*Movie Reviews: Dunkirk, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets*

There are war films, and then there's The War Film. 'Dunkirk' is the latter. In 1940, the beaches of Dunkirk become an entrapment when the 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers are boxed in after the Germans advance into France. The terse orchestration among the ground, air and naval forces - and civilians too - that is the rescue mission to evacuate the Allied troops is what the film plays out.

'Dunkirk' though, is not about bombings and warfare, so much as it is about the perseverance of the human spirit tethered to political agendas. The French and British troops on the beach are fighting the same war, but their animosity won't slide away. There is heart in every sub plot that your own would beat loudly to.

Nolan's masterpiece is not one to be watched and forgotten, but to be experienced and empathised with. But lest it stumbles in doing that, Hans Zimmer's haunting music will shell shock you. Not to say this lightly, but 'Dunkirk' stands out in Nolan's and Zimmer's oeuvre.

This film is visual war poetry. It's the crescendo in the opera. The grand masterstroke

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets


It's the 28th century, special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are part of the galaxy's task force. Now, they must identify the danger threatening the peaceful city of Alpha, before the menace rocks the entire universe.

Besson's work is a graphical gem, visual and visceral. Only, the director has his heart invested in building the city and not so much the stories. The film is his tribute to the Franco-Belgian comic 'Valérian et Laureline' - in fact, he seems almost reluctant to shift focus from the galactic canvas he's painting to Valerian, the hero who's to save it.

As an antidote to the ever expanding marvel of these fascinating places, Besson does introduce several sub plots but they're all met with abrupt endings- the plots feel episodic at best. Yes, the audience is left wishing that travel through space and time to visit Alpha was possible, but a trip to the theatres to watch the film? Not so much.
