The suspected mastermind of the Paris attacks was
among those killed in a police raid in a northern suburb
of the French capital on Wednesday, authorities said
Thursday, as the lower house of the French Parliament
voted to extend state-of-emergency powers until
February and Belgian officials continued their search for
another suspect, who remains on the run.
Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a 28-year-old Belgian who had
boasted of mounting attacks in Europe for the Islamic
State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), was accused of
orchestrating Friday's bombings and shootings. His
body was found in the apartment building targeted in
a chaotic raid in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis early
Wednesday morning.
Police launched the raid after receiving information
from tapped phone calls, surveillance and witness
accounts suggesting that Abaaoud was holed up there.
Killed along with Abaaoud was his cousin, who blew
herself up with an explosives vest at the beginning of
the raid, police said. Eight people were arrested in two
separate raids in the area on Wednesday.
"Abdel Hamid Abaaoud has just been formally identified,
after comparing fingerprints, as having been killed
during the (police) raid," a statement from the Paris
prosecutor said. "It was the body we had discovered in
the building, riddled with bullets." But the prosecutor's
office left open the possibility that Abaaoud may also
have detonated an explosive device on his person.
French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve says France
did not know before last week's deadly attacks that
Abaaoud was in Europe. Cazeneuve said Abaaoud was
believed to be behind four of six attacks thwarted in
France since spring 2015, including an attempted attack
on a high-speed train headed to Paris in August that
was foiled by other train passengers.
News of Abaaoud's death came as Belgian authorities
detained seven people during several raids Thursday
morning in Molenbeek, a Brussels district. The raids
were linked to one of the suicide bombers in last
week's attacks, Bilal Hadfi, and "his entourage," a
Belgian official said.
Another suspect who had lived in Molenbeek, Salah
Abdeslam, 26, remains on the run. He is suspected of
having rented a black VW Polo car used in the attacks in
Paris.
"In this community of Muslims in Molenbeek there is a
lot of unemployment and, in this situation, it’s a basis
where hate preachers can find and indoctrinate people,"
Jan Jambon, the Belgian interior minister, told Al
Jazeera. "This analysis is already made for years but
the political will was never there to change things."
Fatima Bourial, a shop assistant who grew up in
Molenbeek and still lives there, said Abaaoud's actions
have "nothing to do with Islam."
"Everybody hates what he has done," Bourial said. "This
is not human what he did. I can't understand how
somebody can kill innocent people in the hope of going
to paradise."
On Friday Jambon will meet in Brussels with European
interior and justice ministers. It's expected that French
officials will call for strengthened counter-terrorism
measures and tightened border checks. Officials also
will mull measures to enforce stricter controls of
firearm sales and enhanced intelligence-sharing.
With France still reeling from the Friday attacks, Prime
Minister Manuel Valls warned that ISIL might attempt
to use chemical or biological weapons.
"Terrorism hit France not because of what it is doing in
Iraq and Syria ... but for what it is," Valls told the lower
house of Parliament Thursday. "We know that there
could also be a risk of chemical or biological weapons."
Valls' announcement came as the National Assembly, in
a 551 to 6 vote, agreed to extend state-of-emergency
powers until February. The vote allows the interior
ministry to order house arrests and house searches
without judicial approval. Since Friday’s attacks, the
ministry has ordered house arrest for over 100 people,
and it has conducted nearly 200 house searches.
State-of-emergency powers also allow police to prohibit
the free movement of people and vehicles at any time,
to block access to certain websites, and to set up
checkpoints outside public and private buildings
suspected of harboring people deemed dangerous to
national security.
These powers were first enacted in 1955 at the start of
France’s war with Algeria. Since then, France has
decreed a state of emergency twice: in 1985 in the
Pacific island territory of New Caledonia amid massive
unrest between separatists and French loyalists, and in
2005 in response to three weeks of rioting in Paris and
hundreds of other French towns. |
Senators who are members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party
created an hilarious scene on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday,
when they stopped the member representing Lagos Central Senatorial
District, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, from addressing the chamber from the
seat of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
The drama ensued when the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, asked the
wife of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress to second a
motion moved by Senator Kabiru Gaya, who was seeking the approval of
the red chamber for him to submit the report of his committee on the
$200m foreign loan being sought by Lagos State.
Mrs. Tinubu was seated on Ekweremadu’s seat who was conspicuously
absent from plenary when she was asked to second the motion.
However, no sooner than she put on the microphone on the seat of the
deputy senate president than the PDP senators, protested against her
action, and insisted that she should relocate to her seat to speak.
Attempt by Mrs. Tinubu to explain that she was on Ekweremadu’s seat
because the microphone on her own seat was not working was rebuffed
by the PDP senators.
She left angrily for her own seat and attempted to use her dysfunctional
microphone to convince the PDP senators that she was speaking the truth.
Mrs. Tinubu then went to a seat close to hers, and sought the permission
of her neighbour to make use of his microphone.
It was after she got the permission of the senator sitting beside her that
she was able to address her colleagues.
She nevertheless returned to Ekweremadu’s seat and sat down there for
over one hour the plenary lasted. |
Palpable tension has enveloped the border town of Okuta in Baruten
Local Government Area of Kwara Stateover the alleged invasion of 16
villages by the authorities of Benin Republic.
Already, the authorities of the neighbouring country have gone ahead to
construct Gerdarmes Office (Police station) in the affected Nigerian
communities and also hoist their national flag at the affected Nigeria
villages.
The development, according to THISDAY investigations, has disregarded
the boundary delimitation of 1914 between Britain and France which the
two countries had respected.
The affected Nigerian villages, according to THISDAY checks, include
Ogomne, Bwin, Gandasunon, Kpuru and Woru Wuren Kparu.
Others are Ajuba,1, Ajuba 2, Saka Yeruman Kparu,Monta, Dotin
Kparu,Halidun Kparu, Yakubun Kparu, Sonsi,Gunosani, Alhaji Kparu,Yodo
Mankparu and Simen Kparu.
It was learnt that the development has also led the Okuta Emirate Council
to order the people of Yakparu axis to dismantle of the Beninoire flag
hoisted at Nigerian villages and the flag is currently at the custody of the
emirate council in the town. |
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari yesterday gave insight into reasons why
it took him time to constitute the Federal Executive Council. The
President linked it to former President Goodluck Jonathan and the
Peoples Democratic Party's unpreparedness for the outcome of the 2015
presidential election, as they didn't put in place structures that will make
the transition seamless.
Speaking at a Conference on Government Transition Framework for
Nigeria, organized by the National Democratic Institute, in Abuja, with
theme, 'Strengthening Nigeria's transition framework for democratic
consolidation,' President Buhari maintained that had a system been in
place, real-time information would have been available to assist the
incoming government to quickly settle down, form its cabinet and go
about the business of governance.
He insisted that the inadequacy of the handover notes from the
immediate past administration contributed in no small measure to the
delay in constituting his cabinet, stressing that he needed to have a clear
idea of what his administration was inheriting.
According to the President, "the country lacked an institutionalized
transition system, the then ruling government simply did not know what
to do and unpatriotic elements exploited the situation, which almost led
to a national crisis.
"For the government led by a ruling party that had vowed to stay in
power for 60 years in the first instance, they were not prepared for any
transition that will not be from themselves to themselves. How can they,
when they felt invincible, judging by their perceived strength and
assumed popularity and the huge resources at their disposal? Our
experience in the last transition process was unique, despite the fact that
we have held many general elections and transitioned from one
government to another.
"Indeed, the last election heralded the first real transition in the history
of our nation, being the first time that an opposition party will sweep the
ruling party out of power. This probably explains why the then ruling
government was completely caught unawares by the outcome of the
election," he added. |
Achoice in life is sometimes made consequent upon life's encounter. It takes one moment of decision to carve a niche and clear a path for one's future endeavours. For the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, his passion for teaching is as a result of an encounter he had with an erudite scholar, Dr. Akin Oyebode, now a professor. Speaking at the home coming reception and recognition award held in his honour, along side Governors Akin Ambode of Lagos, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe, Chief Willie Obiano of Anambra, Mr. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom and Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, the Deputy Governor of Abia State, the Vice President said the University of Lagos has defined his life in so many ways and that influenced his decision to become a varsity teacher. Osinbajo said "the importance of good teaching can never be overemphasized as that was what made me become a teacher. I remember one evening of 1977 when I walked into a jurisprudence class and that was my first time of meeting Dr. Akin Oyebode, now a professor. He was teaching on the sociological school and did so without any prepared notes, though he later told me he had cue cards which I don't remember seeing. "Dr. Oyebode taught the for over one and a half hours on the sociological school of jurisprudence, and by the time he was through, I made up my mind that I would teach law and that is the inspiration that led me to teaching four years later."The VP added "the University of Lagos has defined my life in so many ways and that is why I decided to become a teacher. Even today, the first thing that is known about me is that I am a university teacher. "This is the great inspiration that should be drawn from varsities which must continue to be places of ideas as the future of communities and the nation depends on the thinking of those in universities.“For this to be achieved, we have to make these varsities comfortable enough for the great minds to continue to grow and come up with great ideas that would benefit the economy." Welcoming the gathering, the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Rahamon Bello, said the awards would serve to motivate students to show them that hard work, diligence and dedication to work pays. Bello said "Unilag is 53 years and has produced great individuals who have proven their worth wherever they find themselves. The varsity continues to excel in its academic pursuit and all round development of its students. On the 1st of November 1962, the first lecture was held here with a student population of 131. Now the student enrollment stands at 52,779. "In the face of gradual reduction in government funding of education, occasioned by the decline in oil price, we need to look inwards as the varsity has nobody to turn to but its alumni and friends of the varsity."Speaking on behalf of the Governing Council, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Jerry Gana, said the gathering is to celebrate the alumni who have achieved a lot in their fields of endeavours. Veritablevehicle He said "On behalf of the Council, we welcome and salute the awardees. We are proud to say that they all drank from Nigeria's foremost citadel of learning – UNILAG."Anambra State governor, Mr. Willie Obiano, advised the students to take advantage of the great brains that are in this varsity. The Deputy Governor, Abia State, Ude Oko Chukwu, pointed out that Ivory Towers have critical and strategic roles to play in the growth and development of any nation and Unilag has remained a veritable vehicle to drive and grow the development initiatives of the Nigerian nation for the optimum benefits of the people. Present at the awards were the Vice Chancellor; the Deputy Vice Chancellors; management staff, members of the Governing Council, including the General Manager/Editor in Chief, Vanguard Media, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye; President of the Alumni, Dr. Sonny Kuku; among other dignitaries.

BRITAIN has said it does not support the agitation for the creation of a Biafran nation from Nigeria. In a statement issued yesterday and made avaliable to Daily Sun, the British High Commission, Abuja, explained that the position of the UK government during the civil war was a matter of historical record. "The UK Government's position, which reflected the Charter of the Organization of African Unity, was to recognise the borders laid down at Independence," the High Commission's Press & Public Affairs Officer, Joe Abuku said. "The Biafran War caused great suffering and the UK supported the reconciliation work that followed the conflict. The UK supports the territorial integrity of Nigeria and President Buhari's commitment to work for a secure and prosperous Nigeria for all Nigerians," he added. Campaigners for Biafra have been staging protests over the arrest and detention of Radio Biafra host, Nnamdi Kanu by the authorities in Abuja. Kanu is a dual citizen of both the UK and Nigeria. Commenting on his detention, Abuku said the UK High Commission has a standing position stating thus: "The British government only provides consular assistance to dual nationals in the country of their other nationality in exceptional circumstances. "If the High Commission is approached for consular assistance by a British National in Nigeria who also holds a Nigerian passport, the level of support that could be offered in their case would be discussed with the individual concerned." Meanwhile, agency reports said the expressed position of the British High commission tallies with a widely-circulated letter written by UK Minister of State, Grant Shapps, affirming a similar position concerning Biafra agitation. That letter was written in response to MP Micheal Meacher, following an inquiry by one of Mr. Meacher's constituents who had written to inquire about the detention of Radio Biafra host, Nnamdi Kanu. Mr. Shapps wrote the letter to an MP, Micheal Meacher, in response to an inquiry by one of Mr. Meacher's constituents who had written to inquire about the detention of Kanu. "We are not aware of any institutionalized persecution of any people by the Nigerian authorities," he declared. "The position of the British Government during the Biafran War is a matter of historical record," he recalled. "Our position, which reflected the Charter of the Organization of African Unity, was to recognise the borders laid down at Independence. There is no question that the Biafran War caused great suffering and the UK supported the reconciliation work that followed the conflict and continues to support efforts to reduce violence in Nigeria today." According to Mr. Shapps, "The UK fully supports the territorial integrity of Nigeria and President Buhari's commitment to work for a secure and prosperous Nigeria for all Nigerians. We share the concern of President Buhari and all Nigerians about threats to Nigeria's stability and are working with Nigeria to help tackle these threats, including Boko Haram. Reports quoted Abuku as saying he could not confirm the authenticity of the Hon. Grant Shapps letter as it is not their practice to confirm or deny the authenticity of leaked documents. AT least 16 people died in the Pakistani city of Lahore after a factory under construction collapsed. Reports said emergency services were worried that as many as 150 workers could be trapped under the rubble. Cries for help from under the debris at the factory were heard at the site, officials told The Express Tribune. Two floors were operational while a third was being built, according to reports. The factory used to make shopping bags is located in the Sundar Industrial Estate on the outskirts of the city. The Dawn newspaper reported that some under-age workers were employed there although this was not officially confirmed. |
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has developed a new Benchmark
Minimum Academic Standards for training of doctors in Nigerian universities.
According to the commission, medical programmes will now take a duration of
7 years.
This was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Julius Okojie,
during a three-day capacity development programme for staff of medical
schools in Nigerian universities.
He said the new benchmark minimum academic standard was competency-
based and would substantially address most of the challenges faced by the
institutions in the training of doctors in the country.
In his words, "The curriculum review was necessitated by the fact that the
frontier of knowledge in all academic disciplines had been advancing with new
information generated as a result of research.
Other compelling reasons included the need to update the standard and
relevance of university education in the country as well as to integrate
entrepreneurial studies as essential new platforms that would guarantee all
graduates from Nigerian universities the knowledge of appropriate skills,
competences and dispositions that would make them globally competitive and
capable of contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s socio-economic development." |

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board
JAMB has said that it has made some
modifications on the 2016/2017 registration as it
concerns selection of institutions by candidates.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the
board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, the board has made
provision for “preferred choice” to give candidates
ample opportunity of gaining admission.
In his words, “What we did initially was that you
only have one choice. Now, we have made it in
such a way that if you miss the University of
Lagos; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Obafemi
Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaira, you will have an opportunity of
going to another school.
Before, all universities will be in first and second
choice and that will not solve any problem. We
have now decided to put a few of those schools
we feel will have more spaces as more preferred.
Institutions placed on the more preferred choice
are those that are mostly not oversubscribed.
This is because it will not make any sense if you
place institutions like the ABU, UNILAG, OAU and
UNN, when in actual sense they cannot even
admit one third of the candidates that will choose
them as most preferred.”
We therefore advise candidates to ensure they
visit accredited registration centres for
registration where they will be properly guided on
this new option and ask questions if the need
clarification.
If you want to quickly see what courses are
offered in various Universities or what universities
offer a particular course or even if you want to
check Subject Combinations for various courses,
visit Our online JAMB brochure |
I humbly welcome all jamb 2016/2017 candidate into this thread.I will make it a point of duties to post every relate information here to ensure that you do not make the same mistake that most of us have made in the time past. Just as d saying goes "if you are not INFORM,you will be DEFORM". To avoid this, beseech you to ask questions concerning anything that is not clear to you raging from the subject combination of your course down to the information about the University you have in Mind.WISH YOU ALL THE BEST OF SUCCESS |

President Muhammadu Buhari has admitted that Nigeria is indeed broke. He said that the country is at the moment struggling to pay workers salaries even as he says he wants to be remembered as a Nigerian president who fought corruption to a standstill, assuring Nigerians, who are not involved in corruptly enriching themselves with public funds, not to be afraid. President Buhari said in the coming days he would have to prune the number of ministries so as to be able to pay salaries. He's saying this barely 24 hours after the Senate confirmed 37 ministerial nominees he sent to the upper chamber of the National Assembly for confirmation. Speaking at a press conference after the India-Africa Summit, which took place in New Delhi, India, President Buhari said he would not lose sleep over criticism that he was being selective in the fight against corruption. One of the main talking points at the one-day summit in New Delhi, was the provision India had made for African countries. The nation said it had set aside over $10 billion grant for African countries. Wooing investors, President Buhari assured Indians and the international community of his administration's commitment to sustaining efforts aimed at making Nigeria an envy of all. He urged them to avail themselves of the conducive environment that would be created for investments to thrive. Responding to critics of his administration who claim he was too slow in addressing economic and infrastructural challenges facing the country that's yearning for urgent development, Buhari said "they call me baba go slow, but I will go slow and steady". He called on the elite to encourage him to get whoever had compromised his position and the trust given to him. President Buhari told the gathering that he remained resolute in the fight against corruption and would want to be remembered for that when it is all said and done. His administration has three main focus - security, economy and the fight against corruption. But he has roundly been criticised by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as being selective in the fight. On whether there will be an extension of a three-month deadline given by his administration to flush out Boko Haram from Nigeria's north-east, the President said that the target was to get rid of terrorism and not about meeting deadline. See excerpts of interview: How much have you recovered so far in your fight against corruption and how do you feel when people say you are being selective? I can't tell you off hand how much we have recovered. For those who accuse us of being selective, if they are not involved in corruption, they wouldn't have been saying that, they would be the ones to encourage us to get whoever that has compromised in his position of trust. Those who are not corrupt should even encourage us to do more. I'm not selective. But whoever that is corrupt would be given up for prosecution so that Nigerians will know we are serious about this fight. The three months target you gave the military to flush out Boko Haram, if they don't meet the target would there be an extension? The main objective is to get rid of Boko Haram whether it is within the time you gave to the military or outside it. We maintain cardinal objective and we would support them. The PDP and APC in the NASS have been polarised following the confirmation of your ministerial nominees. Does that bother you? This is teamwork. I didn't work with the Presidency alone, I have to defend all the three chains of government from all parts of the country and we cannot work outside the constitution, it must be a cabinet representative of each state. We cannot afford votes for all ministers, some may not be successful ministers, but they would sit in cabinet, because that is what the constitution says, and we cannot operate outside the constitution. Are you reducing the number of ministries? Of course, the country is broke There are talks that your government is too slow in addressing infrastructure? Where is the money? You must have known that the Federal Government has to help 27 states out of 36 to pay salaries. Nigeria cannot pay salaries; the Federal Government itself has to summon the Governor of Central Bank on how it could pay salaries, not to talk of projects, agreements we signed with other countries on counterpart funding and so on.

Bauchi-The Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum and governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has said the mismanagement of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government was responsible for the sufferings experienced in the nation, assuringthat the All Progressives Congress, APC government would address all the challenges facing Nigeria. He said the APC was a masses oriented party created to touch the lives of the ordinary man in the country. According to him, APC government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari has all it takes to fix the problems of the country. Okorocha, who stated this yesterday while giving a brief remark at the opening ceremony of the APC governors progressive meeting at the Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi, said the aim of the APC governor's meeting was to address critical issues affecting the ordinary man, pointing out that the nation was going through a very difficult moment. The President must be bothered that the National Assembly had been polarised following his choice of ministers. While he was away, the PDP and the All Progressives Congress' lawmakers were sharply divided over one of his ministerial nominees, Mr Chibuike Amaechi. • It was a dream come true - The 7 aspiring engineers EKWULOBIA-VICE Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka , Prof. Joseph Ahaneku is a happy man now following the feat achieved by his students. This was because the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the university had again proved that it was not just good in theory but also in the practical aspect of their studies. Seven graduating students from the department constructed a "made in Nigeria" mini bus to the satisfaction of the university community. The journey into car manufacturing in the university started last year, when a group of five students from the same department produced a Formula 1 car called AutoZIK. The seven students include Ezeigwe Chitoo, Obinani Victor, Ezeanolue Ifeanyi, Okoro Chinaza, Ominigbo Fidelis, Nwobodo Nnamdi and Ogbu Thaddeus. They were supervised by the Head of the department, Dr. C.H. Achebe. South East Voice learned that the group, which is known as ‘AUTOZIK II,’ spent over five months constructing the mini bus for shuttles within and around the university with locally sourced materials. Like the popular saying, "What a man can do, a woman can do even better," the conspicuous presence of a female, 'Okoro Chinaza' in the team spoke volumes. On how she was able to surmount the challenges as the only female in the midst of her male counterparts with respect to the stress associated with such herculean tasks, she said: "I had always been in their midst right from my first year in school, so it was not really a big deal." She disclosed that she had always followed her passion regardless of what people around said or thought. Narrating the success story, one of the engineers, Ezeigwe Chitoo, said that the project was a dream come true. "The Autozik group made the design using CAD software, and all necessary simulation softwares for the analysis, putting the environment into critical consideration. The bus has good seating positions, better fuel conservation, good passenger view and very good aesthetics. It was built to suit the topography of our environment and the weather condition we have in this part of the world," he said. According to him, the bus was constructed from start to finish, inside the mechanical workshop of the university. He disclosed that the project was aimed at advancing the ergonomic standard of existing shuttle buses. The bus can be compared to other foreign produced ones and it is outstanding. Also speaking, a member of the team, Ifeanyi said: "The AUTOZIK team had gone through a whole lot before arriving at this platform. When we started, many thought we will not come this far, but today they have come to rejoice with us. "We thank God, who has brought us this far, we also thank our supervisor and the Head of Department Dr. C.H. Achebe, for his fatherly advice and support throughout the duration of the project," he happily said. The bus was test-driven within and outside the university to prove that it was movable, durable and above all, fully made in Nigeria. Some of the students of the department, in an interview, commended the efforts of Dr. Achebe and his team of lecturers, who, according to them, were doing great job, by igniting the spirit and the zeal of invention and innovation in Nigeria. They also commended the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Ihueze Toochukwu, who, they said, had brought huge improvement to the Faculty of Engineering and re-branding the system. The team further praised the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ahaneku, who according to them, had changed the face of the institution, wiped out examination malpractice and improved the standard of learning.According to Chitoo, Ahaneku's support for the Faculty of Engineering had increased the zeal for invention and ingenuity in the faculty.

Politicians and diapers have one thing in common: they should both be changed regularly… and for the same reason. |
The Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an overgrown child of circumstance. Soyinka sharply criticised Obasanjo in his (Nobel laureate’s) new book, titled InterInventions: Between Defective Memory and the Public Lie – A Personal Odyssey in the Republic of Liars, presented in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Saturday. Although Soyinka conceded that he used to be friendly with Obasanjo and admitted in the book that some stakeholders were making efforts to reconcile them, he said he owed it a responsibility to fundamentally respond to lies that Obasanjo allegedly told against him in his latest biography, titled, My Watch, described in InterInventions as Three-Carat Watch. Soyinka, who in the book also critically takes on the likes of former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; and veteran critic, Prof. Chinweizu, wrote, quoting a Yoruba proverb, “The child that swears his mother will not sleep must also prepare for a prolonged, sleepless infancy. So, let it be with Okikiola, the overgrown child of circumstance. ”I brainstormed with him over meals both when he was military Head of State – in Dodan Barracks and in his home, Ota – for some time after he left office and early in Aso Rock at his ‘second coming.’ Today, it is a different situation. If he offered to host me, I would wait until he had first swallowed a morsel from the same dish. “I had fully attuned myself to the fact that our Owu retiree soldier and prolific author is an infliction that those of us who share the same era and nation space must learn to endure. However, it does appear to me that there is no end to this individual’s capacity for infantile mischief, and for needless, mind-boggling provocations, such as his recent ‘literary’ intrusion on my peace. He added that part of the intervention the elders made was a ‘cordial’ conversation he had with Obasanjo recently. According to the Nobel laureate, he, during the conversation, commended Obasanjo for the creative way he had developed the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, which Soyinka, however, described as a Presidential Laundromat and a product of executive extortion. He added that he discussed the possibility of a collaboration with the facility. But Soyinka, who chronicled the various places his path had met with that of Obasanjo since childhood, insisted that the lies in which the former President allegedly thrived were so unthinkable that he and some other people had started working on another book solely focusing on Obasanjo. He questioned the godliness to which Obasanjo professed and claimed that the former President indulged in identity theft. “Our author invokes God tirelessly, without provocation, without necessity and without justification, perhaps preemptively, but does he really believe in such an entity? Does our home-bred Double-O-Seven believe in anything outside his own Omnipotence? Could he possibly have mistaken the Christian exhortation – ‘Watch and Pray’ – for his own private inclination to ‘Watch and Prey? This is a seasoned predator on others’ achievements. He preys on their names, their characters, their motivations, their true lives; preys on gossip and preys on contributions to collective undertakings – even preys on their identities, substituting his own where possible.” In the book, Soyinka also commented on the controversy over the ownership and leadership of the board of the Centre for Culture and International Understanding, over which he and Oyinlola recently exchanged words. He and a former Corpa Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Dr. Olu Agunloye, also challenged Major Rasaki Salawu (retd.), who recently claimed that it was he – and not Soyinka – that formed the commission. At the public presentation of the book, Soyinka said that he was poised to draw blood with it. The inauguration of the Soyinka Foundation, held at the MKO Abiola Cultural Centre, Kuto, attracted dignitaries that included the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun; his Edo State counterpart, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, who came in company with his wife, Lara; former governors of Ekiti, Rivers and Cross River states, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi and Mr. Donald Duke While the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, also graced the occasion, at the the programme that featured readings and performances were scholars/writers such Profs JP Clark, Biodun Jeyifo and Remi Raji; Odia Ofeimun and Kunle Ajibade. Amosun commended Soyinka and the organisers of the event for the initiative and promised to support it. Efforts to get Obasanjo’s reaction failed as one of his aides said the former President had travelled to Ivory Coast to monitor elections. |
