Education / The Minority Interest By Igbinoba .o. Tony by princetizzy(m): 7:15pm On Nov 18, 2013
It is a principle of law that the welfare of the people is the supreme law. This piece is not to cast aspersions on any individual or groups but rather to tackle the catastrophic menace which has eaten deep into every sector of the country. Constitutionally and conventionally, the populace remains the most important segment of every society, therefore every decision or action affects the populace either directly or indirectly.

The Nigerian society of today has turned into a place where individuals or groups who are opportune to be in position of power whether in government, unions etc tend to use such power to fuel their lusts without making recourse or reference to the most fundamental doctrine of leadership which is to serve the interest of the populace. Hence, the people are at the receiving end of every hardship that flows from the ruling class which are the minorities.

I will narrow down this discussion and my case study will be on a trade union – Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). A trade union is a pressure group whose main objective is to fight for the interest of its members. ASUU has become the most popular union in the country this year as the strike embarked by her members on July 1st is now approaching the fifth month. After meeting with Mr President two weeks ago, the issue of negotiation has been brought to an end, furthermore from the outcome of all ASUU congresses held across the Nation, a resolution was reached that the strike should be called off.

The question on the lips of every Nigerian student remains thus, why is the strike still on? The reason why the strike is yet to end is beyond the comprehension of Nigerian students. The excuse for the continuation of the strike is the demise of ASUU's former president Prof Festus Iyayi who met his untimely death on his way to ASUU NEC meeting at Bayero University Kano. This frustrating event has frustrated millions of Nigerian students. We deeply sympathize with the family of the iconic professor and the entire ASUU family for this great lost but however it is painful to know that the vast majority of Nigerian students are not involved in this mourning session because from opinion drawn from students, they are not happy with the decision of ASUU to mourn for too long thereby placing the interest of one person in utmost priority over millions of students who are being delayed from achieving their dreams. Some students have passed away during this strike but nobody altered a word. Well I guess some people are more equal than others, like I earlier mentioned we regret the death of Prof Iyayi but it was stated in the bible when Jesus said let
the dead bury the dead, this should not be used as a yard stick to torture Nigerian students emotionally or otherwise. Due to the unions silence or better still inadequate disposition of information, people found it fun to deceive innocent students with false and fake news about ASUU NEC meeting. ASUU should honour the late Prof by calling off the strike and also create an avenue for students to join mourn this icon of the 21st century.

Finally from the look of things ASUU in one way or the other have the interest of the students at heart in clamouring for an improved learning condition which entails infrastructural development. But technically all the aforementioned only affects student’s pockets indirectly, as the infrastructural development will be enjoyed by both students and lecturers and most often than not, students will not have enough opportunity to access what was made available for their use. If this struggle is really for the interest and benefit of students as claimed, there should be a provision to affect students more directly and this can be made possible by reducing our school fees, at least the schools will not need the sums of money paid by students in the name of development levies.

To submit it will be pertinent to briefly identify the issue of trust as regard the 1.5trn to be released by the Federal government in five years and 200bn to be released installmentally every year in the space of five years, just like how ASUU have the fear in trusting the Federal government, that's the same way Nigerian students lacks confidence and trust in the university management to utilise the money for what its meant for. Its better we give all parties the benefit of doubt and allow time decide.

Failure occurs because of two reasons; Doing things without thinking about them and thinking about things without doing
them.

This letter is not to incite my fellow Nigeria students into violence but rather to a constructive thought and also to bring to your cognisance that though education is not made as of right constitutionally because of the myopic thinking of our law makers who negated section 18 of the 1999 constitution with section 6(6)(c) of the same constitution, but conventionally education is the foundation of every societal growth and must be treated with utmost serenity.

It is so disheartening to know that the present ASUU strike which started July 1st has lingered for too long and both parties are yet to fashion out any possible solution to this crisis which has crippled our educational sector. It is now a shame on a nation who claims to be the giant of Africa whereas about a million university youths are all sitting at home, roaming the society idle and vulnerable to anti social activities instead of being engaged in educational activities.

Let's take our minds to so many years back when education was sophisticated in Nigeria, when education was cheap, where basic amenities were provided like good hostels and well equipped libraries etc, where there was no ASUU (then AUT) strike to keep students longer in school than anticipated. My pain is that, the same people who enjoyed the good days of our educational system are now the ones responsible for the dilapidated state encountered by our modern day educational sector.

Sometimes I begin to wonder whether a father who had honey in his growing days will give his child bitter kola when there is a better and more refined honey available. Will it be reasonable to say that such a father is wise or foolish! Why have those in charge of our educational sector decided to upturn the biblical portion that says "the glory of the latter shall be greater than the former?"

We have cried in our hearts, we have prayed, our parents are complaining but yet no head way. They have negotiated in their selfish interest until they got mute, Suswam failed, Sambo has taken over. Where lies the solution? I can never be a part of the general proposition which postulates that when two giants fight, it is the grass that suffers it but rather I support the proposition that when a goat is pushed to the wall, it reacts. Nigeria students have been pushed tirelessly to the extreme and this is the right time for us to grab the bull by the horn, we cannot continue to suffer and smile, we cannot continue to sit at home idle, to tweet, hoping they become reasonable some day. This is the time for us to define their duties and obligations in case they have forgotten. This is the time for us to bring an end to educational instability in our Nation, the solution to this menace lies on us.

I enjoined all Nigeria students to return back to their various schools instead of roasting at home like corn, let's form a formidable team across the nation and embark on a peaceful protest but it should never get to the stage of destructive riot. Like I earlier stated, failure occurs because of two reasons; Doing things without thinking about them and thinking about things without doing them. It is often said that a closed mouth is a closed destiny, so therefore we have to talk for them to think, it is time to Occupy Nigeria once more

For us to get a responsive government, this is where I come in, this is where you come in, and this is where we all come in. In my favourite cliché "there is nothing wrong in Nigeria that cannot be corrected with something right in Nigeria" I believe in Nigeria and I believe in our future

Politics / 53 Reasons Why Nigeria Is Not There Yet By Igbinoba .o. Tony by princetizzy(m): 12:48pm On Oct 01, 2013
Things will eventually look up in Nigeria, maybe tomorrow or the day after that. But know that it will come someday. Our better day will come eventually.

Taking a peek into history, the name Nigeria was coined by Miss Flora Shaw; from the Niger River. Nigeria was colonised by Britain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Nigeria became a sovereign state on the 1st of October 1960 and became a republic three years later. However 53 years of our own self rule has been characterised with both military and civilian rule.

After all these years, we can all agree on one point, namely; that our dear country is still struggling. Many a cartoonist has captured this scenario in apt imageries of a giant with the lower limbs of a toddler. We have been asking why, and for the days to come, I forsee a lot more “whys” popping up. After all, our philosophy brothers say, the question is more important than the answers!

I have added my own voice to the whys, but I just did not stop there. I have found fifty-three reasons why we have not arrived at the “model-state” level in our democracy. The list is not exhaustive, but I find these contents very disturbing. I shall only throw more lights on a few, the rest is food for thought.

Now to the 53 reasons why Nigeria is not there yet:
(1) Corruption
(2) Religious crisis
(3) Terrorism
(4) Neo-patrimonialism
(5) Prebendalism (Patron - clientelism)
(6) Devaluation of our currency
(7) Years of Martial Rule
(cool Failed democracy
(9) Examination malpractice
(10) Ignorance of our fundamental rights
(11) Party politics
(12) Educational problem
(13) Misappropriation of public fund
(14) Dishonesty
(15) Security problem
(16) Poor road network
(17) High rate of unemployment
(18) Power failure
(20) Poor Health policy
(21) Money oriented ministers of God
(22) Kidnapping
(23) Inadequate disposition of information
(24) Failure to get and respect public opinion
(25) High cost of running the government
(26) Poor transport service
(27) Inadequate adaptation of  Science and Technology
(28) Election malpractice
(29) Over dependence on government
(30) Infrastructural decay
(31) Lack of innovation (over reliance on foreign products)
(32) Misplaced priorities
(33) Lack of management skills at the top
(34) Ethnic differences
(35) Over dependence on crude oil
(36) Division of the state
(37) Administrative incompetence
(38) Unequal allocation of revenue to states
(39) Food scarcity
(40) Women trafficking
(41) Inappropriate taxation
(42) Fraud
(43) High rate of illiteracy
(44) Witchcraft and black powers
(45) Emigration of Nigeria's best brains to other countries
(46) Cultism
(47) Child labour
(48) Incessant industrial action (strikes)
(49) Punctuality problem
(50) Judicial independence
(51) Inflation
(52) Patriotism problem
(53) Less prayers

To elucidate briefly on these reasons, it is pertinent to note that some of the setbacks inter-relate. You may jolly well forgive me for that for some of the problems needed to be specifically mentioned. The foundation of the Nation's problem is corruption; it is an abuse of position of trust in order to gain an undue advantage or willing to act dishonestly in return for money. Corruption has ravaged the whole system, it’s a global issue but its rate in Nigeria is unexplainable, is one thing for a state to be filled with corruption but willing to work towards perfection but it’s another thing altogether for a state to have corruption as a tradition. Some of the fore listed setbacks flow directly from corruption.

The government has in no small measure failed to meet its primary responsibility which entails provision of basic amenities such as electricity, good roads, education, health facilities, security, food, shelter to mention but a few. More policies are needed in this direction.

Religious problems has also weakened our development strength, religious groups that ought to be role models to the society seems to have lost focus. It is disheartening that our religious groups are responsible for the unrest that has taken thousands of lives in the country, instead of them to be preachers of peace. Our churches is now a money oriented place and pastors are now owners of private jets, expensive schools that is beyond the reach of the common man.

The rate of unemployment in the country is about 23.9%, the high level of unemployment has led to so many anti social activities including terrorism, kidnapping, fraud, cultism. It is written that an idle mind is the devils workshop.

Nigeria has failed in practising true democracy, according to Abraham Lincoln democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people. The sovereignty of every nation resides on the people but in Nigeria it is on the ruling class, with recurrent election malpractice, party politics, prebendalism (godfatherism). Thus jeopardising the doctrine of sallus populus est suprema lex (the welfare of the people is the supreme law).

Other pertinent issues include independence of the judiciary, where the third arm of government is not independently free to make court decisions because they are appointed by the executive arm and ratified by the legislative arm. Furthermore, high cost of running the government, Nigerian law makers are the highest earners in the world with about 240 million naira per annum in the upper champers and 204 million naira in the lower chambers. The president with large cabinet and even the first lady who has no constitutional recognition gets paid heavily.

Now to the problem arising from the citizens, Firstly ignorance of our fundamental rights embodied in the constitution (chapter 4 sections 33-46). A vast majority of the people are not conversant with their constitutional rights and the few that are aware of these rights still shy away from taking legal action when they are infringed upon. Secondly over dependence on the government for everything, even those within our capabilities because of the mentality that everything should be handled by the government. Thirdly lack of innovative ideas which leads to over reliance on foreign products has been the bane of the Nigerian government.

Its my favourite cliché that ''there is nothing wrong in Nigeria that cannot be corrected with something right in Nigeria''. Nigeria is 53 today; take a pause and ask yourself this question, is Nigeria failed nation at 53 or is it that we the leadership that has failed? This question should be answered in the negative. As a growing nation, it will be reasonable to observe that the country is not yet at the stage of comatose on the grounds that government compositions are still at least functioning. Furthermore the leadership of the nation is not completely a failure, they are doing their best but just maybe their best is not good enough for the day.

To have a better Nigeria we all dream about, corruption should be eradicated or reduced to its lowest, running cost of the government should be slashed down by 50%, equal attention should be given to other sectors of the economy, most importantly enhancement of human resources, Nigerians should also possess the right mindset towards its growth, that of good and not of evil  and finally prayers for the nation should be offered continually.

GOD BLESS THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA!!!

Things will eventually look up in Nigeria, maybe tomorrow or the day after that. But know that it will come someday. Our better day will come eventually.

Taking a peek into history, the name Nigeria was coined by Miss Flora Shaw; from the Niger River. Nigeria was colonized by Britain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. GOD BLESS THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA!!!

Education / The Festival Called ASUU By Igbinoba .o. Tony by princetizzy(m): 2:49pm On Sep 14, 2013
There is nothing wrong in Nigeria that cannot be corrected with something right in Nigeria.

This article is based mainly to analyse the role of education in the growth of Nigeria's economy, there has been a decay in the Nigeria educational system as there has always been a continuous rivalry between the federal government(political system) and ASUU(pressure group)

This article is not to praise or applaud either parties but to bring to the public the good, the bad,the ugly and the beautiful of Nigeria's educational system and to take a look at the way forward.

It is important to bring to your notice that section 18(1)of the 1999 constitution of Nigeria provides that Government shall direct its policy towards ensuring that there are equal and adequate educational opportunities at all levels. section 18(3) Government shall strive to eradicate illiteracy and to this end Government shall as and when practicable provide(c)free university education.

However this so wonderful provision of the constitution is non justiciable(section 6(6)(c) 1999 constitution) and therefore cannot be enforced by
an action in court. In other words, the government was
just thinking aloud when it included the provision!,Therefore it is at the mercy of the FG to provide any of
these necessities, and they cannot be held liable if they
fail to provide them. The Government has been very lackadaisical as regards the provisions of section 18 of the constitution, as a result, education is now taken as a second hand affair, forgetting the fact that enhancing human resources is far more important and better than even the so called natural resources. recourse should be made to japan or china whose economy is a force to be reckoned with in the world because of their level of human resources, the percentage of funds from the federal revenue allocated to education is so minimal as compared to other nations of the world. How can Nigeria be the giant of Africa when education cannot be adequately provided for rather our leaders jump into unnecessary issues. Is it that our leaders are not wise enough to know what ought to be done? Even the bible provides that woe to any Nation whose leadership is a child.

Now to the other side of the coin which is ASUU(Academic staff union of universities) before I go into the issue of ASUU stricto sensu, I shall briefly give an hilarious story.''A white man came to Nigeria and asked a student what is the meaning of ASUU, the student humbly replied by saying ASUU is a festival celebrated in Nigeria where students don't go to school''.

ASUU as we all know is a union group whose main aim is to fight for the interest of its members, the purpose of this body is to serve as an intermediary between the FG and lecturers of their member university for the good of fostering healthy educational system.

The most important weapon a union group uses in fighting for their interest is strike, this is something that is synonymous to ASUU. This weapon called strike has its own advantages and disadvantages, advantage towards the lecturers because it helps them get what they want and disadvantage towards the students because it makes our stay in the university longer than anticipated, a four year course turns into five year course because of the persistent break encountered due to numerous ASUU strike. It has now turned into a normal routine that ASUU must go on strike at every two years interval since 2009,later on in 2011 and now 2013, so how are we sure that they won't go on strike again in 2015,well I will be out of the university before 2015, the feeling of experiencing two long ASUU strike in 2011 and 2013 is not something to be proud of. It is so amazing to know that the striking parties will still get paid for the elapsed months due to the strike, thus getting paid for services not rendered. Due to this unending state of affairs students are now vulnerable to anti-social activities for it is written that an idle mind is the devils workshop.

It's september already and a month to october yet my friends who are in their final year, faculty of law in the university of calabar are all at home, their dreams of making law school this october is gradually going down the drain, I weep everyday in my heart knowing fully well that if they don't move, I too will not be able to move to the next level.

So many questions running through my mind now, what is the bone of contention between ASUU and FG? Is ASUU having also the interest of the students at heart in this struggle? The Nigeria students are suo moto involved in this struggle, for anything that will not benefit the interest of the students is nothing, according to ASUU the issue on ground is for the full implementation of the 2009 agreement between both parties.

Firstly, improved working condition, which entails infrastructural rehabilitation, briefly put this will also improve fast and comfortable learning condition for students. Finally increment of their salary, it seems like
our lecturers no longer want their rewards in heaven.
Who can blame them? After all, narrow is the gate... one thing is sure that increment can only be available to deserving hands, have they been fulfilling their obligation of appearing in class regularly? Do they want money for a job not adequately rendered? A man that takes the glory for a job not done is a sinner in the sight of God.

Why will ASUU fight for their pocket alone forgetting that students are supposed to be entitled to remuneration also no matter how minimal it might be. What makes a university? Simply put the lecturers and students, if they get paid for impacting knowledge into us, I see no reason why we also should not get a little allowance for helping them grow in their area of specialisation, for without us there will be no them vice versa,so therefore we compliment each other. If you think it’s a
lie, what makes them lecturers if not the availability of
students?

To bring an end to this scorpion eating up our educational sector, this is the way forward

The federal government should provide ASUU with all they want so they can go back to the classroom but an unbiased panel should be set up as watch dogs which will comprise of both lecturers and students to check mate any lecturer that will not give 100 percent performance of his or her duty as a teacher, any lecturer found wanting after investigation shall be summarily dismissed( do your job in order for you to keep your job).I believe this will be able to eradicate bribery otherwise known as blocking or sorting by greedy lecturers.

Most importantly every leader should have love and compassion for the people they lead, if our leaders truly have this undeniable love towards us they should adhere strictly to section 18 of the 1999 constitution and the oath of allegiance they took before assuming office. A law should b passed that there should be compulsory admission of all off-springs of our leaders in any varsity located in the constituency they represent, this law will foster equal educational opportunities in accordance wit section 18 of the 1999 constitution. With this policy our leaders will learn how to do the right things at the right time, this burden of numerous ASUU strike is too much for the masses to handle alone.

Furthermore section 18 of the 1999 constitution should be amended and moved from chapter two to chapter four(fundamental rights) education should be our right and not a privilege, because education is the back bone of all nations economy in the world.

A word of advice for those piloting the affairs of this Nation, the question you should always ask yourself is not ''will my calender be full but rather what will fill my calender''. To ASUU do your job in order for you to keep your job.

To my fellow Nigeria students I promise you all today that we will surely be taking over soon, so I indulge you not to pack in the packing lot of our leaders. we are the hope for tomorrow; we should not talk ill about our country. To get the responsive government and a Nigeria we all dream of, this is where I come in, this is where you come in, this is where we all come in.

we cannot raise Nigeria up by calling her down... GOD BLESS THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA !!!

In other words, the government. was Just thinking aloud when it included the provision!,Therefore it is at the mercy of the FG to provide any of these necessities, and they cannot be held liable if they fail to provide them.

To get the responsive government and a Nigeria we all dream of, this is where I come in, this is where you come in, this is where we all come in.

calender”. To ASUU do your job in order for
you to keep your job.
To my fellow Nigeria students I promise
you all today that we will surely be taking
over soon, so I indulge you not to pack in
the packing lot of our leaders. we are the
hope for tomorrow; we should not talk ill
about our country. To get the responsive
government and a Nigeria we all dream of,
this is where I come in, this is where you
come in, this is where we all come in.
we cannot raise Nigeria up by calling her
down… GOD BLESS THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC
OF NIGERIA !!!

THE FESTIVAL CALLED ASUU
The Government has been very
lackadaisical as regards the provisions of section 18 of
the constitution, as a result, education is now taken as a second hand affair, forgetting the fact that enhancing human resources is far more important and better than even the so called natural resources. recourse should be made to japan or china whose economy is a force to be reckoned with in the world because of their level of human resources, the percentage of funds from the federal revenue allocated to education is so minimal as compared to other nations of the world. How can Nigeria be the giant of Africa when education cannot be adequately provided for rather our leaders jump into unnecessary issues eg the senate wanting to enact into law child marriage.
It is barely four days to september and a month to october yet my friends who are in their final year, faculty of law in the university of calabar are all at home, their dreams of making law school this october is gradually going down the drain, I weep everyday in my heart knowing fully well that if they don't move, I too will not be able to move to the next level.
