Most likely there was a catastrophic miscommunication. Many possibilities...Possibly the plane was tuned to a different frequency from the one the Ethios were on. These things arent uncommon in aviation, and under the right circumstances (like 1 in a million) the plane will be shot down. Happened in Russia, Ukraine, Iran, and many other places. Personally I dont blame the Ethios at all, so long as they up their game and learn to work with local Somali authorities instead of commandeering the place.
