threats were issued during the May Labour Day and Democracy Day celebrations as well as Eid-el-fitr holidays in July, 2016.

“However, security agencies were able to decisively disrupt and thwart the insurgents’ plan.

“In the same vein, while election is important, the security agencies cannot allow the peace of the county to be disrupted, and we will continue to remain vigilant and ensure consolidation of the successes gained in the current counter-insurgency fight.

“It is in regard of these that we are appealing to INEC, which has the legal duty to regulate elections in the country, to consider the need for possible postponement of the date of the election in Edo State in order to enable security agencies deal decisively with the envisaged terrorist threats.

“While the police/DSS remain mindful of the inconveniences this request may cause the various political stakeholders, it is our strong resolve that security agencies need not be distracted from ensuring a peaceful and secured Nigeria now and always,” he stated.

Both agencies requested that the public should complement security agencies’ commitment by being vigilant and report any unusual movements or actions by any group or individuals.

Politics / Only 5% Of N500bn Social Intervention Funds Released – Rep by princesweet: 6:57am On Sep 08, 2016
Three months to the end of the fiscal year, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Poverty Aleviation, Mohammed Ali Wudil, said the Federal Government has only released N20bn or about five per cent of the N500bn budgeted as social intervention programme in 2016.

The lawmaker spoke yesterday at a Civil Society Organisation, CSO’s engagement on monitoring
Federal Government’s Social Protection and Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs.

According to him, lawmakers are engaging the executives to speed up actions on the programme to ensure that citizens, who are supposed to benefit from it are not left to continue to suffer.

He expressed concern that the year would wind down in about four months without achieving any meaningful impact on the lives of the poor.

Wudil said over eight million Nigerians were expected to benefit from the N500bn social intervention, adding that apart from the social intervention, jobs would also be created by infrastructural projects that would be restored and the new ones that would soon be taking off.

“The huge budget of N500bn remained idle amid increasing socio-economic pressures on the would-be beneficiaries.

“Definitely, the office of the Special Adviser, Social Investments in the Presidency is facing challenges rolling out plans for the implementation.

“The huge amount that was allocated to the office needs to be justified, particularly now that poverty has gone so high in the country,” he said.

In her presentation, Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Social Investment, Mrs. Maryam Uwais, who outlined different Special Intervention Projects of the Federal Government, said it is designed for delivery under five sections.

These include the N-power, designed to help young Nigerians acquire and develop life-long skills to become solution providers in their communities and to become players in the domestic and global markets.

There is home grown school feeding for primary school children through locally sourced foods within the country; direct cash transfer of N5,000 monthly to targeted poor and vulnerable households, targeting one million people.

She also listed enterprises and empowerment program, involving financial inclusion and access to credit for market women, artisans, youths and farmers as well as STEM bursary program.

Also, Head Partnership and Local Rights Program, ActionAid, Suwaiba Jubrin, said the civil society is engaging the government to ensure that the program implementation is actualised. She observed that it was laudable for the present administration to invite the CSOs to participate in holding the government accountable for the project via monitoring and evaluations.

She lamented economic growth over the years in the country which has been bedeviled by inequality, increasing poverty and rising unemployment.
“Nigeria’s capacity to generate revenue to support pro-poor development has remained extremely limited,” she said.

Politics / Getting The Nigerian Economy Out Of Recession by princesweet: 10:09am On Sep 07, 2016
Nigerian economy is officially in recession

Nigeria officially entered into recession for the first time in more than 20 years as the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Wednesday that gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by 2.06 percent after shrinking 0.36 in the first quarter, Reuters reports.

This economic recession comes as no surprise to millions of Nigerians. Many say they've never known it so tough. The country has now seen two consecutive quarters of declining growth, the usual definition of recession.

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real gross domestic product (GDP), real income, employment, industrial production and wholesale-retail sales.

Crude-addicted Nigeria has been hit hard by the global fall in oil prices, which has reduced government revenues and driven inflation to an 11-year-high of 17.1 percent in July.

The slump in global oil prices has hit Nigeria hard. The government depends on oil sales for about 70% of its revenues but the crash has left the government cash-strapped and struggling to pay civil servant wages. The price of oil has fallen from highs of about $112 a barrel in 2014 to below $50 at the moment.

We have many contributors to this issue we found ourselves in; first of all, the maladministration of previous government at all lead to the situation we are in toady. For instance, they were predictions that the oil prices will fall and countries like United Arab Emirate (UAE) and Saudi Arabia started building their economy away from oil (tourism is a major revenue source), now their economy is now robust and energetic.

But the Nigerian economy is not that robust and we may blame the previous administrations, from the Military administration down to Obasanjo administration down to Jonathan administration. Also even now, the incumbent administration should also be blamed.

The road to this current recession started in 2012 when Nigerians refused to accept fuel subsidy removal, when the government continued to rely heavily on petroleum thereby putting a lot of pressure on the demand of the foreign exchange.

Remember in 2008 when we had global financial meltdown, Nigeria was not even aware that we had crisis then and this was because of the way the government of the day handled the situation. The country responded by bringing in the best economist on the table, they opened up discussions and used the best available methods and people did not feel it that much.

Goodluck Jonathan’s administration was marked with several allegations of corruption (which several of them have not been substantiated) and the allegations was that they billions of naira was stolen. But then, they were economist on board and that was the first time we had the co-ordinating Minister of the economy.

Jonathan knew that his brain was small to handle Nigeria’s economy, so he brought back people like Okonjo Iweala and people that know their onions when it comes to running Nigerian economy and he allowed them to work freely, he also give them leverage to come out with policies.

In 2015, President Buhari’s administration when we had the oil crash (slash in oil price), unfortunately we did not have the best of brains in government and they mismanaged the situation. Of course they inherited a lot of mess, but they worsen the situation. We have leaders in the present government who think that they are better than financial experts and you cannot run an economy as strong as Nigeria economy by the brain of one man.

Image result for nigeria recession statistics

Following enormous pressure, the government changed tack this summer, allowing the naira to float.

That's led to a spike in inflation, but the hope is that it will attract foreign investors. The government also says the country needs to import less: it wants to see more products made in Nigeria.

Nigeria isn't only hurting from low prices. Its oil output also fell sharply because of a series of rebel attacks on infrastructure. Other sectors suffered too, with manufacturing and retail hit by chronic power outages.

The slump in oil prices has drained Nigeria's foreign currency reserves. To stem the outflow of cash from the country, the government introduced strict restrictions on importing goods that it said could be produced locally. But that decision has reduced the flow of raw materials to the country's manufacturers.

"Much of the blame for this must fall on Nigeria's government. Import restrictions have crippled the manufacturing sector, which was long seen as a potential driver of non-oil growth," said John Ashbourne, Africa economist at Capital Economics.

Outside the oil industry, the figures show the fall in the Nigerian currency, the naira, has hurt the economy. It was allowed to float freely in June to help kick-start the economy, but critics argued it should have been done earlier.

The government, however, has found some positive news in the figures.

"There was growth in the agricultural and solid minerals sectors... the areas in which the federal government has placed particular priority," said presidential economic adviser Adeyemi Dipeolu.

Nigeria, which vies with South Africa for the mantle of Africa's biggest economy, is also battling an inflation rate at an 11-year high of 17.1% in July.

The suspension of services by Aero Contractors came on the heels of the ongoing economic recession sweeping through and crippling various sectors of the economy and bringing down supposedly viable and vibrant organizations in the nation. The suspension of operations has thrown not less than 1000 staff into the labour market that is already over bloated by graduates and other job seekers.

Not only airlines are receiving the hard knock of the harsh economy in Nigeria, giant oil firms, beverage companies, brewing firms, construction companies, government and financial institutions are not left out as the hard implication of the recession is telling hard on the firms, leading to mass sack of workers and reduction of earnings.

For oil giants, Chevron, Shell, the story is not different. By the end of 2016, Chevron revealed that it would lay off 8,500 staff in addition to the 1500 it announced earlier in 2015, according to a 2015 report. Shell had also revealed its plans to sack 10,000 staff and slash direct contractor positions in the company.

Mobil Producing Nigeria, operator of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation MPN/NNPC Joint Venture in Akwa Ibom laid off about 150 contract staff and 40 drivers from its employ, while Total fired 100 in its Nigerian operations. Other companies such as ExxonMobil, Total are said to have also sacked about 4,000 workers secretly in their global operations. This is a result of the economic crisis rocking the nation in the second year of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Due to the current economic recession in the country, most money deposit banks and insurance firms have slashed their workers’ salaries by between 20 and 50 per cent.

Investigations by Saturday PUNCH revealed that Diamond Bank Plc, Heritage Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, First Bank Plc and Wema Bank Plc have reduced their workers’ salaries as of August 31, 2016. This has also been confirmed by management sources and workers in the affected banks.

In the construction industry, not less than 65,000 workers have been sacked following the economic recession plaguing the nation. This followed their inability to meet up with their obligations to the workers as the recession hits the sector with over N600billion debt which the federal and state governments owe the sector.

President of Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI), Solomon Ogunbusola, explained that the 135 construction firms registered and operating under the association are being owed, a situation which has compelled some to lay off their staff.

Economic experts have pointed out that the full implementation of the federal government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy, which commenced in October last year, as a key reason for the current wave of job losses and economic mess weighing down the nation.

The policy mandates all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to remit revenue into a single account, thereby denying banks a cheap source of funds to transact business with customers. According to available figures, the policy led to MDAs pulling out N1.2 trillion, about $60 billion from commercial banks to the Central Bank of Nigeria. Also, over 20,000 accounts were said to have been closed as the process was speedily executed.

An economic expert, Anayo Nwosu, blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for the pains Nigerians are passing through at the moment. He listed certain actions of Buhari that added to the speedy recession of the economy. He identified the speedy implementation of the TSA as one significant cause of the recession.

He said the withdrawal of huge funds from the commercial banks reduced the ability of banks to grant loans to customers, thereby reducing money in circulation. Painfully, some banks had to stop funding projects halfway hence making completion impossible and resulting in bad loans. Though he agreed that the TSA was good, he faulted its speedy implementation.

He also blamed the stoppage of pipeline surveillance contracts and probing contracts awarded by the previous administration and suspending the amnesty programme to militants, saying that action gave the militants the excuse to go back to their arms and the sad reality is the blowing of pipelines and destroying oil facilities. This activity, he said, has affected the revenue from crude oil.

Too broke to pay for costly imports of rice and palm oil, Nigeria is looking to agriculture to help lift itself out of a recession.

The once-flourishing sector was abandoned during the oil boom but has the potential to grow as Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari pushes to diversify Nigeria’s economy.

Agriculture seems a good place to start. With 84 million hectares of arable land spanning the jungles of the south to the Sahara desert in the north, Nigeria can produce a range of food and cash crops for local needs and exports.

Today Nigeria’s food imports are estimated at over 20 billion dollars annually, according to the agriculture ministry.

A development economist and financial Expert, Odilim Enwegbara, who is the Chairman/CEO at Pan Africa Development Corporate Company (PADCC), said the government should leverage on its expansive revenue base and spend its way out of the recession.

He said: ”To help our economy, the government needs to pump trillions of naira into infrastructure projects and trillions of naira into social intervention policies so as to make more money available to the citizens to boost their purchasing power, which will make these cash-strapped citizens start consuming, not imported goods and services, but mostly locally made goods.”
By consuming locally made goods, Enwegbara said, more money will get into the hands of local people and artisans. This, he said, will kick-start the once excluded grassroots economy.

According to the LCCI chief, the energy issue has remained a sore point as a result of the poor supply and the high cost of gas, which in most cases is not available.

He said: “Economic empowerment of majority of our citizens by increasing the purchasing power of the economically excluded is the magic wand which increasing their consumer power should increase production and new jobs. In other words, if by empowering the marginalised and excluded millions deep-seated economic malaise will finally be resolved.”

The Vice President (North West Zone), Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Ibrahim Usman, said to move away from recession, the government must embark on infrastructure development to attract money into the system.

He said in other climes, the government drives the economy, giving it direction, but he admitted that there is no quick fix to get out of the recession.

Politics / US Congressman Accuses Buhari Of Autocratic Tendencies, Selective Government by princesweet: 9:03am On Sep 04, 2016
A member of the United States Congress, Tom Marino, has written a letter to Secretary of State, John Kerry, asking the US government to withhold security assistance to Nigeria until President Muhammadu Buhari demonstrates a “commitment to inclusive government and the most basic tenets of democracy: freedom to assemble and freedom of speech”.

He also asked the State Department to refrain from selling warplanes and other military equipment to Nigeria until President Buhari establishes a track record of working towards inclusion.

In a two-page letter dated September 1, 2016 and addressed to Kerry, a copy of which was exclusively obtained by THISDAY yesterday, Marino, a Republican from Pennsylvania who assumed office on January 3, 2011, said there were a number of warning signs emerging in the Buhari administration that signal “the man who once led Nigeria as a military dictator might be sliding towards former autocratic tendencies”.

The US Congressman, who is a member of the Committees on the Judiciary, Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs, and the Chairman, Sub-committee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law, said Nigerian government must “hold accountable those members of the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Military complicit in extra-judicial killings and war crimes”.

In the six-paragraph letter to Kerry, the US Congressman also expressed concern over Nigeria’s anti-corruption war, saying “of additional concern is President Buhari’s selective anti-corruption drive, which has focused almost exclusively on members of the opposition party, over-looking corruption amongst some of Buhari’s closest advisors. Politicizing his anti-corruption efforts has only reinforced hostility among southerners”.

His letter to Kerry reads: “Dear Secretary Kerry, I am encouraged by the personal interest you have taken in aiding Nigeria and its administration as it takes on endemic corruption, multiple insurgent movements, and a faltering economy. However, I believe there are a number of warning signs emerging in the Buhari administration that signal “the man who once led Nigeria as a military dictator might be sliding towards former autocratic tendencies.”

“I would urge the U.S. to withhold its security assistance to the nation until President Buhari demonstrates a commitment to inclusive government and the most basic tenets of democracy: freedom to assemble and freedom of speech. A logical start towards this commitment is for the Nigerian government to hold accountable those members of the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Military complicit in extra-judicial killings and war crimes”.

“Human rights groups like Amnesty International have widely documented torture, inhumane treatment, and extra-judicial killings of defenseless Nigerians since President Buhari took office.”

Quoting Amnesty International Report, he wrote, “in the last six months, Nigeria’s military has unlawfully killed at least 350 people and allowed more than 168 people, including babies and children, to die in military detention.”

He further wrote: “The Secretary to the Government of Kaduna State even admitted to burying 347 of those killed in a mass grave. And while President Buhari promised swift condemnation, his words rang empty. Instead of swift reforms, Buhari chose to reinstate Major General Ahmadu Mohammed, who Amnesty International revealed was in charge of the Nigerian military unit that executed more than 640 unarmed, former detainees.

“Also, in separate incidents concerning the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the Nigerian Army has killed at least 36 – the real number is likely higher – people since December 2015 in an attempt to silence opposition and quell attempts by the group to gather publicly.”

Describing President Buhari as a former military dictator whose reign (as military head of state) was cut short by a coup, he stated that the President has continually shunned inclusivity in favour of surrounding himself with advisors and ministers from the north of the country and the region he considers home.

“Of President Buhari’s 122 appointees, 77 are from the north and control many of the key ministries and positions of power. Distrust is already high in Nigeria and favouring Northerners for key appointments has only antagonized the issue. These appointments are also primarily Muslim in the north and Christian in the south, adding a religious aspect to long-held regional biases.

“Of additional concern is President Buhari’s selective anti-corruption drive, which has focused almost exclusively on members of the opposition party, over-looking corruption amongst some of Buhari’s closest advisors. Politicizing his anti-corruption efforts has only reinforced hostility among southerners,” he claimed in the letter.

He said the Obama Administration would advance justice by urging the Buhari Administration to act decisively to hold accountable members of the police and military.

The US congressman said, “This is a logical first step in making a demonstrable, sustained commitment to inclusive democracy, with distributed power in Nigeria. Until President Buhari establishes a track record of working towards inclusion, we ask the State Department to refrain from selling warplanes and other military equipment to the country.

“The State Department should urge President Buhari to form a government that represents the diversity of its citizens and allows dissenting voices to be heard. Democracy can thrive only if people are free to assemble, to express their beliefs, and voice their concerns.”

He is also checking out how it can improve on technologies in Africa. His first port of call was the CC Hub in Yaba area of Lagos state. Zuckerberg is in Nigeria for the “Facebook for Developers Workshop” for Nigerian engineers, product managers and partners in Lagos. The programme is slated for Wednesday, August 31.

Before coming to Nigeria Zuckerberg meet with Pope Francis in Italy. The Vatican said that Pope Francis, during a meeting on Monday with Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and Chief Executive, discussed how social media could be used for poverty reduction.

According to a post on Zuckerberg’s Facebook page, the CEO told the Pope how much he admired his message of mercy and tenderness, as well as how he’s found new ways to communicate with people of every faith around the world.

Telegraph UK reports that Zuckerberg had previously pledged to bring disadvantaged communities online, an initiative that is currently attempting to provide refugee camps with Internet access.

The news agency reports that an increasing number of users are turning to social media networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, to find their news, but Zuckerberg said his firm had no ambitions to become a content provider. “No, we are a tech company, not a media company,” said Zuckerberg, after a young Italian asked him whether Facebook intended to become a news website.

Jobs/Vacancies / Nigeria To Create 758,500 Jobs For Youth Through Agriculture, Says FG by princesweet: 5:55pm On Aug 30, 2016
The Federal Government says it will create jobs for over 758,500 youth across the country under the Youth Employment in Agriculture Programme (YEAP) to boost agricultural productivity.

Mrs Karima Babangida, the National Programme Coordinator said this on Tuesday in Katsina during the inauguration of Katsina State YEAP Steering Committee.
Represented by Mr Suleiman Aliyu, Babangida said that the three-year programme was supported by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).

Babangida said that 740,000 jobs would be `market-oriented’ for young agricultural producers, while the remaining 18,500 jobs were reserved for university graduates, ‘nagropreneurs’ across the nation.

‘’Under the market-oriented, 20,000 youths will be selected from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

‘’500 graduates will also benefit from the programme in each state of the federation,’’ she said.

The coordinator revealed that 12 states were selected for the first phase of the programme, two from each of the six geo-political zones.

Babangida explained that the programme was aimed at providing employment to teeming youths through agricultural enterprises.

Mr Rabe Isa, who spoke on behalf of FAO, urged the committee members to dedicate themselves toward achieving the set goal.

He said that Katsina was also selected for the study of grazing reserves and stock routes being conducted with the aim of addressing farmers/herdsmen clash.

In his remarks, the state deputy governor, Alhaji Mannir Yakubu said that the steering committee’s terms of reference would assist stakeholders to design and implement value chain development plans and promote young agro-entrepreneurs.

He said other terms of reference include the signing of contracts with service providers and beneficiaries, monitor the development of agro-entrepreneurs and commodity chains, among others.

Yakubu said the state government would continue to accord agriculture a top priority so as to address unemployment, diversify the economy and guarantee food security.

Business / Oil Market Re-balancing Could Take Until End Of 2017: Shell by princesweet: 3:16pm On Aug 30, 2016
The massive global oil oversupply that has weighed on Oil market prices for the past two years may not clear until the second half of 2017, Shell’s chief energy adviser Wim Thomas told Reuters.

The potential return to the market of some 1.5 million barrels per day of supply from Libya and Nigeria and uncertainty about Iranian and Iraqi production levels could push a re-balancing further away than many in the oil industry are hoping.

“All these things when they come back on the market can again postpone the true balancing,” Thomas said in an interview on the side-lines of the ONS oil conference in Stavanger, Norway.

He said the most optimistic scenario was for re-balancing, meaning that huge volumes of stored crude have to be absorbed, to kick in this year and that Shell was prepared for all outcomes.

“It can happen any time between the second half of this year and the second half of next year.”

Oil prices fell more than 70 percent from 2014 highs earlier this year and are still more than 50 percent below those levels as a fierce battle for market share between major producers has flooded the world with oil.

Thomas, a naval engineer by training, said three aspects could disrupt the current situation.

Oil demand from energy hungry nations China and India will be a key driver for oil prices, as well as the resilience of U.S. shale producers to weak prices.

Any Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) agreement to freeze oil production could also result in a sudden boost for oil prices, Thomas said.

Members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries will meet on the side-lines of the International Energy Forum (IEF), which groups producers and consumers, in Algeria on Sept. 26-28.

Politics / Niger Delta Avengers Cease Attacks On Pipelines by princesweet: 2:17am On Aug 30, 2016
The Niger Delta Avengers militants said last night that they were done with the hostilities. The group whose attacks have caused a huge dip in Nigeria’s oil exports, forcing the economy into a big crisis.

The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) broke the news in a letter posted on its website by its spokesman, Mudoch Agbinibo, and addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari. It also spoke of the need for regular dialogue to take place for the Nigerian union to survive.

Presidential spokesman Femi Adesina welcomed the cessation of hostilities by the Avengers as “a good development which is in the interest of the country and especially the Niger Delta people.”

He said “anything that portends peace is always good,” adding that “we hope that it cuts across board and it is sincere.”

The Avengers alleged that the Federal Government was out to execute a predetermined genocide against the people of the Niger Delta through the recently launched Operation Crocodile Smile, which the military high command has explained as just a training drill designed to prepare the Amphibious Division for a better mastery of the Niger Delta terrain.

The Niger Delta Avengers also observed that the Nigerian system would work better if the Federal Government learns from the developed democracies to allow internal protests and conflicts aimed at greater good of the nation.

“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to put away the garb of a stooge to the imperialists, whenever he speaks outside Nigeria. We have listened carefully and halted hostilities in the Niger Delta.

We expect a genuine and positive attitude to restructuring and self-determination for every component unit of Nigeria. Dear president, what makes those countries (Japan, Germany, France, USA, Britain etc.) great is the ability of their governments to accommodate internal protestations and conflicts for the greater good of their nations over the years.

“Nigeria is not a one-man personal property. We must have these talks every time if this union must continue to work as one. The people of the Niger Delta have been living here from time immemorial, so we have the secret of the terrain and survival of amphibious operations.

“No amount of troop surge and simulation exercises will make you win the oil war; you can only win battles. You cannot apply the might of the state to restore the people’s confidence in your leadership when you cannot differentiate between genuine demands and being mismanaged by disorganised characters and tribal lords around you in your government that are playing the court jesters’ role as well as counting the days that is left in your four years term.

“You can deceive the whole world but we cannot be deceived by the so glamorized ongoing military operations in the creeks of Ijaw communities in the Delta coded “ Operation Crocodile Smiles”… the world should knows that with your pronouncement in Kenya and your attitude to the military build-up in the Niger Delta, it is crystal clear that the military has nothing less than a pre-determined genocide in Niger Delta and burn more already scared national resources to the pockets of those that have failed to locate the missing Chibok School Girls.

“Please also tell those foreign nations that your troops are about carrying out extrajudicial killings in the Niger Delta in violation of Article Four of the Geneva Convention with “OPERATION CROCODILE SMILE”. All sane minds know the meaning of “ CROCRODILE TEARS” so by code-naming your military operation CROCODILE SMILES only betrays your motives and attitude to the whole world about the Niger Delta question.”

With an end to bombings, there is hope for increased oil and gas production, which will translate to more revenue for the Federation.

The militants in the last few months hit major pipelines including Shell’s Nembe Creek Trunk Line (NCTL) and Forcados terminal, ExxonMobil and Agip’s facilities. These attacks led to shut-in of various crude grades from Nigeria.

At the peak of the attacks, production dropped to 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd) against a budgeted 2.2 million bpd. Production had risen to 1.9 bpd before the renewed attacks.

Breaking: Nickel Discovered In Northern Nigeria

A private Australian mining syndicate is reportedly headed by Hugh Morgan, a mining industry veteran. Is said to have discovered nickel deposit in a town in the north which said to be over a hundred of kilometers from the country’s capital. Dangoma is a small farming community North-West state of Kaduna.
Report monitored from Australian national news daily, The Australian, the nickel balls, rumoured to grade better than 90 per cent nickel and thought to be a world first given their widespread distribution, offer the potential for early cash flow.

Nickel is a chemical element with symbol Ni and atomic number 28. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. It belongs to the transition metals and is hard and ductile.

“The nickel balls, rumoured to grade better than 90 per cent nickel and thought to be a world first given their widespread distribution, offer the potential for early cashflow from a simple and low-cost screening operation to fund a full assessment of the find that has exploration circles buzzing.”

However, details of the discovery are sketchy, according to the Australian national news, but the newspapers said, “the discovery is unusual because it is found in small balls up to 3mm in diameter of a high purity in shallow soils in what could be the surface expression of a much bigger hard-rock nickel field.”

Morgan reportedly said it was for the Nigerian government to make an announcement.

A formal announcement is likely to come in few days to come as minister for Solid Minerals, Kayode Fayemi will be among the speakers at a three-day Africa Down Under mining conference at Perth’s Pan Pacific Hotel, Australia, in September.

Mr. Fayemi is to speak first on Wednesday, September 7, while Mr Morgan will follow along with consulting geologist Louisa Lawrance.

It is said to oxidizes slowly at room temperature and is considered corrosion resistant. Historically, nickel has been used for plating iron and brass, coating chemistry equipment, and manufacturing certain alloys that retain a high silvery polish, such as German silver.

Jobs/Vacancies / 1.2million Nigerians Register For Fg’s N5000 Social Intervention Scheme by princesweet: 7:48am On Aug 29, 2016
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige has urged all unemployed Nigerians to register on the online job portal of the Social Intervention Scheme of the Federal Government in order to benefit from different categories of programmes which government is offering. The registration on the portal, Npower.ng.org, ends Wednesday, August 31, 2016.

This is just as he disclosed that only 1.2 million unemployed Nigerians had so far registered for the scheme.

The Minister made the call over the weekend while flagging off the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) School-to-Work Programme in Calabar, Cross River State.
“Unfortunately as we speak, by last week, the portal for the Social Intervention Scheme had only recorded about 1.2 million persons. We expect more persons to have been registered on the portal before our screening exercise. The portal closes 31st August 2016 which is just few days away,” Ngige said.

“ For those who are not computer literate, we advise state governments to encourage them by using local government chairmen to move into local government areas to register the unemployed persons there, so that they can qualify to be considered for the scheme. Each state of the federation is expected to recruit about 1,500 persons.”

Speaking on the School-To-Work programme, which he summarised as an expression of a renewed vigour by the ministry under him to catch them young, the minister said it was also a bold attempt to build a future Nigeria where white-collar jobs would be unattractive.

“ We are building a generation of Nigerians where creative thinking, self-confidence and dignity of labour will challenge the prevailing unemployment scourge,” he added.

We are building a generation of Nigerians who will not only create wealth with their hands but are proud employers with skills from hands that God has given them.”

“ This is two month vacation creative job learning scheme for students in JSS 1 to SSS 2 classes. It is meant to provide them with skills early in life so that they can graduate and earn a living if they wish not to continue after secondary education or have an income earning skill to fall back on while doing higher education.

This set of students will graduate to higher skills training the next vacation while others succeed them. By this, we are re-thinking a university education system where graduates fold hands and wait for food on their table,” Ngige said.

The Minister disclosed that a total of one hundred and fifty persons will be trained yearly from each of the states of the federation under the scheme which has Calabar, Anambra, Bauchi, Katsina, Kogi and Ondo as the headquarters for the six zonal training centres.

He added that the programme was built with enough provision for decent work in line with the International Labour Organisation so as to foreclose the possibility of child labour in the course of training and after.

Earlier in an address, the Acting Director General of the NDE, Mr. Kunle Obayan said the NDE was constantly preoccupied with providing initiatives that will address the ever changing forms and patterns of unemployment .

He added that the programme was designed to provide diverse vocational, agricultural and entrepreneurial skills training for secondary school students during long vacation, saying that the age grouping was the best peak to tackle youth unemployment with acquisition of skills.

Speaking when the minister earlier paid him a courtesy call at the Government House Calabar, the State Governor , Prof. Ben Ayade commended the minister for his foresight and innovative approach in tackling the scourge of unemployment in the country.

Admission into tertiary institutions to commence by JAMB.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it will soon commence the uploading of names of candidates who have been offered admission into tertiary institution on its official website.

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

According to him, the board will ensure that Nigerian children are not unjustly denied admission in any institution of their choice.

He said that the names of candidates that had satisfactorily met the admission rules and regulations of the institutions and that of the Federal Government would be uploaded soon.

“We have just concluded a five-day Technical Committee meeting on Admission that started on Aug. 22 at the Bayero University Kano.
“A lot was deliberated upon and at the end everything came out successful.

“We have ensured that the admissions are done in line with the set rules and regulations as provided by the Federal Government and the various institutions.

“We are aware that the function of admission of candidates is solely the job of the Senates of institutions and what we do as a board is to see the guidelines used in admitting the candidates and ensure ratification.

“We are passionate about ensuring that no candidate that meets any of the admission rules and guidelines as provided by both the institution and government is denied admission for whatever reason,’’ he said.

The Registrar of the board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, had at the opening of the meeting said that admissions would be carried out based on guidelines approved for each institution by their respective proprietors.

He also said that preference expressed for the institutions and courses by the candidates would also be followed.

Oloyede assured that the admission of candidates into the respective first choice institutions would be smooth.

John Kerry ‘met Christian and Muslim leaders in Nigeria’

Spokesman Larry Socha told the BBC’s Naziru Mikailu in Abuja that Mr Kerry had stressed the importance of religious tolerance during his trip to northern Nigeria.

In Sokoto, Secretary Kerry met with both Christian and Muslim leaders to discuss religious tolerance and counter violent extremism that affects all Nigerians.

And as the secretary said in his speech there, equality and tolerance, justice and mercy, compassion and humility – these are values that transcend religions, ethnicities and all kinds of moral codes.”

Mr Socha also wanted to stress that Mr Kerry had now visited Nigeria one three occasions altogether including trips to Lagos and Abuja.

Nigeria’s main Christian group accused the US secretary of state of fuelling ethnic and religious divisions during his recent visit to the country.

John Kerry had acted in a divisive and discriminatory way by visiting the Muslim north of the country, and meeting the Sultan of Sokoto and other northern leaders, the Christian Association of Nigeria (Can) said.

His “lack of respect for the heterogeneous nature of Nigeria, amounted to favouring northern Nigeria and Muslims to the detriment of the Christian community”

Rice will sell for N9, 000 before December, says Quadri

hairman, Alimosho Local Government in Lagos, Mr. Ganiyu Quadri, said on Tuesday, that the agro-business scheme run by the Lagos State government in Kebbi State will put an end to the high cost of foodstuff in the Southwest, Chairman, Alimosho Local Government in Lagos, Mr. Ganiyu Quadri, said on Tuesday.

Specifically, the council boss said the price of a bag of rice, which is N18,500, will drop to N9,000 before December.

Quadri gave the assurance while receiving a delegation of Rotary Club of Akowonjo 9110, led by its District-Governor, Patrick Ikheloa, and President, Shola Abidakun.

According to the council chief, the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in Lagos swung into agro-business to ensure food security for its people.

“By the end of this year, or first quarter next year, things will change in Lagos. Already, we are into agro-business in Kebbi State. We have massive land on which we planted grains, among which is rice, our people’s staple food. And it is expected that the truck-loads of rice will storm Lagos soon.

“So, I can assure you that before the end of this year, the price of a bag of rice, which is N18,000, will drop to N9,000.”

Quadri, who regretted the financial strains in which councils found themselves, said one of the mandates of sole administrators was to see how they could pay up debts owed by councils.

Earlier, the Rotary Club’s President, Abidakun, who said the club was welcoming its governor, Ikheloa, to the district, stressed the need for partnership between the Rotary Club and government organs in alleviating the people’s suffering.

The Rotary Club also visited the Akowonjo Health Care Centre and donated mosquito nets and other clinical facilities.

It visited Little Saints Orphanage Home in Akowonjo, also donating foods, toiletries, beddings and others to the children.

A baby girl was born during the club’s visit to the Akowonjo Health Centre. Abidakun named the baby, ‘Sholape’, meaning, ‘the child’s prosperity is complete.’
