Actually I was planning to have a new laptop and since Apple has released a new laptop I will surely have this one..

I will also prefer 3GB or more as using 1GB laptop for programming will make your laptop processing slow and when you are programming then you need to have fast results but 1GB laptop will not serve this purpose. Sometimes even the software that you will need for programming takes much space so even they make your system work slow.

HP 620 will be fine.

No matter whatever you learn but just excel in that. Learn any language but learn it properly.
I have started with C, then C++ and then I learned Java and after that .NET..
Some of the basic concepts are common for all but syntax varies in all of them. But still I suggest you to start up with .NET as amongst all the programming languages that I have done, I liked .Net very much as it is easy to use and I enjoyed working on .Net framework.
