Camp opens this weekend Chief coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi, has shortlisted 24 home-based players for camping ahead of this month’s 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Harambee Stars of Kenya in Calabar, Complete Sports can confirm. Keshi who led the Eagles to a resounding victory at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, released the 24-man list yesterday afternoon and is expected to make public the list of the foreign-based players on Friday. “I am expecting 24 home-based players in Abuja for camping to kick start our preparation for this month’s World Cup qualifier against Kenya which is a very crucial match,” he began in a brief conversation with Complete Sports yesterday evening. “Most of the players that make up the 24-man list are those that have been in the team before. So I decided to recall them to see what they can do because as I said earlier, we are still rebuilding the team and we are going to give 'new' players the opportunity to show what they can do. We just want to see whether they 'll come out good." “The list for the foreign-based players will be out on Friday and they also are expected to report to Abuja to join the home-based players before we depart for Calabar a week before the game,” he explained. The Super Eagles lead their World Cup qualifying group with four points from two games. A 1-0 victory against Namibia in Calabar and another 1-1 draw against Malawiin Blantyre puts the reigning African champions in pole position. www.completesportsnigeria.com/details.php?news_id=11178 |

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi dedicated Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat of Ethiopia to his countrymen. The Super Eagles earned passage to the quarter final through two late penalty goals courtesy of Victor Moses. Keshi spoke after the game that is was not an easy encounter against the East Africans who were returning to the tournament for the first time in 31 years.A lot of respect for the Ethiopian team because it is a quality team. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy because they love to play football just like we like to play,” said Keshi. “This victory is a victory for Nigerians. It’s something that I’ve been waiting for so long to make Nigerians everywhere in the world happy.“ Nigeria will next play giants Cote D’Ivoire in the quarter finals next Sunday. It is a challenge which Keshi anticipates will bring out the best in his team. “Taking on Cote D’Ivoire is a different ball game, it is a different mentality – everything is different because it is not going to be the same as preparing against Ethiopia or the last two teams we played against,” he said. The coach also praised the effort of Enugu Rangers midfielder Sunday Mba who madehis first start in the tournament against Ethiopia. “Mba was wonderful, he played so well and I’m happy for him. We’re trying to introduce young players that Mikel, Yobo and Enyeama can direct them on the field. “What we’re looking at is not just the Cup of Nations but how we will be able to build a very outstanding team for Nigeria in the next five years,” Keshi said. www.goal.com/en-ng/news/4687/2013-africa-cup-of-nations/2013/01/29/3710912/stephen-keshi-its-a-victory-for-all-nigerians?source=breakingnews&ICID=HP_BN_1 |
so whats ur take on keshi's and d zambian goalkeeper |
Eagles Coach Defends Chelsea Star Over Penalty Miss Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has insisted that there was nothing wrong with the decision to let Mikel Obi take the penalty against Zambia last night. Mikel has not been a prolific goal scorer for both club and country and some question the fact that he was allowed to take the penalty against Zambia. But Keshi defended his decision, claiming that any other player could have missed like Mikel did. “It’s not fair to say Mikel shouldn’t have taken the penalty,” Keshi said. “He scored a penalty against Liberia in Calabar, so he could have scored this one too. Penalties do not have specialists and anyone can score or miss. Scoring and missing penalties are part of the game.” Keshi also took a shot at Egyptian referee Grisha Ghead for the penalty decision that led to Zambia’s equalizer. “I don’t like speaking about referees much, but today I’m not sure that should have been a penalty. It was a big game and the referee had to be sure before giving a penalty. But we move on; the referee has taken his decision and we can’t do anything about it.” Meanwhile, Zambia keeper Kennedy Mweene has admitted that he did not save Mikel’s penalty, that the ball bounced off the base of the upright into touch. The referee had given a corner kick to Nigeria after the penalty miss, giving the impression that Mweene had made a second penalty save in a second straight game. “To be honest, I never touched the ball,” he said. www.completesportsnigeria.mobi/readNewsItem1.php?nid=2583 |

The Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa, Amb. Sonni Yusuf, has expressed satisfaction with the facilities at the disposal of the Super Eagles for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Yusuf told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Correspondent in South Africa on Wednesday in Johannesburg that the team got the best hotel allocated to it. ``I must say that the Super Eagles, of the four teams in the group, have the best facilities; the hotel has two standard training pitches located within its precincts. ``We also intend to meet with the LOC on the issue of accreditation for key government officials to have access to the team and to discuss other logistics required for the team. ``The hotel that the team will be staying in was used for the 2010 World Cup and is still in very good shape; it is located in a secluded area of the town, with heavy security,’’ Yusuf said. He added that the mission had notified the Nigerian community in South Africa to come out en masse to support the Super Eagles. ``In the area of support for our team, there will be no problem at all. Nigeria has one of the largest immigrant populations in South Africa. ``The proximity of Mbombela to Mozambique, where we also have a large Nigerian community is another advantage for us. ``So starting from Thursday when the team will arrive in South Africa, the huge support of the Nigerian community in South Africa will be felt,’’ Yusuf said. www.completesportsnigeria.mobi/readNewsItem1.php?nid=2492 |

Nigeria’s opponents in the first group game of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, Stallions of Burkina Faso, will not have two of their top stars on parade when they come face-to-face with the two-time African champions in Nelspruit on Monday January 21st, Complete Sports can confirm. The duo of midfielder Alain Traore and Charles Kabore will not be available for selection and the situation will be a big setback to the team that are desperate to secure a favourable result against Nigeria in their first game of the competition to boost their chances of making it to the knock-out stages. According to the report, Traore is currently nursing an injury and despite the fact that he has started running as a positive step toward his return to full fitness, he has been completely ruled out of the first match. The team medics will however access his condition ahead of their second game of the tournament against Ethiopia on January 25 while central midfielder Kabore will also miss the game against the Super Eagles due to cards accumulation he was carrying from the qualifiers. The Super Eagles who rounded off their preparation for AFCON in their Faro camp yesterday with a 5-0 spanking of a Portuguese second division side, Farense, in a warm-up game are expected to land in South Africa later today.Nigeria’s opponents in the first group game of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, Stallions of Burkina Faso, will not have two of their top stars on parade when they come face-to-face with the two- time African champions in Nelspruit on Monday January 21st, Complete Sports can confirm. Super Eagles first choice goal-keeper,Vincent Enyeama says that he will be so overjoyed if Nigeria win the 29th Africa Cup of Nations trophy that at the final whistle on February 10 he will strip to his underpants. "It will be a dream come true and I am certain I will strip to my shorts. Yes, let everyone hear it that I will strip to my shorts if we are champions". Enyeama has been very consistent since he became Nigeria's undisputed first choice goal-keeper just after the 2002 World Cup in Japan/South Korea. He was in the teams that played at the 2004 to 2010 tournaments where the country got to the semifinals in all but the 2008 tournament where incidentally, Austin Ejide was Berti Vogts first choice. Enyeama regained his place after Vogts departure and was arguably Nigeria's best player at the 2010 World Cup. The Israel based player wants to keep playing for a while yet. "I aim to keep playing until I am 40. If possible into my 42nd year even. I work hard,I am focused and if I do as little as I did against Rottredam in more matches then I can easily play that long". Asked if the team was under pressure to deliver the trophy to Nigeria again since 1994,he says: "Personally I do not think we are looking at the trophy for now. We want to win the first game, then the next and then the one after that". "Nigerians should have faith in us, believe the best of us and pray for us. It is not beyond our abilities to win the competition with God on our side" Enyeama concludes. www.completesportsnigeria.mobi/readNewsItem1.php?nid=2489 |
explosion at Arepo, Ogun State on Sunday. The bodies, which were found in the swamp around the explosion site, had little sign of burns. Even though the fire had reduced when our correspondents got to the scene on Sunday, emergency workers said the situation was still precarious as there was need to completely put out the fire. Spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim Farinloye, said evacuation of the bodies would begin later on Sunday. He said, “Our assessment show that more bodies will still be inside the swamp. This is why we cannot give a specific number of casualties at the moment. “Two of the bodies found seemed to have floated up from the water. It is likely that more bodies may float later. But we will start the recovery of the bodies found as soon as Red Cross officials and medical team of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation arrive.” Farinloye said there was a technique that could be applied to make the bodies of other casualties that had sunk in the water to float. He, however, explained that it was necessary for the state in which the pipelines were domiciled to contribute to tackling the menace of vandalism “instead of shifting blames.” “The state is expected to mobilise traditional institutions and residents, who know the terrain to assist in intelligence gathering,” he said. Deputy Manager, NNPC, in charge of Pipeline Rights of Way, Mr. Obinna Otuu, explained at the scene that the repair of the damage on the pipeline would take less than a day. “Fuel supply through the damaged point has been shut off since Saturday, but the repairs will be concluded before tomorrow (Monday). So, there won’t be any fuel scarcity,” he said. Otuu, who is in charge of all pipelines in the South- West, said fuel marketers might start hoarding fuel to create scarcity if the pipeline was not repaired on time. Amosun blames NNPC Meanwhile, Governor Ibikunle Amosun, visited the site on Sunday, putting blame on the NNPC. Amosun had initially been prevailed upon by aides not to go to the explosion site on arrival at Arepo for security reasons. But he insisted on seeing things for himself after a batch of security agents had gone to assess the situation. The governor said the swampy nature of the terrain had made it nearly impossible for security agents to work effectively and urged the NNPC to provide equipment that would aid them in carrying out their duty. He said, “This (explosion) is clearly due to failure of governance. NNPC by its inaction is aiding and abetting this and I want to believe it is part of pipeline vandalism. “How can this local canoe, for example, be used by NNPC to protect a billion-dollar investment? Even if the place is combustive, can’t solar-powered boats be used? “If NNPC supports us, we will get the whole place cleared and if we’re given between five and 10 swamp boogies, we’ll clear this place, erect platforms and install electronic devices. We will put up the CCTV and also have a control room that will monitor the place. “How can vandals hold us to ransom? Just look at dead bodies littering everywhere. It took us 45 minutes to access the place. I even understand that it is the same spot where the three NNPC officials were killed last year.” He stated that it was necessary to invest in security of oil facilities since oil is the bedrock of the nation’s economy. Vandalism is an emergency – Rep In a related development, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Mr. Dakuku Peterside, has called on the Federal Government to make increasing vandalism of the nation’s pipelines a national emergency. In a release on Sunday, Peterside said vandalism had a far-reaching implication on the nation’s economy. He said, “The issue of pipeline vandalism must be treated as a national emergency. Its relationship to joblessness and poverty in the land is worrisome “My grievance is with those who vandalise the pipelines and I condemn in strong terms the sponsors and perpetrators of this evil. Pipelines are used all over the world to distribute petroleum products; therefore Nigeria should not be an exception.” He called on security agencies to intensify efforts in protecting oil facilities. Also speaking on the recurrent tanker fire incidents along the dilapidating East-West Road, the lawmaker called on the relevant authorities to hasten the completion of the road. Arrested suspect dies One of the suspected pipeline vandals, who was arrested on Saturday after the explosion has died. According to police authorities, the deceased, Sunday Reuben, sustained severe burns but died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital on Sunday. The deceased was also implicated in the murder of three officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation last year. Father of the deceased, Hakeem, is also standing trial for the same offence at a Federal High Court. Reuben, who was arrested alongside a medical doctor, Odusina Adegboyega, had told journalists shortly after his arrest on Saturday that he was involved in the illegal operation. He said, “I was in my house when Suleiman my friend called me that there was a job at Arepo creeks. He asked me to look for a canoe and come with as many gallons as I could carry. Shortly after I arrived, I saw people arguing and fighting. I suddenly heard a gunshot. “Immediately the gunshot went off, there was an explosion, I was lucky that I wasn’t close to the ruptured pipeline. It was the heat of the fire that affected me. I managed to run to my boat where my mother was waiting. My mother called a doctor who was about taking me to the hospital when we were arrested by the police.” Confirming the death, the officer in charge of Inspector-General of Police Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit, Friday Ibadin, said another suspect was in the emergency unit of LUTH. He added that three suspects were arrested. It was reported that the explosion occurred on Saturday as a result of the activities of pipeline vandals at Arepo. Three engineers of the NNPC were killed by suspected vandals in the same location in October 2012. www.punchng.com/news/arepo-bodies-of-vandals-float-on-creeks/ |
The Super Eagles continued its buildup for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa later this month with an amazing display of attacking football to overwhelm Dutch side, Sparta Rotterdam 1-0, in Faro, Portugal on Saturday afternoon. The game which was played at the Browns Sports and Leisure Club, where the Eagles are presently camped ahead of the Afcon started on a cautious not for both sides, but it was the Eagles which featured skipper Joseph Yobo pairing youthful Kenneth Omeruo, who was impressive in the heart of the defence, that seized the initiatives just five minutes into the encounter. A combination of Efe Ambrose and Ahmed Musa found Nosa Igiebor at the edge of the box, but he blasted wide. In the 10th minute, Mikel Obi combined beautifully with Igiebor to free Emenike, but his shot was again wasted. Mikel again did a yeoman’s job in the 14th minute to send Emenike clear and he promptly tucked the ball into the net but Dutch referee for the game Wim Bronsvoort ruled it offside. From then on it was one way traffic as the Eagles seized control of the game but Igiebor, Moses, Emenike and Musa somehow managed not to score and the half thus ended goalless, to the chagrin of Stephen Keshi, who thought his wards should have at least been two goals up by then. The Eagles continued from where they stopped in the second stanza and in the 55thminute, Ambrose Efe combined beautifully with Musa, who dribbled his way into the vital area before laying the ball for bulky Emenike to riffle home for what turned out the only goal of the encounter. After the goal Keshi made eight changes to his team with Ejike Uzoenyi coming in for Victor Moses, Gabriel Reuben for Mikel, Ike Uche for Emenike, Sunday Mba for Nosa Igiebor, Brown Ideye for Musa, Ogenyi Onazi for Yobo, Nwankwo Obiorah for Ogude Fegor and goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim for Vincent Enyeama. The Dutch side did threaten a couple of times through dangerman, Donovan Deekman spotting number 11 jersey, but it was dealt by Enyeama and later by Agbim. Infact, they took only one straight shot at goal that was easily pick up by Enyeama at the start of the second half. The Eagles continued their dominant play even with the changes but Ideye, Uche, Reuben and Mba failed to increase the tally, to keep the scoreline at only 1-0, after 90minutes. Rotterdam coach, Michel Vonk, said he was delighted with the robust, attacking play of the Eagles, adding that if they keep it up they will go far at the Nations Cup. “Your team play physical and quick and at times they slow it down and before you know it they are all over you. I told my players that is what to expect and we were not disappointed. Their quality is very good”, he said. The coach singled out Mikel Obi and Kenneth Omeruo for special mention. “Your number 10 (Mikel), is very good, creative and has good vision, then Omeruo, very good aerially and gives good cover to the keeper. Your team wasted a lot of chances, they must learn to take them at the Nations Cup and I wish them good luck,” he concluded. Nigeria will begin their Afcon 2013 campaign with a match against burkinafaso on January 21 in Nelspruit. www.goal.com/en-ng/news/4687/2013-africa-cup-of-nations/2013/01/12/3667304/emenike-scores-as-nigeria-defeat-sparta-rotterdam-in-warm-up?source=breakingnews&ICID=HP_BN_3 |
Politics BY SIMON EBEGBULEM, Benin City Apostle Johnson Suleman is the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministry, one of the leading new generation churches in the country today. The church located along the Auchi-Abuja road in Auchi, Edo state is another Mecca in Nigeria as people from all over the world throng the giant edifice to see him. As a result, it was not easy for Saturday Vanguard to track down the man of God for this interview due to his very busy schedule. However, with sincere apologies, Apostle Suleman finally spoke to Saturday Vanguard at the Benin Airport, and as expected, he gave his 2013 predictions, saying that it will be disastrous for the nation if President Goodluck Jonathan decides to run for the 2015 Presidential election. Pastor Suleman who had in the past predicted the death of President Yar’Adua, disclosed that only eight governors will finish their tenure unless urgent prayers are made to save the situation. He spoke on his life and his views on the seeming trend by top Pastors in the country purchasing private jets. Excerpts: How I received Christ 1992, December 24, I slept and I woke up December 26. I did not see the Christmas Day, I slept all through the Christmas Day. And when I woke up, I was actually wishing people happy Christmas but they were looking at me, telling me it was actually a Boxing Day. I was taken aback because I felt I saw the Christmas Eve and how come I did not see the Christmas Day. I started remembering dreams I had of heaven and hell and of God calling me to become a preacher. Prior to that time, two years before that encounter, I was already a Christian in 1990 but I was scared to be a Pastor because of the so much stigma associated with Pastoring at that time. So for the call , I did not see December 25 1992 and that was the encounter that I had of God giving me a warning that I had no other choice than to do his work. That was the major encounter I had that made me become what I am today. Life as a cultist in school It was a normal one though I was doing some secret evil that my parents did not know. My father was surprised when he heard that I started smoking when I was in primary school. My parents were strict. My mum is a retired police officer while my Dad is a retired politician. They were very strict. But I found out that sometimes when you are too strict on children, they device means to break laws. That was what happened in my case. It was just the normal juvenile delinquency of the Nigeria youth. I was not living a good life before I became born again. I was a cultist in the higher institution. I was actually leading a sect in school then. The only thing I never did was to kill or rob. I am saying this publicly so that people who are cultists will know that there is nothing there. I did every other thing that a young man will do but I never partied. I was always a shy person, and that is why I am even surprise that I am a Pastor today because I am always shy in the crowd. I have never gone to any party in my life. I love doing my things quietly and forget it. I started my higher education at the Auchi Polytechnic and did my PHD in UNIBEN. I actually studied Mass Communication in Auchi. When I was in school, I was academically sound despite my bad boy attitude. I had a lot of women around me because they know I was very intelligent in school. I was SUG President, then class Rep.I have always excelled in my academics because that was one thing my parents were able to imbibe in me. Finding a wife My wife was my enemy. She was some body I never liked, she was too quiet but I felt she was a pretender. To make matters worst, she was my neighbour in our street. She was so quiet and reserved and I did not like that. I felt she couldn’t be that pretty and say she didn’t have relationships with men. I never liked her honestly. But some how, one thing led to another and today we are married with four kids. Secret behind the success of my Ministry I measure success with how many lives I have affected. I will say I am successful when I have affected the last person on earth. Presently, we have been able to move on and carry on just by the grace of God. God gave me the right team. I have loyal pastors who are educated. All my senior Pastors are graduates and it has helped us to bring their secular knowledge to play. It has been wonderful and we thank God. Why all my predictions have come true Well, I know I always wait upon the Lord, like every year I go on 40 days fast three times. I spend at least five hours every day studying and praying. But all of that is not what really brings the anointing. The gift of God is embedded in you by the anointing. When the anointing of God comes upon you, the gift of God is embedded in you and it is this gift of God that propels you to see things and say them. Like I said, all my predictions have come to pass. I predicted the death of President Yar’Adua. When I predicted that, some top Pastors in the Ministry said I was lying. I learnt some of them went there to pray for him and when God gave me the date of his death, my life was threatened, people came after me. But finally it came to pass. You see, when revelations of God come, what people should do is to find out how to redeem themselves when it is negative and when it is positive, you thank God for that. We live in a generation people just get political when prophecies come. Some people get upset and start chasing the man of God. This is God speaking through a man and we should understand that there is nothing personal about that. But people have this perception that some of you top Pastors belong to one cult or the other where you get your powers. What is your take on that? That is the African belief but if you go to America and God uses you, they appreciate God. Africans are used to their traditional institutions, they are used to occultism, they are used to the Dark Age. It is their way of life, so if they see any thing that is spectacular, they ascribe it to the devil. Now don’t totally write it off because some Pastors have gone occultic. Some Pastors have gone satanic, some have gone materialistic. There are Pastors today who are busy amassing wealth. I don’t know what a Pastor is doing with an Aircraft. I don’t know what a Pastor is doing with fifty cars. I read the success of any Minister by how successful those around him are; his ability to disburse what comes his way. God is going to bless you, once God is using you, he must bless you. But you must be able disburse that wealth. Genuine success through prosperity is to give back to the society. When you give back to the society, that is when you are truly successful. Talking about being materialistic, we have observed Pastors buying private jets and building schools; they are really wealthy in the society but their members are dying in poverty? The truth is that some of these Pastors in fairness have really done a lot for the less privileged. We can never do enough but you can do a lot because there is still one less privileged person out there that needs to be reached. It is not possible for the soap factory to make sure that every body gets neat every day, but what they can do is to affect the ones they can affect and enlighten the ones they can enlighten. Most Pastors also have really taken it up as a challenge to touch the lives of the less privileged. But some of them have not. When a Pastor has spent many years in the Ministry and now owns an air craft, I have no problem with all of that. What I have a problem with is this pursuit to prove to the world that you have arrived. You are going to pay the pilot, the crew members, maintain the aircraft, it cost a lot of money. That is my worry with people in that category. Advice for President Jonathan One major thing that I will say now is that people should be careful not to be crazy about power. One good thing that I will advise President Jonathan is that he should not contest for the 2015 presidential election. And if prayers are not made, if we don’t pray, I see only eight governors completing their tenure. We should pray because with prayers, a lot of things can be averted but if we don’t pray, we will see eight governors only completing their tenure. What God wants to focus on this year is to reward politicians with their sins. The Agricultural sector is going to receive a great boost this year. We have natural disasters coming up. I have a revelation last November that there will be attempt on the life of President Obama. I saw an African President being laid to rest and I saw Nigerian flag flying half mast. We need to pray for President Jonathan, if he goes ahead to contest there will be trouble. Abacha’s wife left the villa without Abacha, Yar’Adua’s wife left the villa without the husband, if Jonathan goes to contest, some thing very grave may happen. Those who are pushing him now, they want to destroy him. I am not saying this out of any personal animosity. I am saying this now because it can be averted. He should seek counsel. I love him but destiny has to be taken very sacrosanct. So I believe that if he asks for counsel, people can help him not to run for the Presidency in 2015.www.vanguardngr.com/2013/01/2015-there-ll-be-grave-consequences-for-nigeria-if-jonathan-runs/ |

California's San Joaquin Valley is one of the most productive agricultural regions in the country. It is also where, among the fresh fruits and vegetables, an estimated half-a-million plants of marijuana are growing openly, some allegedly being sold for non-medicinal purposes. "In the last two years, we've seen large-scale commercial farming operations of marijuana and explosions of backyard marijuana grows," said Lieutenant Rick Ko of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. Ko says the spike in cannabis cultivation is a result of California's booming medical marijuana trade. California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana almost 16 years ago to help people manage the nausea and pain associated with serious illnesses such as cancer and HIV. Law enforcement authorities say traffickers are hiding behind California's medical marijuana laws and distributing the drug illegally. Although medical marijuana is prohibited under federal law, 16 states and the District of Columbia have legalized use and enforcement of federal law is often limited to the worst offenders. In California, Lt. Ko's team is attempting to limit the abuse of state and local medical marijuana regulations. "We're looking for the people that are diverting medical marijuana from legitimate uses to either organized crime or profiteering activities," Ko said. Some patients in California are getting doctors' recommendations to grow up to 99 plants of medical marijuana. rockcenter.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/05/17/11736464-marijuana-grows-openly-in-california-towns-as-traffickers-hide-behind-laws-police-say |
