@ovamboland thank you so much for that sermon, it seemed to silence all these bickering kids (hehe). We the present generation have found ourselves lumped together as one naija, one naija we shall remain till ...(maybe boko put us asunder). We should learn to take it easy with each other, no tribe is a super-tribe. I was just about to say when ibos come for NYSC in akwa-ibom, 90% of them will find a way to stay back after service year. Same goes for d yorubas. And I get angry momentarily when I think of all the filth and rowdyness this trend will result in, but then I shurg my broad shoulders and keep smiling. We should look beyond this tribal sentiments and hate, mehn! I know amazingly wonderful ibo, yoruba, hausa people. It's about the INDIVIDUAL now, capish?

she kept doing her job till she died. has it not ended in "eyahh" "pity""so sad""she was brave","you died so that we may live","you are an icon","god bless you sister"

how many of you give a hoot what she earned there?

how many of you have suggested what govt should do for her family?

you are quick to remember she was doing what she was trained for but very slow to review THE CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH SHE WORKED.

was she a government employee? I thought someone already pointed out she was working in a private clinic. abi should government also fund private clinics in Nigeria for peace to reign? why are we fighting ourselves like this? this is exactly the reason why we can't take a stand as one voice to resist tyranny. everyone feels they r the superior specie of Nigerian. and for the one who said other health workers ran away from Sawyer cos they lacked the mental capacity to handle him, are you for real? a midwife probably birthed you at home. how do you measure intelligence? omg.

Please tell me Pharmacist don't know anything too. That we Just dispense the drugs according to da docs prescription plan.. Loool.. glad Pharmacy has got a faculty of it's own and not under the Medical sciences.

My friend did his internship at LUTH and der was this incidence he gisted me about. A prescription came in for him to attend. It was written by a 'consultant' and when he was done screening the prescription, he noticed grave therapeutics errors. He then sent a stapled note back to the doc to review the prescription..and ds doc who claims to be all knowing sent the patient back and told him that if the pharmacist refuses to dispense the drugs, he should tell him. My friend just did the simplest thing. Went up to the consultant office, the consultant was so arrogant because he had Hs fellow consultants all sitted there. He just told the consultant, pleases counter sign this prescription and I will dispense it as soon as I leave your office. Guess what, the consultant never did and evn askd him what was wrong and he should suggest what changes needs to be made.

Now that is the attitude of an average doc. Do they evn know drugs? How many docs can convert international units to million units? And dey wear ward coat parading everywhere. Soon they will say only docs shd wear ward coats in the hospital. Who are they to say no other profession shd be called consultants and 'dr'. Bunch of eediots!!

A consultant prescribed salbutamol tablets for my friend who went to him to complain of P.I.D. I was in awe of him, so to speak, when she showed me the prescription.

lets just stop decieving ourselves in this naija. everyone is corrupt. if you are not, you just havent had the opportunity yet to exhibit it. and secondly, it is not just the health sector that needs revamping. every single godtdamn sector is important and in need of repair. working as a state counsel in the ministry of justice, you have to go to court and handle sensitive cases. where are the libraries the govt should have provided to aid research how many law journals or reports does my employer, mr government ,provide? how much am i even paid monthly to start with? we should all rise up and protest and get sacked. or we make do with what we have and in honour of fela, keep on suffering n smiling . till God sends his angels to deliver us. i rest my case. una welldone oooo, my brodas n sistas.

no, we are our problem in this country. a friend of mine graduated from university after studying chemistry. we were trying our hands on job opportunities in our respective fields when her parents came up with the idea that she return to school and study medicine. i wont mention how much they spend yearly on "sorting" lecturers to ensure she dosent drop out. lol, in d end my friend will graduate and start wondering where all the money is to be made and start spitting venom on the govt.

PointB: Before we get swayed by the doctors tantrum, let's not lose sight of their 24 key demand.

Summary of the doctors demands:

1. Create more offices (and more money) for us
2. Don't send anyone to monitor the money
3. Skip level 12, we can't wait to collect more money
4. Refer to Nos 2
5. Pay us 22 years areas of some money, and then increase our wage
6. Expand the health bill so we can make more money
7. Appoint one of us surgeon general so that he can protect us and fight for our money
8. Adjust our level so that we can make more money
9. Increase our call duty allowance by 90%
10. Adjust upward our specialist allowance
11. Increase our hazard allowance from 5k/mnth to 100k/mnth
12. Release circular showing our allowances, all of us must be included
13. When we need to import In-Vitro Diagnostics, IVDs equipment, we don't want knowledgeable institution to check/license it.
14. Tell us our retirement age (obviously they don't want to retire, more money to be made in active duty)
15. We want more funding for our residency training
16. For peace to reign pay our colleagues in Owerri what you agreed
17. We must continue to enjoy the goodies in IPPIS platform
18. Attempt to prevent our collective bargaining (for more money) will be resisted
19. Lab scientist should stop intimidating us (we are the big boys, we make more money)
20. Stop short paying us for any reason (we want all our money in full)
21. Do for us what they do for doctors abroad
22. Set aside more money to furnish our offices (hospitals)
23. Medical director must be a medical doctor (It can not be a pharmacist, dentist, and never a lab scientist). We must chop alone
24. Stop violating our 2009 agreement. Pay us our money!!

There you have it. The two dozen demands of our doctor in plain language. The demands causing our brethren to die at home, and in hospital while doctors stay away. These are the demands making our people to resort to bathing and drinking salt water to death, as they run scare of Ebola Virus Disease, while our doctors prefer to stay at home and wait for their money.

Our doctors have sworn to protect their moneys, while our collective health is the ransom! If gold can rust, pray, what will happen to Iron?

nuff said!
Health / Re: Government Vows Not To Recall Sacked Doctors by provenus(f): 10:58am On Aug 17, 2014
allycat: When there were residents, patients in my clinic were already getting 6 months appointment and that is because 4 doctors including house officers, residents and consultants were seeing about 140 to 200 patients in a clinic day. It used to be double that number but we cut down when we realised all we were doing was just surface consultation and quick examination nothing thorough. Even with the present number we are hardly able to fully examine every patient (it would take about 30 minutes to do a decent history taking and examination). The house officers can't do much being a specialist clinic and the consultant can only see a few patients because he or she has to review cases with the residents and teach medical students while the clinic is going on. So now what will happen is the number of patients we see a day will reduce even further, appointments will now be longer year to 18 months. Surgeries will be reduced because only the consultants can operate , senior residents especially used to do most of the minor to intermediate cases and some major cases under supervisiona, while the consultants do the major cases and supervise the residents that way one consultants surgery list could have up to 10 cases in a day because he had assistance. More patients will definitely be referred either to private clinics or abroad. Imagine a hospital that has 5 consultant anaesthetist and that is a large number for a teaching hospital oh. Everyday they have about 10 surgeons from different specialties operating, prior to the sack of the residents the residents would gas the straight forward cases while one consultant anaesthetist supervises like 5 or 6 of them and then personally handle complicated cases. So definitely the rate of surgery will fall and really major cases like those which take 8 to 12 hours will no more be done.At least me I won't dare, it's only a mad man that will start what he cannot handle.
Imagine the neurosurgeon or cardiac surgeons who are usually one or 2 in a hospital running clinic and they now have an emergency. shocked Ghenghen clinic will be cancelled and if the same thing happens 2 or 3 times in a month the backlog will be unimaginable.
Let me be watching this cinema cool cool it's going to be bloody.
Or maybe we should just close down the teaching hospitals and send our medical students to Ukraine and India after all in India residency is done in private hospitals and they haven't died yet.
And the doctors have been on strike for weeks now. And nigerians in their usual manner have found a way to adapt and survive. I have several family and friends who are resident doctors, but for God's sake, the fact remains, they left their jobs and swore never to go back unless and until all their demands are met and implemented. Implied-if it takes govt 100 years to meet our demands, so be it, we stay at home till then. Why then the outcry following governments decision to lay them off? Did the poor and helpless Nigerian not find a way to adapt these past weeks? After, they will say nigerians hate doctors, this one is jealous of doctors, that one wishes he studied medicine. LOL.

most of you here ranting have doctors you all call on phone when ill. these same doctors you are crucifying will still answer those phone calls and even tell you what drugs to take FREE OF CHARGE! please name another group of professionals that will give you free consultations.
is it the lawyers
is it the engineers
is it lecturers

na wa o!
I'm a barrister, and I do pro-bono work all the time. Free consultation ain't no crime. That said, In my humble opinion, I think it's foolishness for the 'doctors ' to keep commenting and responding to insults from half- illiterates (aren't we all? )! Maintain your elevated stance as king of the jungle (health sector)! If government in all her wisdom or foolishness decides to terminate residency program, retreat and wait till they come begging. Bantering words on the pages of nairaland will avail nought! The battle for the soul of Nigeria will not be fought in this generation. Shebi we are doing 'siddon look'!!!
