Hi all, this thread is for male healthcare professionals working in UK or USA. My experience has been that sometimes you need to be extra careful in this field because of a myopic perception based on appearance.
An incident occured at work yesterday and quickly deteriorated to a police matter hence this post.
1. Take notes always: on every shift, have a notebook to take notes of everything that's happening and document any behavior that's inappropriate or aggressive.
2. Avoid unnecessary touching: When providing care always be careful and seek permission in physical contact especially with patients that are alert and oriented.
3. Always introduce yourself: On night shift please be careful to introduce yourself to your patients ahead of time so they are not startled when you enter their rooms.
4. Avoid oversabi: It's possible you know more than a lot of people you are working with, however it is important to have insight in this regard, as always trying to show you know more might lead to something else!
5. Don't sleep: On the shift avoid sleeping at all times. Some strategies are coffee, cold water head wash and standing up. Whilst this is not a crime, it could lead to problems of your patient is high risk.
6. Avoid anything sexual: Jokes, innuendos or comments of a sexual or gender nature are a black hole these days and a lot of people will press charges they feel anything you said or did affected them.
7. Smile: This may sound strange but trust me, as a Nigerian man -especially if you are on the tall side with a good build, smiling will create a non- threatening aura around you.
8. Time your breaks: Set your alarm during your lunch breaks and leave five minutes ahead so you don't get back to work late.
9. Report everything if you are uncomfortable: Don't remain silent of anything happens on the job- don't overlook any matter as small especially if it involves a patient making comments etc.
10. Avoid if possible being unnecessarily in the patients room especially in night shifts and with the opposite sex.
